Capstans!

The Smit Nederland's Capstans.
Are painted but I like the way they look in brass!

The ones next to the main cabin.
Are to be painted black!
Along with the one aft!
Under the chaffing gear!

But, I think the all the Capstans.
Being brass would look better!

Question:
What do you think?
Should the capstans be painted?
Or Shouldn't they?

Ed, she’s your boat, both the owner and skipper. Like Mouldmaker said, unless you’re going for and exact duplicate of the prototype, then paint em any way you want them. Dougs idea about having the paint look liked it was rubbed off is good however. Thing is, if you’re like me you weather one thing, then you have to make the rest of the boat look weathered as well. I think she looks fine now, you could always make her look “just launched new”, run her a while, then go back and do some weathering.

    Hi Cash,

I agree! There's nothing like a new looking boat!
    To make a Skipper proud!

Maybe, I'll wait till after I've run her awhile!

Capstans Painted!

Staying at home is the best thing to do!
Especially with corona virus and all!

So, I have painted all the capstans.
and also sealed them using.
Humbrol Enamel Varnish!

I did notice when I sprayed the capstan.
With the Varnish that the brass.
Became a bit dull looking!

Which, I do like!
As they look used and a bit worn!

Also having sprayed them with Varnish.
Will protect them from oxidizing!

So, on my Smit Nederland everyone will take turns.
Polishing the Brightwork!

Except for the Skipper that is!

All deck fitting!

I have now glued all the deck fittings to the deck!

I'm thinking of putting screws.
Under the main center tow bit!
This would be to reinforce the center tow bit!

I'll also reinforce the aft tow bit as well!

Tires and more Tires!

The Smit Nederland is suppose to have just 8 tires!
But, I had some extra tires!
And so, I put 24 total number of tires!

This way I'll keep myself from dinging.
The sides of the Smit, or her Bow!

Funnels assembled!

Today was a good day.
To assemble the Funnels.
On the Smit Nederland!

I also put rubber hoses going to the top of the Funnels!
on the inside of the Funnels!
These hoses will be connected to 12 volt smokers.
I'm going to use to simulate Smoke throttling!

I know I forgot to take pictures!

The Funnels look great.
With the smoke coming out!

I'll have to make a Video!

OH, Doug!

My flash didn't go off!
So, the picture of the Smit.
Looks very dark, Oh well!

Note:

While assembling the Funnels.
I inadvertently forgot to keep.
The bottom of the Funnel.
Facing towards the aft end of the the Smit!

A minor detail but it's there!
Luckily the mahogany bench.
Between the Funnels will cover the mistake!

Main Mast!

Ok, today I decided to tackle her Main Mast!
Which was a bit tricky.
As I don't have fancy tools or a drill press!

I had gotten an Idea from Martin555.
Of using a flat surface.
To hold and wedge her Main Mast in place!
While holding the Main Mast drilling the six holes.
For her light supports!

But, what I did was solder the Main Mast!
Then I carefully drew a center line.
Going down the Mast!
Then took measurement off the Smit Nederland Plans!
I then marked where on the Mast.
The holes for the supports would go!

Then, I carefully used my dremel.
To flatten down a bit the roundness of the Mast.
So, I could then drill without having.
The drill bit slip off the Mast!

A bit of patients and it paid off!

Oh, I had purchased my Pencil Torch.
Some years ago! I think about 5 years now!
I then thought some day I'll need this!
Some day was Now!

Some times it's good to think ahead!!!

And I didn't burn myself.........

Tomorrow, I'll continue to complete her Main Mast!

Smit Nederland Main Mast!

The Smits main mast is easy to build!
If you have the proper tools.
Which I don't have so I have to improvise!

See, I wanted to put lights on the mast!
Which, I got plenty of help from Martin555!

The mast supports go glued into the mast.
And what I need to do is run miniature wire.
Straight thru the middle of the mast!

But, the support where in the way!
So, Martin and I were Skyping.

And Martin figured I had to drill out the center of the mast!

I didn't have a drill long enough.
So, Martin recommended using a metal hanger!

I then measured the mast, Then measured the hanger!
I broke the hanger. Then used the piece of metal to ream out the Smits Main Mast!

After reaming out the Mast!
I then saw I was able to put miniature wire thru the mast!

Thanks, Martin your a great help!

Lighting of the Mast!

I must admit Martin555 has been very instrumental.
In the building of the mast of the Smit Nederland!
He helped me via Skype!

See, the mast of the Smit is of Wood and Brass tubbing!
So, you have to run wire on the outside of the mast!
But, my positive wire will run on the inside of the mast!

I'm running my positive wire.
On the inside of the mast!

There are 6 lights on the mast.
So, there's going to be 6 wires.
Running out the bottom of the mast!

But, three wires will be connected together!

Let's say the forward lights on the mast.
Is circuit 1 the three aft lights is circuit 2!

Originally, I want to control all the light from my controller! But, it turns out the controller wasn't able to be used like that!

Anyway, To run the wires thru the mast.
I drilled 1 mm holes next to the supports!
But, It turns out the hole where too close.
So, I then drill 1 mm hole about 1 mm away from the supports! This worked out great as the wire I was trying to put thru the mast. Then went thru the mast!

Again, I must admit Martin555 was very helpful!

Oh, I had ordered some miniature LED's from @mazon.
They are great only problem I had with them.

Is the common wire is made of aluminum or Nickle!

No matter what I did I couldn't get it to solder! ☹️

At one point had to bring out my torch!
But, was afraid of scorching the wood supports.
On the mast!

So, On one side of the mast I have these ugly blotches of solder!
Oh, Did I mention my soldering iron would not get to temp!

It was a very frustrating day! But I persevered!
And accomplished my task!

I had ordered some wire but it was the wrong gauge!
I have now ordered the right gauge!
And it will arrive in a few days time!

    Hi Cash,

I'm going to use a 4 position RC switch!
    I ordered a week ago!
    Should be here soon!
Oh, I'm also using a 1 position RC switch as well!
This I'll use for her Radar!
    Both controllers ordered from eBay!

    Cheers, Ed

Picture is of single channel controller!

Binnacle and Radar!

Well, I finished building her binnacle and radar!
Her binnacle is about 29 mm tall!
made of the binnacle top and laminated round dowel!
Not a complicated task at all!

And the radar is made of 8 pieces!
And is going to be fully functional!
That is for a mock radar, LOL!!!

I did purchase a motor with gear reduction of 10 RPM's!
But, I think that's still to fast for the rotation of the radar!
Now, I believe I'll have to get some kind of gears.
With more gear reduction!

Amazon sells a 2 pack of continuous rotation micro servos. I should see them tomorrow. I’m going to test them see how they respond to running slowly for a good bit of time, I’ll post y’all my findings. I might, just might, get the gumption to do surgery on Paulas mast and radar and get it functioning again...
