    Hi wcmbc, your reference to restaurants. You trust the restaurant to treat you well supply a good meal and you will not be ill afterwards. Of course restaurants are regulated but you may not want to organize one yourself just for a few meals and clearly it is an activity that can exist on its own. You have trust in the restaurant and that is their selling point.

    If you want to sail yachts there is no local 'shop' to go to as it is a niche interest and you have to do some things for yourself. The rest follows A committee in a club you belong to works on trust and doing what you want it to, they are elected or should be. Sometimes requests for an action need a reference to the 'real world' and are not persued.

    I joined a Bridge club 30 years ago which had been in operation for less than a year. It had the usual 'committee' all self appointed not the best but they set it up. Gradually losses due to age etc brought in elected new blood and we then got to be a good and well run club.

    I still know people who say we should be doing this or that but do not offer themselves for the job. If you contribute you will get a good return.

    Looking at your last paragraph ponds here get users straight away. In my area we have gravel extraction and lots of holes with water in them. Most are owned by fishing clubs or controlled by sailing clubs. You would not be made welcome to bring a boat along and sail it.

    We have lots of water locally but not much to suit our hobby, I am afraid money talks and excludes!

    Hi all, re the thread on committees. They fulfill a purpose I am one of those that end up on committees. If you take part in something that needs organising then someone has to think ahead and plan so that you get what you want.

    I want the things I like doing to happen, and so you need a say in this. A committee member should always represent members interests and I have no time for the cliques that sometimes form.
    Because of my own position in a club (Secretary), I was approached by a group in another club and they represented 40 odd disaffected members who wanted to up and leave and start again elsewhere. They were unhappy with their own committee who treated them with disdain! One afternoon I overheard 2 of their committee talking and was genuinely shocked with the attitude they had to the members.
    Apart from that I said I would consider their situation and think of the plight they saw themselves in and respond a week later.

    I spoke to the group again and said you have to accept that it is your fault that you have such an awful committee. As good men, you did nothing and were taken advantage of.
    Get together sort out who is willing to stand for various positions on the committee and at the up coming AGM use your block vote to elect them.

    A few months later they did this and it is now a happy club which I also belong to now!
    So if there are just a few of you why have a committee? but when there is administration to do not everyone finds this easy. For me I have experience in admin and management and hands on technology, not to any real depth but enough to see gentle ways of doing and achieving.
    So do not knock committees, as in life they can be mixed in their abilities and effectiveness.

    If you do have a vote use it and weed out the self important guys who love the power.

    I agree with Admiral Doug! Power to the people! But use it wisely.

      @Roy. I hear you and can relate. However, this clinging to the committee idea is WW1. Everyone loves a good meal, yet nobody has a say in how a restaurant is run. As long as the meal is good and the price is affordable you may be a regular soon. Why should RC ponds be any different? Here's water; bring boats; have fun.

    I'm looking forward to a trip to the Lake District and in particular a visit to Lake Windermere, hopefully will see some steam boats out there 🤞can anyone recommend places to visit I know I'll be heading to the Windermere Jetty Museum 😁

    Hi everyone. Just to tell you that South Africa is shifting focus as more people start to realize the old school clubs are doomed. The last 4 months have seen the opening of four new sailing venues in one province and it wasn't a committee decision. In fact, the committee all agreed it will never happen. And here we are. 20 years of "growing the hoɓby" has come to an end in just 4 months. Now we are growing the rc Boating hobby. Time to kick the habit of committee-religions and take action. 😎😍👍

      @Scamp. Yes. That sounds about right but the reality is affected by personalities. You walk into the AGM to elect the members to act for the members and a month later two of them change into Hitler and Mogabe and you are stuck with the tyranny until the next AGM. I get you. 🤣

    I had sane problem after a dozen years in Puerto Rico I became accustomed to weather. Moved back to Massachusetts n I freeze in summer.

    I’m just about done with my DE1040 Garcia 5 foot ship. I have printed the side stabilizer paddles n will put on next. A few paint touch ups n it’s finally done. I need to build the DASH drone as final part.

      It is always amazing how many of these old carriages can be seen. Look and dream ok, Do I have something like that myself? I don't have time for that!
      One more thing:
      The Opel is not mine, we have the white new motorhome next to it.
      Either you have a classic car or you make model boats! I've decided in favour of model boats! All right?

      At the risk of being labelled an old timer fanatic 😊 I have to say that cars like that were built with pride and outlasted many of their owners. Sadly this is not something we can say of today's cars where "replacement" is as often as a plug change on a 1960 Impala

    Last Sunday (2024-04-21) we had a pleasant spring day. I went to our local pond to watch some fellow modellers sailing their ships.
    A Type VII U-Boot, a Guardia Civil Patrol and Rescue Motor Boat and a small fast craft were there.
    Unfortunately, weather was warm for one month, and water was not as clean as desirable, causing issues with small pumps. I will add more pictures and some videos in other sections.

      The weather where I live has been quite abnormally temperate this winter.

      In spite of that, my wife and I decided to take a winter road-trip south.
      We left the tundra in Minnesota on 1/31. We headed south for some winter warmth. Yesterday we were traveling west on I-40 in northern New Mexico with 38 to 50 mile an hour crosswinds. We looked at the weather forecast for our destination, and discovered that we would need to “re-winterize” our motor home if we stayed the course … as the overnight low was going to be 20F. We altered our course and are now only 20 miles north of Mexico, where the overnight low was a balmy 35F.
      The scenery is beautiful, but the weather is NOT what we expected.

      Here on the west central coast of Florida, this has been a crazy winter. Much cooler than an average winter, about two weeks ago we had a break with a few days setting record highs (into the low 80's F). Back to the cool, damp, and occasionally breezy weather.
      The tourists and recent transplants don't seem to mind. I moved here 60 years ago and my blood has "thinned out". Those tourists walk around in shorts, tee shirts, and flip-flops while we are bundled up.
      Today, another "front" moved through bringing a lot of rain, cancelling the meet as Kevin mentioned. Prior to this we had several days of good weather for model boating. Why is it the weather seems to be at its worst on Sundays?.

    On other websites you are contacted after a year and removed a month later if you don't use it.
    I know that this would be a somewhat unusual request . . . But with over 7000 members . .

      I too have noticed that.
      Particularly in such as the 'Birthday This Week' Notifications.
      Names crop up that I've never heard of. When I check them out I usually find that they signed on several years ago and then went AWOL after a few months, without ever posting anything.

      In some unfortunate cases Birthday This Week is announced for much respected members who have left us, departing to the Great Model Shipyard in the heavens, and are sorely missed.
      Latest example being our dear Fleet Admiral Nerys, who would have been 91 last January 28th had she not sadly died last March after a long and courageous fight against illness.
      A lovely lady with a consummate knowledge of sailing barges, especially Thames barges which she captained during her long maritime career.

      Hi Mike, very fair observation.

      It's not just a problem of this forum, many register just for a question or not even that.

      I might think that the administrator (in an intelligent and far-sighted way) prefers to have many members even if not very participatory and to encourage the spread of naval modelling.

      Maybe they don't create a big IT inconvenience, but only our administrator can answer this.
      I wouldn't cancel anyone.

      The other thing to bear in mind, is not just the number of members on the site, but also system storage. Just storing a new members details, even if they never use the site is a miniscule amount of storage, and hence costs. So the time taken for Stephen to clear unused accounts is probably far from cost effective.
