Despite the problems we are trying to overcome on this site, I note, with pleasure, that the overall membership is still growing steadily and today stands at 6,052. It would be nice if some of the new members could post telling us a little about themselves and what type of boats they are interested in. I'm sure we all want to wish them a warm welcome and let them know that there are many knowledgeable people on here who will do all they can to advise them if needed.
Cheers, Nerys

Hi Nerys.
You are absolutely right in what you say. It is my belief that this thread had to go in this direction to ultimately arrive at exactly what you would like to see. If the problems remained under the surface, we would be in the same position a little further down the road.
It is my great hope that the site can get back to boats from now on but this can only happen if lessons have been learnt.
Peter.

I cannot promise to finish one project before starting another. I know, I tried.
I started this thread with a view to asking members to help rescue this site from the oblivion it has been falling into and take it back to the great, happy, informative and fun site it was not so very long ago. It was not intended to be a platform for further bickering. Please, please, pretty please, can we have lots of nice posts about boats and associated things.
Cheers, Nerys

I haven’t been here in a few weeks, so I’m not quite sure I know exactly what’s going on. However, if I’ve said anything untoward please, let me know. Sometimes I shoot my mouth off before the rangefinder is enabled.

I agree with all your comments on many things including the last posts of yesterday and today.
I love this site and most of the inclusions that are posted. It is a comprehensive diary from a great many people with a wealth of knowledge and experience in both model boating and the University of Life.
What I do not like,is as was said a few moments ago and in the recent past by myself as well as many others is the personal, abusive and offensive posts that continue to appear.
That is why I complained about a recent rant which involved a personal attack on several members.
It was subsequently removed quite properly by Stephen.
I havn’t been posting for some time, because of the ill feeling that is being caused by primarily one individual.
Martin (Martin555) has left the site, sadly probably never to return because of the same and another issue.
His vast knowledge and experience is SADLY missed by a great many people.
We were chatting this morning and both feel that all the upset is so unwarranted.
This site in NOT held together by just one person and his views but all those who are members.
This site could be the best boat site on the internet once more if certain individual stop pouring oil on the fire and upsetting people.
Let us forget the latest round of bickering and get on with what we joined for.
A lot of members donate their hard earned money to keep the site afloat and it’s up to us to ensure they are getting value for money and not paying for the antics of a kinder garden.
All that is required is a little more thought before posting any comments or replies.
If that occurs then perhaps myself and others that are missed will return.
I have no problem who posts whatever threads as long as it is in the correct section.
As has been said, you do not have to read it if you don’t like it,but by the same token don’t slag it off as someone else may love it.
I now feel that this thread has run its course to the fullness of time, but as Nerys started it because of a genuine concern for the site I think it should be her decision to close it if she thinks fit.
I do hope that no one individual will post a dubious attention seeking reply,to have the last word.
Onwards and upward Ladies and Gents

Sorry for pointing this out Doug, but you are doing exactly what you are complaining about, ie, invading someone elses' post (sorry Nerys) with your personal views,- how about we give this a rest, and carry on as we were pre lurgey. As to covid 'threads', there was only 1 which I did weeks ago and have done nothing since.
BTW it's my thread and you don't have to read it. If others want to post any new positive studies etc on it, they are free to do so. I've suggested a very simple solution to post invasions, but if people can't be bothered typing a few words in a title, then they can't be very serious. Can't say a lot more really. I'm getting tired of the complaining, lets get back to models !

A lot of that from other Googled sources and not his own records or experience unlike some of us.............

"Seems that threads eventually tend to drift off topic as other items get included.
The thread then looses its relevance and serious modellers give up. "
Exactly Rowen.👍
During my time as moderator I frequently had to remind folks that build blogs especially are personal, and can be printed as a memento, and asked them to start new threads when they drifted off topic. I was often requested by build bloggers to remove such off-topic posts.
For an open forum thread I took a 'fair game' view and waited to see how the originator would react, some took part themselves in the off-original topic chat so OK let it ride.
Some objected to off-topic posts so I asked the folks involved to start again in a new thread, and then deleted the errant posts.
Martin also quickly picked up these techniques when he joined me.😀
Who will do it now?
As far as Non Hobby threads were concerned basically my main concern to was to reduce/stop the proliferation of Covid related threads - as others have said - we have been swamped with this from all other media sources practically 24/7 for over a year. We don't need it here as well.
All the best Rowen and Nerys.
Doug.

Agree with you.
To me the problem is not having a thread for Non hobby matters. That can be ignored - as I often do.

Peter, I am pleased that you have given this subject your due consideration, and agree that something has to be done, but disappointed that you want to step into the background until all is well again. Please Peter you are the very sort of person we need posting all sorts of things about the boats you are building or are thinking of building, or even about the model boat scene in Hungary. We have enough people pontificating about the demise of the site, and whilst that too is welcome, that's not what we desperately need, it's real posts about boats that's urgently needed and you are one of the people who can actually do this.
Cheers, Nerys

JB. I think this is exactly what Nerys wanted. A frank discussion regarding steps needed to save the site. "Over to you"
I have read this thread with great interest. I think we all know why this site is in the predicament it finds itself. The removal of the moderators. I have not posted here for a long while and will not until I see something that gives me hope that things will change.

