HI Vortex,

I have just received the result of my latest (and last says the wife!) Ebay purchase. Sold as just " vintage model boat", it is a Surfury obviously built straight from the Model Boat plans. Not too bad a shape for an old boat, but has been liberally painted in a black sticky goo of some kind which comes off on your hands but I bet will take some shifting to restore the boat. Was at one time I.C. powered as you can see the exhaust hole on the transom, but was obviously last used electric powered and came with a tiny old motor and some out of the ark elctronics.

Think that I will be using a small brushless set up as electric is kinder to old wooden hulls than I.c. I am looking for 1/12th scale crew , been looking at Tamiya car and bike figures but no luck yet. By chance, I also came across a very clean copy of Model Boats magazine for November 1968 which had a 2 page article introducing the Surfury plan. Best part is the cover which is one of the stunning Laurie Bagley paintings that they used to use , of Surfury at full pelt really riding the waves.

Perhaps it is just old age setting in, but I really find the offshore boats of that era extremely attractive , more so than the curvy fibreglass ones that are used nowadays. I think that Jerome would do quite well if he re introduced hulls of that type for fast electric .

When I get a chance I will try and get some decent pictures of it and include them on here

Looks like a nice model the Graiger hulls are heavy but strong, there was talk that Jerome was going to scale the surfury and cigarette down to use as fast electric scale but Ive not spoke to him for a few months.
Re crew members Ive had the same problem but look at petes pilots they do a 1/12 scale helmeted head and torso, they look good on surfury Ill post some pics when painted up but waiting for the weather to warm up

HI Vortex,

I think that a 60 would be a bit too much for Mart's hull, probably a 45 would be about best for it. He designed it really for electric power, hence the deck opening is just a little too small ideally for placing an engine. He has said that when he gets round to it, he will redo the deck and hatch moulding to suit an IC installation. I will attempt to attach a couple of photos of mine.
The current setup is a Turnigy T600 1400Kv outrunner motor controlled by a Turnigy 180A ESC and running on a pair of 8400mah lipos, wired in series to give 6s. it drives through a 3/16" stinger and a seperate offset rudder. Not quite scale but it is meant for performance. Still need to find a couple of crew figures and decide on a colour scheme. Awaiting a bit better weather to give it a test run

HI Tiggy cat yes I tracked one down, it was in very good condition too, however Ive seen one on ebay recently which looked as new.
Ive put an Irvine 61 in and am waiting for better weather to arrive before painting it. it is looking good with drivers seated and a little attention to detail.
thanks for info re cigarette, I may have found one which needs a fair bit of work.
I would be interested to hear about it or see it with electric power and what setup you have as id like to run one on a brushless motor but seem to get through speed controllers or blown lipos to often, or else its a meteor 60.

HI Vortex,

did you ever get a Surfury hull ?. they would make a nice couple together.

Kingston Mouldings do a Cigarette hull in 1/12th scale which is fairly close to the shg. Martin Eastwood at Waverider mouldings also does a complete Cigarette, similar hull and his own deck moulding.I have one of these ready for test running fitted with a brushless outrunner.
