Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Hi Martin,
My pleasure Mate, got plenty more where that came from if he needs more detail of other fittings. I've been trawling and collecting since I bought a 1/35 version from 'Basil'sDad' last September.
Pics are 'As bought', 'Current state' 🤔, PT109 crew with Kennedy, standing on the right hand end.
Good luck to your 'little lad' 😉 if you want to spoil him (or you if it turns out that way!) for choice look here-

BTW: mine is twin engined, 2xBL. Reckon that's enough for 1/35 scale!

The Aerokits P.T boat is a semi scale model based upon the Elco 80ft PT boat of WW2. The most famous of these being PT109 whose skipper was John F Kennedy who later became President of the U.S.A.

Though the Aerokits version is semi scale there is scope for minor modifications to bring it up to scale. There is a lot of information around on the internet and articles in related magazines etc which will provide modelers with good guidelines for achieving this.

Due to the size of the Aerokits version there is plenty of room in the hull both for a single motor version or a triple one, the latter bringing it up to true scale.

Though there are manufacturers who produce replicas of Aerokits I have not seen one for the P.T Boat but with a bit of searching,😁😁 plans can be found.

Hi Westquay
Plans of the Aerokits MTB.

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

I reckon that's a pretty decent scale speed, but maybe it needs re-trimming a little to get the forefoot out a little higher. I doubt if the Taycol Double Special that's in it will make it as fast as that even, so maybe one of my Merco 61s will have to go in and the lad can use the Taycol in his tug model. On our local river we can middle finger the "Saynos".

The fat rheostat is in one of the pictures of mouldbuilder's boat. Black and in very nice condition, IN the boat.

Hi Martin, this link - from you!
"All I can find, Doug, is this video which is entitled Aerokits PT boat. I wouldn't know a PTB from an MTB in a month of Sundays. it has guns!

Cheers,
Martin "

OK. I'll do you one complete and tested to copy and a couple of blank boards for the other two.
Yes of course Bob's Board were like a PCB.
I (and John) just wondered where you'd seen a rheostat!?
Suppose it must be somewhere in the background in Mouldbuilder's Blog.
Ciao, Doug

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Doug, I always seem to be behind with this thread, missing bits. Great to hear the board is a success. I would only need three at the most, or just do the one and I can copy that to make any more.
What video link do you mean?
I thought Bob's boards were printed circuit based rather than nice fat rheostats.

In most Mailboxes just open the message and somewhere in the command line at the top there should be a delete command, or a 'Dustbin' symbol.😉
Or just try hitting the 'Del' key.

I'm not wanting to delete the message just move it from my mailbox. No I don't use Outlook either but I can't think which one I use just now. An age thing LOL👍 Oo😊ps it's G Mail

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

John, You can't remove Messages, or any other post or anything else for that matter, from the website. Only an Administrator, e.g. Fireboat, can do that.
All you (or I) can do is delete the Notification of a message or post from our own personal Mailbox; Outlook or whatever you use.
Personally I avoid Outlook like the plague 😲
Ta for the 'Well Done' 👍 Had to correct a stoooooopid wiring mistook then all was well.

first test of the prototype board for your Taycol Supermarine successful😊
Next will make a 'production version'.
How many boards do you need all together?

Hi John,
As far as I know you can only delete the Notification from your own Mailbox not the Message itself on the website server.

Thanks John, full report soon.
Sleep? Wossat?? 😁
Where did you see the Bob's Board?
I must still have one somewhere! Was in my Sea Scout before her first (correction; second refit!) refit around 25 years ago.

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

BTW Martin; just looked at the video link you posted.
That boat looks underpowered to me, or too much weight forward?
Bow hardly comes outta the wet stuff, my little Sea Scout performs better than that 😁
Also seems to need the spray rails fitting.
With all that splash the crew would have had a lotta fun arming the torpedoes 🤔😲

PS; I'm about to test run the first Taycol conversion board I made for you on my Taycol Target. More soon 👍

What rheostat😉 I missed that?