I have really enjoyed this site, and as long as I am not banned for posting this, might again in the future. I totally agree with all of the things said by JB and Bill and most of Mikes comments.
It is true that there is a section for non related topics. Surely this is enough. It just needs education of users to post in the correct manner. It also needs a set of strict rules that must be observed by all with particular focus on the treatment of fellow members. The site also needs moderating, however difficult this would be. The moderators must be fair and work as a team of one, something that has been seriously lacking.
I do hope that I can post updates on all of my stalled projects some day soon. I really hope that the site is still here when I feel ready, if I have not been banned.
Best wishes to you all.
Peter.

Hi Mike, I have asked Stephen about the possibility of preventing the avatars of the people replying to others posts, from being displayed, (therefore deleting the posters' avatar and removing the key visual reference to the poster) I have asked if he is able to perhaps just put the number of replies to the post under the posters avatar. This might help us keep track of the subject a bit easier, as it would be easy to spot the posters avatar.
Also it would be better if we had a non boating subject to post, to try and post it in the non hobby section to save any problems (we are all guilty of forgetting to do this, but posts tend to flow naturally as does normal conversation, and wander at times. If people can use the non hobby section, and give their posts a new subject title, it will still come up, but you don't have to read it if you are not interested.
No-one has mentioned the lurgey for a week now, so there should be no problems with that. I don't mind what people add to my posts, couldn't care less, just makes it more interesting for me. The more the merrier, and as long as people are not going to try and stop that, I'll be a happy camper. easy way to control off topic replies as I have said before, just put 'on topic replies please' or 'topic only' in your title, and if that won't help, nothing will. Give it a go if you are serious, and see if it helps,- can't hurt anything.
JB
PS, sorry for hijacking your post Nerys. (along with everyone else😁 )👍

Hi Stephen, Jb and any others who are following this thread, I said in my last post that I considered this to be a model boat site and this is probably what I will post about, however if the opinion of other members is to have other threads then so be it (majority rules).
One point I would make is that I hope members will make sure they stick to the subject headings and not highjack threads (in both the forum and the blogs) making it difficult to follow a subject that starts with an interesting title and ends up talking about something of no interest to that particular reader (LST 368 comes to mind - landing craft to sun flower). (I know this will dig a little at the moderator issue but its up to members to keep on the straight and NARROW)
I would finish by saying that I really enjoy this site, reading about different builds and picking up hints and tips from others and also giving help where I can, so please as others have said forget the in fighting and lets get on with making this site something to be proud of and most of all something to look forward to logging into.

I don't see the issue of having a few non-hobby related threads going. The website is primarily of course model boats, so I can't imagine other topics will ever dominate.
It would be nice to get back to fun and humourous non-hobby threads mind you, and away from COVID a bit 😊

Disappointing to hear your views on alternative subjects Doug, as there is a specific category on the site for non hobby chit-chat. You have the option of not reading it, rather than complaining about it. I have no problem with others posting moves to Hungary, building sausage roll trucks, lunch in a pub, holiday trips to a lake in Canada etc. I thought this was a site for everyone and where members supported each other, but you ( and unfortunately a few others) seem to be apposed to that, and as you've said, you would have 'squashed' such alternative posting, (which sounds a bit like a man with a small moustache who was around a while back)
I certainly will not bother posting any more non boat items ( the covid subject was aimed at seeing how members in other countries were handling it, and finding any new information which may have appeared to help prevent catching it in the first place (you obviously didn't find the new Canadian mask link interesting) You seem to be attacking people on a personal level which I find to be un-warranted, as this site may be one of the few platforms some people have to converse with others about models and a bit about their lives, (not everyone wants to join Facebook) . You do what you think is right for you, and I'll do the same.
I joined this site around 2011 (before the site update where I lost my password) and re-joined recently. Since then I think I have contributed to the site as much (if not more ) than most, and have enjoyed it, but recently it seems to have taken a rather sad turn, which has caused me to loose interest to a large degree. As you can see by this, I have read your huge diatribe, hence the reply. I don't appreciate being attacked for trying to create discussion on a legitimate forum. Shame, as I thought we were on the same page at one stage?
Tossing up whether to bother any more, as I have real boats to work on, sail etc, and summer's coming.
Regards
JB

Mornin' Nerys, (Yaaawn🙊)
I believe that most members agree with us and Rowen.
I hope things calm down now and we can all get back to business 😉
Proper Gad About now aren't you 😮 Good for you👍
Alice seems to have done sterling work on your Campervan.
Some pics of how she's fitted it out would be nice.
Wishing you fair winds and a chance to sail during your travels.
Looking forward to your mission report Admiral.
All the best, Doug 😎

