Billing Paints!

I wanted to use authentic paints!
On the Smit Nederland build!

So, I've been ordering paints from Billings US!
They are Enamel Paints. and have a strong smell to them!

I think I'll have to look into Acrylic Paints instead!

The billings paint stink up the room I'm in!
In fact the smell takes over the whole house.

I think I'll look into Humbrol Paints. (Acrylic)!
I've worked with them!
They don't have any smell at all!

Billing Boats Paints!

After starting to collect the necessary paints.
For my Smit Nederland build!

I have come to the conclusion.
That I can't use them.
As they really smell!

I hadn't realized how bad they would smell.
Till I received them and started to use them!

But, I have ordered some Acrylic equivalents!

I should be getting them by next week!

Keep us informed on the progress of the paint problem.
It will be interesting to hear what they say.

    Go for it Ed 👍
These paints ain't so cheap that they can just take up shelf space gathering dust!
Maybe Billing USA has a reputation they won't want to loose.
    Or maybe they already did!?🙄
    Good luck, cheers, Doug 😎

Smit Nederland Painting!

Well I had some Black paint.
Left over from a previous project!

So, I was able to start painting.
Some of the Smit Nederland!

I did seal the parts I painted!
I used Eze-Kote to seal the parts!

I'm planning to seal the whole boat!
Then give it a good priming!

But, as this is a winter project.
I'm taking my time on it!

I still haven't built the smoke stacks or the Winch!

The smoke stacks will be built in a few.
As I plan on making them smoke!

Which means I have to use tubes.
Which I do have one.
I just have to figure where to make the cuts.
on the tube!

Slowly-slowly I'll get there!

    Hi Ed,
It's a good feeling when you get to a stage of a build when you start to splash a bit of paint on.
    Keep up the good work.

Mahogany Stain by Billing Boats!

Hi all,

I was going to use Mahogany Stain.
By Billing Boats!
But, the smell is too intense!

Does any one know where I can get Acrylic Mahogany Stain?
Or paint to simulate Mahogany Stain?

Thanks,

Ed

Billing Boats Paints!

Well, I got in contact with the folks at Billing Boats.
I was honest with them.
I told them how their paints.
Have an intense smell to them!

I told them how I haven't used any of them.
Because of thier smell!

They were very understanding!

They told me where to send the paints.
This I'll do tomorrow!

I really like the paints.
But, I don't like paint that makes me dizzie!

Hi Ed. Are you airbrushing or brushing? Tamiya makes some paints that are acrylic, you can thin them with their thinner, maybe just water. I don’t know what solvent the Billings paints are, but if they smell anything as pungent as say, model airplane dope I’d bet money they are lacquer based. Lacquer based paints dry fast, look good and adhere well, but if you don’t have adequate ventilation you’ll be talking to Elvis😁

    Hi Cash,

Well let's just say they smell alot!
I tried some of the black paint.
I didn't like the way it went on.
It seemed to be too thin!

And as I painted I had to hold myself up!
    Got too dizzy, LOL!

I'll be sending them back at the end of the week!

Oh, I'm now using paints from Humbrol!

    Cheers, Ed

F-14 Dilemma!

With my F-14 controller.

And converting from 2.4ghz to 40 Mhz.
And nothing working!

That is to say channel expander.
And the switch unit not working!

I emailed the folks at CMB.
This was two weeks ago!

So, I emailed them again this morning.

I was asked had I done everything correctly.
Which I had So, I been told to send everything back!
For a full Refund!

This I'll do at the end of the week!

This whole thing set me back $260.00
Plus $45.00 from Billing Paints!

For a grand total of $305.00!

Have I learned anything?
Yes, Do research!

$305.00 which I'll put back into the Smit Nederland Build!

Home made F-14 Controller Switch!

Let me start by saying Thanks.
To Doug "RNinMunich"!

I had used push button switches for Tug Brooklyn.
These were use to switch on her running lights!
And as Doug said, they did fail!
So, I asked and of course Doug pointed the way!
By making a recommendation of switches!
And one of his recommendation.
Was exactly what I needed!
So, I placed an other off of @mazon!
It did arrive quickly about a week.

