Becker rudders

In the not too distant future I intend to invest in a couple of single prop stern thrusters from the German site, I know they are not cheap but even though I know how to make my own I do not have the equipement needed.
I will let you know what they are like as soon as I get them.
Regards
Steve.

Becker rudders

HI Steve
Thanks for the info, have had a good look around their site and enjoyed the tour.
I've started making my own as the response from manufacturers was abysmal.
Hobby-Lobby-Modellbau is a great site and the rudders in there are exactly what I wanted, a bit expensive as you say but look like value for money. I wish I had known about them sooner.

Becker rudders

I am new to this site so I did not see the original post, but I do have info on flap rudders.
Please excuse any mistakes as this is my first attempt at doing this.
Anyway, here goes, WWW Rudderpower.com is an excellent site for any info wanted on flap rudders,(there is even a video showing exactly how these things work). I know that everything on there is for full size rudders but you should get the info that you need to be able to make your own.

Hobby-Lobby Modellbau is a German site (but can be read in English) and they sell brass beckerrudders, they are not cheap but they do look good.

They come under the section Drive Shaft, Coupling.

I know that this info might be too late for you to use but hopefully it will be helpfull.

Kind regards,
Steve

Becker rudders

HI Graham
That is exactly what I would like to have. I'll have to try harder to get a pair from Billings. They do look like they are well engineered.
So how are you getting on with your build?
My inquiry is for the Esvagt Caroline, it's an Orion Mouldings hull that I got off E bay. The drives should be "Z" drives but they are so complicated to make without expensive tooling, that I chose to go down the Kort and Becker rout.
Many thanks for your valuable help.

Mike.

HI Mike
Can you do anything with this drawing its saved as a jpg file so you might be able to down load it. it would give you some idea of size and construction all parts on the Billing one or brass but it might be possible to use some other material.

HI Graham
That's just the thing I need although a bit complicated to make with limited tools.
I've got a picture of one I found on the net, a bit unsure if it will download on here. I've managed to put a picture on here as File 1, you will see that it's quite simple to make and the operation doesn't require any soldering. I would prefer to have the more substantial ones as in your file. I have a pal who might make them for me but like to be "hands on" with all parts of my builds.
Hope this comes out ok
Mike.

Becker rudders

HI Mike,
Here is a photo of my Bekker Rudder, as supplied with the Billing Smit Nederland Kit as you can see I have not started using them yet, the blades are Solid Brass about 6mm thick shaped like an aerofoil equally about the center line difficult to photograph, so the photo is plan only the rule should give an idea of size and the cutting board will also help. if you still have a problem with sizes I might be able to make a CAD Drawing of the parts but that will take some time. My CAD skills are rusty at the moment.

HI Graham
As usual any help will be appreciated, I think I've got a good idea of how to make them but will consider anything before finalizing the design.
Many thanks.

Graham & Gregg

I E mailed Cornwall Model boats, they don't keep the Korts in stock and haven't had the rudders for over 6 months.
I will get in touch with Westbourne and Robbe Schluter tomorrow.
Thank you both for the advice.

Robbe still produce becker rudder kits and should be well suited mto the size you are after.
Cornwall model boats or Westbourne should be able to supply from stock, or failing that, contact Robbe Schluter direct in leicestershire and order direct.
Best wishes.

HI Mike,
The Billing Becker Rudders that I told you about, are Brass I have them in the Smit Nederland but whether they are available to buy separately to the kit I don't know, but I do know that anything Billing is generally expensive. Try contacting them through their site they might be able to help, as the kit is still in production. Graham 😊

Becker rudders

Hello Dave
Many thanks for your input.
I did't really want to go down the white metal route for a Becker rudder.
Past experience has shown that the only white metal fitting that's any good are the fixed ones, any with moving parts aren't up to the job. With the parts being under water they might suffer from pitting and break.
I'd prefer to have brass ones and can't understand why boat kit manufacturers don't go the extra mile and give us value for money by supplying better quality parts.....after all they do charge a lot of money for their products.
Sorry... shouldn't have used the site to have a moan.
Regards
Mike.

HI Chippy
Model Slipway's Maggie M trawler uses a Becker rudder and the kit had a white metal casting included. I helped a friend build his model and the rudder was functional but needed a fair amount of work to get the correct free movement. The model is still sailing at my club site so must be working OK.
You could try giving Jackie a ring at Slipway to see if they offer the rudder as a single item.

HI Graham
Many thanks for your reply. I've downloaded a copy of the PDF file and at 100% it show things up quite well.
I'll be going to Ellesmere Port in a couple of weeks so will look around there to get a better insight as to how to make them and how they work.
I'm a bit surprised that there is so little written about Becker rudders for model ship building as they are probably the most efficient ones around.
Kind regards
Mike.

Becker rudders

HI Mike,
I don't have any drawings of a Becker Rudder, but if you try this link:
http://www.billingboats.com/download.html
to the Billing Boat site there is a PDF of the Smit Nederland build and there are some drawing of the Becker rudder used on that model that you might be able to copy.

Becker rudders

Hello all......I wonder If anyone has a drawing of a Becker rudder which shows details of how It works. I need two to fit 45 to 50 mm Kort nozzles for my next project.
I've been through everything I can find on the Internet but so far haven't found what I'm looking for.
It might end up as something I have to build them myself as the off the shelf ones are too expensive and don't look up to much.
If anyone has built these rudders before I'd be most grateful for any help or advice you can offer me.
Many thanks In advance
Kind regards
Mike