Dear Doug,
Thank you for agreeing with me as to what is acceptable on the site.Let's hope others read it, take due notice and act accordingly.
I note you and I are , as usual, awake all night. Whilst you are tucked up nicely in Munchen, I'm sitting in the camper van in deepest Cumbria, near Maryport. Tried to sail on a pond at the Windermere Steam Jetty yesterday, but it was a dead flat calm. Still more of that when I write my full report on the land cruise.
Cheers,
Nerys

Hi Seaspray,
"Not too sure of the site yet. Is there a "Other Hobbies" on here ?"
No there isn't, and frankly I hope there never will be.
This is a site dedicated to Models Boats, in all their wonderful facets.
There are many other sites dedicated to buses, cars, trucks, tanks and all manner of other things that folks like to recreate in miniature.
More power to their elbows😉
But here WE LIKE BOATS!!
Cheers, Doug 😎

Dear Nerys,
"As far as I can see there is only one thread running at the moment which is not model boat related and that has a general interest which affects us all, but does give rise to rather fierce defence of either opinion and has caused arguments on here before.
I think that we really want posts that are directly related to model boats, whether it is planning, building, fitting out with RC gear etc and of course sailing them.I see no reason why real boats, ships and experiences of them cannot come into it as long as the comments are a subject of interest. In other words, if I want to talk about sailing a Thames Barge, or paddling a coracle years ago, then that's alright because I hope readers will find it interesting. Another subject I think should be discussed, is sailing locations, because these affect us all, particularly if we are going on holiday and want to take a boat with us in the hope of getting a sail."
I couldn't agree more 👍👍👍👍👍
There are more than enough media sources, both passive and interactive, for other 'social' topics, such as Covid🙄
A Model Boats site is NOT the place for folks to vent their spleens about their own hobby horses. In the light of recent events if I still had the ability to do so I would squash any such posts/threads on appearance.
I hope Stephen can now find the time and courage to do just that.
Cheers, Doug 😎

Young at heart 😉 Slightly older in other places.😊 Cheers Doug
mturpin013 Just a thought as I may at times build other types of models. I'll look at non hobby chat.
After thought it should have been
"Any Other Builds" thanks/

There is a non hobby chat section in the forum section, look at the top line there are a number of different categories, however a specific section on "other hobbies" would be a question to ask Stephen who is the owner of the site.
I'm sorry and not wishing to be pre-emptive but the name of the site is "Model Boats website".
On a more positive note Seaspray I'm sure we all look forward to seeing your return with the Icebreaker

I'll return when me head is cleared and chest infection gone, a beauty this time . Have had a relook at the icebreaker where things went wrong on top of it now, thanks to my helpers.
Not too sure of the site yet. Is there a "Other Hobbies" on here ? I built the London Routemaster kit and put it on Mayhem under that section

Well Nerys,
Always was a sucker for nice requests, particularly from Wales.
Let me pull my first thoughts together and post something later this week. At least it will get the ball rolling.

As far as I can see there is only one thread running at the moment which is not model boat related and that has a general interest which affects us all, but does give rise to rather fierce defence of either opinion and has caused arguments on here before.

When the winds before the rain, soon you may make sail again, but when the rain's before the wind, tops'l sheets and halyards mind
Well said Rowan, we can't let this site die. Let's hear about your HMS Scimitar. Don't wait until you have a lot of material to post, just tell us about her and why you wanted to build that particular model, that would start things off for us.
I'm pleased to see that my post did manage to get several answers, and, in the main, agreeing that something urgent must be done to rescue our site.
Cheers, Nerys

Mike, you have persuaded me!
The site is too valuable to let die.
Going to write up my latest HMS Scimitar FTB project as a blog, be a short while before worth submitting.
The only reason I'm not posting any build detail is because I don't have anything in the dry dock, however one on its way. The issues hinted at for me weren't evident at the time so no change, but I must say some people left not knowing the full story which I now know and really its not worth loosing the site for so please come back and start posting.
Rowen please take the time to post your activities that's the only way the site will survive

Hi Rowen Do agree that some posts are more social.
Look at the first 10 posts on the site page and only 2 are not boat related.
I believe when we did away with the moderators we lost the one's doing the work to help and answer posts

Afraid I have rather lost interest in posting, although am still building avidly.
The site seems to have lost its focus and become just another Social Media outlet where all kinds of other topics are described.
Why not get back to our core strength and let the Facebooks etc serve the need for the unrelated topics?

If you know morse, you will recognise the above subject as SOS - SAVE OUR SITE.
I mean it shipmates, please come to the rescue of this great site and start posting again. Since a certain unfortunate incident a few weeks ago, the number of daily posts has dropped from about thirty to three or four. It's not good enough! Please forget any differences you may harbour, and don't let our site die. Let's have your posts, boats you are building, boats you have built, boats you'd like to build, in fact anything model boat related. And if something else stirs you enough and you think the other members would be interested, then let's hear about it. I'll do all I can. Over to you.
In hopeful anticipation. Nerys