Now after receiving the switches for Tug Brooklyn
Two will be used on Tug Brooklyn.

And I used two for my F-14 Controller!
I had seen where Switches are sold.
To control individual channels on the F-14!
Now the F-14 Controller.
I have had two open channels!

So, What I did was use two of the switches.
I had received for the Tug Brooklyn!

I had purchased ten 12" extensions.
So, I cut off the extension plug end.
And I soldered the extension to one of the switches.

I then plugged the switch to the F-14 Controller!
Open Channel of course!
I turned on the F-14 Controller.
Slipped the Switch and it worked!

I then made another one!
Now having two more switches.
I now have all 8 Channels working!

It's a real shame the Channel Expander.
Didn't work It would have been great!

But, Now with the two switches I made.
I'll be able to control what ever I want!

I'm thinking of putting smokers.
On the Tug Smit Nederland!

And I think I'll put a On/Off switch on the smokers!

Unfortunately I'm going to have to use.
Just one switch for her running lights!

I did want to be able to control her lights in a better way.
But, Couldn't So, one switch will do nicely!

Slowly, slowly a building I'll go!

    Dat's what I thunked Ed😉
Hang a P62 Quad switch on one of your spare TX stick channels and you'll have a total of 8 special functions available using 3 TX channels😁
Should keep you busy for a day or two rigging up that lot😂
    Best regards, also to Jenny.
    Good night, 💤💤💤, Doug 😎
BTW: If you use a 10K pot instead of a three way switch you can use it to drive a servo or an ESC, e.g. for bow / stern thrusters, cranes, winches ...... 😊

OK, the Humbrol paints are here!

I've worked with the Humbrol Acrylic Paints.
They have no smell to them!
So, won't have any fumes problems.....

I still have more paints to order.
As this is a big model!

Eze-Kote!

Today I spend the day.
Putting on Eze-Kote.
On all wooden surfaces!
Of the Smit Nederland!

I used 5 coats of diluted Eze-Kote!
Then another 5 coats of full strength Eze-Kote!

Now the surfaces are ready for priming!
I Hope!

Eze-Kote is one of the best investments.
I've made so far.
And of course by recommendations of Doug "RNinMuchin"!
(So now I'm a Munchkin am I? 😎)

Eze-Kote has no scent to it.
There for you can use it.
In closed in room.
With no problems of feeling dizzy!

The best thing about Eze-Kote.
Is it dries very quickly!

    Wow!
    "5 coats of full strength Eze-Kote!" 😮
Your boat must be bomb proof now!
Don't think I ever used more than three.
I found that diluted it took longer to dry, logical as more water in it!
And best not to dilute more than 20%.

BTW: Re your query "How many coats of Jotika wood stain"
Guess that depends on how dark you want the final effect.
I used 3 coats on my Sea Scout.
Be sure to let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next one.
Otherwise it may smear and smudge and produce a very uneven finish.
Don't ask how I know 😠 Didn't use enough patience!
When done and real dry seal it with matt, silk or gloss varnish to taste😋
    Cheers, Doug 😎

A bit of Priming!

The weather is cold out!
But, I took a few minutes.
To prime the Smit Nederland.

I just primed the Bulwark and Main deck!
But, having primed.
I now would like to prime the rest of the boat!
So, will have to order more primer!

I really shouldn't call it primer.
Because it's actually Light Grey paint!
But, It works just as well!

I'm going to wait till tomorrow.
To start painting the Main Deck!

Oh, I can't paint outside for a while.
As it's snowing at the present time!

So, I primed just in time!

Tomorrow, I'll be painting the Main Deck!
I'm going to use Humbrol #38 Gloss Green!
And the Bulwark will be painted.
Humbrol #24 Trainer Yellow!

Don't worry It hadn't started snowing.
When I primed the Smit Nederland!
But, I'll let it dry over night!