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Hi Martin, a few ELCOs were used in the European theatre, they were USN standard Navy Medium Grey. Or RN medium Sea Grey depending who used 'em.
Most were deployed in the Pacific, where during the day they hid under the foliage in inlets on the islands. Hence the crews started painting them green (whatever they could 'acquire', as in the pics of the restored boat in the link I sent. Which is what I intend to do with mine. A la PT109 Kennedy's boat. Crew have already reported for duty😉
Some more info on colours here

Sorry, got me link references mixed up! Archive getting toooo BIG 😲

Thanks, Doug. Oh what a lovely rheostat, mouldbuilder. if you don't need it give me a price you'll take for it. I still have a hankering for those instead of damned ESCs with all their unreliability. And horrendous costs!

Thanks for the info. I'll pass it on to my son. Green, you say? I thought as naval craft, they were grey, but I don't do military, so I wouldn't know.

Martin

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Hi Martin, are you using a PC & Laptop or a 'Dumbphone?

On a PC all you have to do is left click on the Adobe image, then left click on 'Download' in the top left corner of the image window.
Windows will then ask you if you want to Open or Save the file.
Save it to disc first then you can view it anytime.
If you are using a Dumbphone I can't help you. I don't!

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Great, thanks, Doug. I can't open those pdfs, though. Not something I usually have problems with. But the pics. will be handy.
Due to the extreme heat changing to rain, I'm still in the workshop, so am getting on with the Spitfire kneeler hydro. it's built to 152VO rules, but I shall never race it as these guys don't come to England. Alas, they are mainly in the bits of Germany I started working in back in 1997 and who can blame them for not coming to Britain, land of tugs and tankers!
Can we get at those pdfs?

Hi Martin,
Here are the Aerokits instructions and plan that Mouldbuilder mentioned.
You may have to do some scaling up!
You might also find the photos of the originals on this site useful for some of the details.

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Hello.
I am updating the Aerokits PTB at the moment. I have had it for more than 30 years. I have been informed from several sources that it is an ELCO 80 foot. Unfortunately I have mislaid the plans. I am sure I have them here somewhere. if I find them I will try to copy and post here. I have pictured it in a Build Blog if you would like to look and see if it is the same model.😉
I cannot promise to finish one project before starting another. I know, I tried.
#11

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Oh sorry, missed all this somehow. My son's boat is the Aerokits (distributed by KeilKraft) 40" boat as in my picture. I hear that it's the Elco 80 footer in 1/24th scale. Does that sound likely to you war knowledgable chaps?
I just told him I would ask about for him, so he can gather info sufficient to finish the model, although I get the feeling "The Old Man" will get the job.

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Agreed John, but generally the USN used the term PTB, Patrol Torpedo Boat, and most other (allied?) navies used the term MTB Motor Torpedo Boat.
RN of course also had pure MLs and MGBs, Motor Gun Boats - some of which I believe also carried torpedoes, just to confuse the issue further?, but I never ran across an MPT up to now.😲
Nowadays it's just FAC or FPB for the little bruvvers without missiles!
Cheers, Doug 😎
PS Yep, I know the Wiki page you linked. That's the Power Boats demonstrator sent to the US from which the ELCO PTB boats were derived.

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

I think you would have to wade through the histories Doug but I think it comes down to the very varied arms carried. or just the crossover of Motor Patrol Boat and Patrol Torpedo boat and Motor Torpedo Boat. Maybe Motor Patrol Torpedo Boat too as reading through some of the history I think they weren't sure themselves which term(s) to use. The Wiki description is an easier and informative one to read.👍😊

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Hi Martin, I meant a pic of your son's model. Then we can perhaps tell what it's supposed to be. What size is it?
Could it be the Aerokits 40" ELCO PTB?
The MTB I was thinking of was the KielKraft kit 😲

Here are loads of pics of the 3 main types of PTBs; ELCO, Higgins and Huckins.

Well, there's odd, Doug. I can't find a picture of an actual Aerokits model that I KNOW to be a genuine Aerokits.

I'll have to keep looking for the picture on the box or something. I thought you might be familiar with the model.

Aerokits MTB, what is it?...

Hi all, my son is here and is asking what exactly his MTB is. Is it modelled on a particular type of boat? I've heard Elco, but don't know for sure. Also, does anyone have a set of Aerokits plans for the MTB?

Cheers,
Martin
