MT, we bought our Cricut Maker when they first came out after seeing a demonstration in our local hobbycraft store.
It's great for cutting all sorts of materials but limited on thicker plastic or polycarbonate. Up to 1.0mm thick It's fine, but thicker ones it struggles.
Have managed to cut light ply and veneers up to 1.2mm thick.
It excells on vynils for graphics and lettering.
My only gripe would be the lack of drawing software. But if you have a decent cad program it is quite easy to use.
Look it up on the Web and watch it in action. Personally I would prefer a desktop laser, but price prohibitive.
All in all its good, but could be better, the newer models recently launched may have improved.
Cheers Colin.

That's good to hear, I ask because I'm interested if the type of cutting machine is a worthwhile investment.

Sorry MT, I've not had chance to get the acrylic sheets yet, but I think I have managed to scan the frames and windows suitably well enough to use in my Cricut Maker, I did cut them out of paper and lay the cutouts over the originals and they seem to be quite a good fit.
I'll do another set in art card next before trying it on the acrylic sheets which I hope to get at the weekend.

Jb,

The days of a good rub down are well and truly over.
It is more a case of oiling the joints.LOL!!

Sorry Colin we drifted again.

Re -I am slowly getting refurbished

Hi Martin, how many coats of varnish are you having applied ? and will your wife be rubbing you down first ? 😂

Think after the Biblical three score and ten we all need to look at the brighter side of things as Nerys does - most of us seem to need maintenance one way or the other - but there's always something we can do.

Knew an elderly fellow many years ago - was going blind but wanted to write & illustrate a book about the African countryside buses - which were always colourful and filled to overflowing. Painted the walls of his garage white - then painted huge murals on them which he was able to see - had a photographer in to reduce the size & had the book published - was a great success and sold out quickly...........

Thanks Martin, I'm afraid the maintenance is a bit like the Forth Bridge used to be, constant for evermore paint and paint again, but I wish the comparison was similar and they'd find something that would fix the everlasting repainting as they have done for the bridge. Still, I shouldn't really complain, I get lots of good days and anticipate many more now that the campervan is up and running.

Nerys,
Sorry to hear the routine maintenance is ongoing, hopefully you will end up with more good days than bad.

I keep undergoing a maintenance programme three times a week in the hospital, doesn't do anything in the way of refurbishment in fact I'd say that I'm not weathering very well at all.

I still have mine which I built with my dad's supervision. See in my harbour. Only renovated once in 60 years and still my favourite boat.

Looks like I may have to try and make some on my Cricut, pity I don't have reverse engineering software as I still have the original acrylic sheets that my set were lasered from. So I will try and draw a set using these sheets as templates.
Not keen on the ply frame surround from slec.

Thanks MT, I always use canopy glue on my cars and boats. Great stuff, only ever had one bad experience on a model where it reacted with the paint.

Hi Colin you should use canopy glue its waterproof and dries clear (if you do get any in the wrong place)
I used it on my Crash Tender and current Police boat

If I remember correctly, I glued the SLEC windows in my crash tender.

Thanks guys and gals for your suggestions, I tried the slec set but found it hard to drill for the fitting pins.
The set on my original was already pre drilled so fitting was a breeze.
Would love another set like these as I don't have very steady hands anymore.

Hi Colin
I built a crash tender from a kit I acquired from a member who was fleeing this happy land a year or so ago and purchased windows for it from SLEC.
cheers, Nerys

Good evening all, approximately 10 or 11 years ago a fellow member was producing laser cut windows and frames for the aerokits crash tender.
I purchased a set and fitted in mine during its restoration.
I now need another set for my current one under construction. Does anyone know which member I purchased the originals from and are they still available.
Cheers Colin.
