Today I ordered the remaining paints.
I need to paint the Smit Nederland!

They are all Acrylic paints!

I also sent back the paints.
I had ordered from billing Boats!

I also took the time to send back.
The Channel and Switch Controller.
I had ordered from Cornwall Model Boats.

The folks at Cornwall Model Boats.
Are going to give me a full refund!
As these components didn't function!

But, I kept the F-14 Controller though!
The F-14 functions quite well!

Doug, as you can see from the current photo.
I didn't paint the hull grey!
I just painted the deck and bulwark grey!
But, in my new order of paint supplies.
I have ordered two (2) cans of Grey Primer!
These primers will be used on the hull itself!

Thanks, for pointing out I should use Primer!
This I know! Was in a rush! Maybe, I need to slowdown?

I also ordered a small tin of primer!
This I'll use with a brush if needed!

Grey paint was all I had at the time!
So, it was used!
But, of course primer will be used on the hull!

Oh, my photos come out grainy!
Because it was a cloudy day!
Here in New England all we have are cloudy days!
Were in the middle of winter!

Maybe, I need a better camera?

Today, I decided to work on her fenders!
If anyone has the instructions to the Smit Nederland.
You would see they leave out of the instruction.
How or when to make the fenders!

But, they were fairly easy to make!
I used wood provided in the kit!

I used my Dremel to grind away.
The the edges off of the rectangular spruce!
I grounded the edges on a slight angle!

This is done so when you glue the pieces side by side.
They will show up as individual pieces!

Basically looking like rubber fenders!

anyway, I then measured the surface of the bow area.
Having taken measurements.
I then cut small pieces of spruce.

I had made a center line on the bow.
And also on her stern!

I used these center lines to guild me!
I started on the bow center line.
I glued the first piece.
Being as careful as possible.
To be as accurate to the center line!

After gluing the first piece.
I then attenuated gluing pieces.
Port and Starboard!

I then did the same for the Stern!

Oh, I then cut some spruce on the diagonal.
This was done to make the ends of the fenders!

I will then seal the fenders tomorrow!

I'm going to use Black Nylon string.
As her tow cable!
I had ordered 1.5 mm string.
But, it seems a bit thin!
So, Will order some 2 mm string!

I'd like to get the winch to actually work!
I have figured out a way to get the winch.
To work by using a small geared motor!

Does any body know.
where I could order a motorized winch?
That could be used on a 1:33 scale model tug!

I found one but it very expensive.
It's $132.00! And it's a bit big!
But, I might get away with it!

But, I just can't see the expense!
So, I think I'll motorize the winch the model comes with.

I had ordered two miniature motors from china.
But, with what's going on with the corona virus.
I hope there's no delay in shipments from china!

I used one can of primer on the hull.
I let it dry overnight!

I then decided to work on the top of the water line!
Unfortunately my water line.
Didn't come out right!

I used the Kort Nozzles to steady the hull.
While lifting the hull from the bow!

I then found where the water line would go.
But, the hull teetered left and right!

So, the waterline was OK on her port side.
But, her starboard side was off by 2 mm's!

So, once it's dry here.
I'll take the hull outside and re prime it!

Oh, the top of the waterline or the top of the hull.
Is painted black.
I used Humbrol RC401!

But, after painting the top of the waterline.
I notice brush strokes!

So, That's why I'm going to re prime the hull!
I don't like the brush strokes showing!
I will then used Matt Black spray from Humbrol!

Billings recommends to use Crimson!
But, I'd rather use Red Oxide Primer!

As this is a true color to use for the bottom of the hull!
I have sprayed the rudders of the Smit Nederland!

And the Red Oxide looks very good!

Well, I plan on making the Tow Winch operational!
So, I ordered some Nylon string!
It's 1.5 mm But, I'm not sure about it!
I think I'll order some 2 mm Nylon String!

My first attempt at a waterline was very inaccurate!

And so I had to prime the hull again!

This time I placed cardboard cutouts.
In the Kort Nozzles!
This I did to make the Kort Nozzles more rigged!
As the Kort Nozzles would flex!
As weight was placed in the hull!
And the hull would bob and weave!

So, now having placed the cardboard cutouts.
I was able to make a better waterline!

One thing I've noticed.
About others who have built the kit.

Is the waterlines aren't placed where it should go!
I believe that where I have placed the water line.
Is where it should go!

But, I am at the present time waiting.
For more paint supplies to arrive!

Hopefully the weather will be nice.
When I receive the paints.
And I'll be able to paint the hull!

And eventually I'll continue with the Build!

Oh, I still have more supplies to order!😁😂🤣👍

I had ordered some motors.
For the Smit Nederland build.
It turns out they are miniature motors!

I intend on motorizing the winch.
On the Smit Nederland!

I also plan on using a miniature motor.
To motorize the radar!

Anyway, I ordered two of them!
One at 10 RPM's and the other at 50 RPM's!
The 10 RPM one being used on the Radar!

Oh, I forgot to mention the motors are 6 volt motors!

My idea to motorize the winch.
Is just to simulate cable letting out.
And inwards to the winch!

No real towing to be done!
Unless I see my idea works.
And the winch can be used to tow!

OK, you engineer types out there.
What are the chances of it working?

Years ago the Smit Nederland model.
Came with the windows outlined in black.
On a piece of plastic!

All you had to do was.
Outline the window frames in wood veneer!
You would then place the window cutouts.
On to the window frames!

But, the folks at Billings.
Have taken a shortcut to this step!
They now just send a piece of clear plastic!
This is now what's used!

I for on wish they wouldn't have taken this step away!

So, what I've done is glued the windows from the inside!
This does take away from the details of the model.
But, I really didn't want to do all that work.
For it to look sloppy!

Also the veneer pieces would have.
Less to hold on to!
When being glued to!

It actually looks as if the windows.
Would have let go of the veneer!

So, gluing the windows from the inside.
Gives the windows more of a gluing surface!

I know it's hard to see.
But, they're windows!
It's just really hard to see!

Today was a good day for painting.
The bottom of the Hull!
I had ordered some Red Oxide primer.
And some Matt Black paint!

Billings want you to use Crimson!
But, having worked over 20 years on real tugs.
I never seen the bottom of the Hull painted Crimson!
Always Red Oxide Primer!

After the paint has cured.
I will tape up the top of the hull!
Maybe paint in a day or two!
Or maybe even three days!

Making sure the red oxide primer has set!
