Built on an Alan Horne hull, the deckhouses are all scratch built from mahogany and brass from photographs.
The deck is planked with 100metres of 2mm x 0.5mm Lime stripwood, each plank edged using a pencil to achieve the effect of corking.

A boat after my own heart! Looks really good. Like the level of detail, even if you can't see it on the water. Which sails are controlled by the winch?
How successful is the sailing peformance with all that sail area aft?

The hull and deck are planked using cut up blinds from Ikea (they are made if Lime) it has working lights and radar via a 4 way switching unit on one channel, the working winch and trawl net are worked from another channel. HI fellow model leers.this is my latest model.Built in 1926' for the Ffyfe(bananas) family. Originally it was run on steam,but in 1939 converted to diesel,this was kept until 1957 when all the staterooms were replaced by cargo holds . She was then made into a feeder bringing eleven thousand boxes from Rotterdam to Southampton. She was scrapped in the seventies.my model of her was from 1926 the scale is approx 1/30th her length is 48 inches including bowsprit, and has a beam of 10 inch amidships. She is totally scratch built, plank on frame, all the decks are individually planked with black card in between , wheel house and all other parts are mahogany. She runs on a decaperm geared motor @ 6 volts, and the lighting system consists of 10 accommodation lights, port and starboard , wheelhouse, and both mast headlights,the large saloon skylight is also lit up with a set of disco lights on a separate circuit. The funnel houses a heavy duty smoke unit switched on by switching unit.

💭 Hi Chiefpurser, Stardust looks really good, did you have problems with buoyancy, and how much does it weigh, how do you transport and launch such a big model?

HI thanks for the comments. No problems with buoyancy only 6oz lead to bring her upright, a bit tender but will be adding a further 16 oz of ballast before next outing. She will weigh 18 lbs. transport is not a problem back seat of the car. Lifting and lowering into lake with two strops. This is not really a big model. I have one at 58 inches. We sail in several locations in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. My next model is already on the stocks and will be a jet boat a bit like a super doper cabin cruiser, own design and scratch built as per stardust. Regards jim

Scratch built in 2004 from my own plan. Two layers of planks on ply frames, ply deck planked with 3/8 1/16 strips. Length of hull 50" by 13" breath. No motor sail only, winch for main & mizzen, sail arm for fore sails. Featuers a centre plate lowered by gravity and raized be a drum winch, also an expanding rudder, this has two servos to opperate. sails can be reefed or removed depending on weather conditions. Very good sailer Just goes in my car with the top mast & gaff boom lowered.

This boat was built from Vic Smeed's Silver Mist design, from the fifties I think. The boat is 36'' long by 9''. it is planked in obeche on 6mm birch ply frames with solid blocks for the bow and lower stern sections, epoxied on the inside. it is powered by an MFA geared 500 motor- 2.5:1 I think with a 7.2v NIMH battery. There were one or two details to complete when these photos were taken at Crealy in Exeter- there still are to be honest! I thought I'd add this in as I'm so Impressed with the look of this new site.

I finally got round to adding more photos! Thanks for your help.. and by the way I have spent many happy holidays sailing on the Broads, twenty consecutive years, usually staying at Martham or on Hickling and pottering in my clinker dinghy- magic!

Another boat the same as mine seen on a local auction site. Anybody have any ideas as to the manufacturer ?. The dimensions are L 31", W 71/2", H 7" and by the looks of it were Ic powered (or at least mine was and was later changed to electric). Hulls are balsa and planked to 1st 1/4 then finished to the stern with with longer angle cut 'planks'. Cabin top is ply sides with balsa roof and deck is ply and has printed ? planking.
Someone will know but I haven't been able to pin it down to any kit even after going through all my 60s and 70s Model Boat mags.

Another boat the same as mine seen on a local auction site. Anybody have any ideas as to the manufacturer ?. The dimensions are L 31", W 71/2", H 7" and by the looks of it were Ic powered (or at least mine was and was later changed to electric). Hulls are balsa and planked to 1st 1/4 then finished to the stern with with longer angle cut 'planks'. Cabin top is ply sides with balsa roof and deck is ply and has printed ? planking.
Someone will know but I haven't been able to pin it down to any kit even after going through all my 60s and 70s Model Boat mags.
Thanks for that bit of info Steve, will head off on that tack and scour the high seas of the internet for any sightings of a vessel of that name. Will let you know if I find her.

HI Steve, thanks for pointing me in that direction, you were close with the Maycraft and they do look a bit similar, but sorry, no cigar. Your suggestion led me to the Vintage Modelworks site and I was told it is a 'FAIRACRE 11, luxury Thames cruiser' built from Modelmaker plan 709 and designed by Philip Conolly (late 50s - 60s) you were correct on the date though and now I can give it a name, (even if it does sound like a piece of farmland!)
Mystery solved and thanks to Mike Cummings of Vintage Modelworks for his info. I have found there are still plans available as well and I may purchase one just for the hell of it to go with the boat. Bit of a coincidence to find 2 of these unusual subjects here in NZ, be interesting to know when they were built and where, (may have even been Imported by people coming to live here) next question,- has anyone built one ?

This model is enlarged by 1.7 giving a length of 36'' and a scale of 1:16. The finished boat weighs about 15 1/2lbs and is powered by an MFA 919D 540 with 2.5:1 reduction, using an Mtroniks ESC and Planet 2.4ghz radio.
The hull was planked in obeche on 6mm ply keel and frames with mahogany blocks at bow and stern. The photos were taken on her maiden voyage at Crealy in Exeter.

I admire people who post building blogs but always balk at it myself as I am such a sporadic builder- everything gets done eventually but it can take years! Perhaps I should take more photos as I go along and post a blog retrospectively. incidentally, I would love to build ( and may start) a double sized Guardsman by Vic Smeed- the man could do no wrong!

Nice work, beautifully made and looking great on the water, a very different and classic subject!
I have a Vic Smeed Thornycroft 73' PT boat (38") which took me about 30yrs to complete, and after about 10yrs of searching on line I actually found 2 great photos of the very boat it was modelled off (HMT49), and credit to Vic Smeed it was pretty much dead on for detail, although as with most PTs,HSLs and the like being chopped and changed there were differences even between the two photos. I think it is a bit of a lottery as to which boat you build at which time in its life if you are looking at an actual vessel. I bought my plan in the late 60s from a hobby shop here in NZ and I didn't finish it till the late 90s!. Bring back the good old stuff!

first time on the water for my latest build, 23" model of british power boat co. 68ft type 3 hants and dorset raf high speed launch,
power is speed 400 driving 35mm three bladed prop, 7.2volt 3300mha nimh planet 2.4 ghz radio,
scratch built, I used scaled down drawings from my aerokits plans then gave the frames more shape to replicate the curves of this boat, the forward section where diaganally planked.
then sides and bottm as normal with sheet ply, deck is teak planks.
I sail on the rotary pool at penzance.
