HMS HOOD Keel

Interesting to see a model of something like HMS Hood being built in the bread and butter method. I thought it was only used in smallish yachts. I remember making one when I was about twelve. My grandfather cut out the various layers for me and I smoothed off the outside and fixed the deck. I wonder what happened to that model?

Cheers, Nerys
When the winds before the rain, soon you may make sail again, but when the rain's before the wind, tops'l sheets and halyards mind

The good part is you can take your time and study the build until you feel comfortable to start.

Hi Alan,
If the plans for this model are drawn for bread and butter construction there will not be any position marked for individual vertical bulkheads.
Also there will not be much in the way of instructions.

Have you made a model boat hull using the bread and butter construction technique before ?

There are some good videos on utube that will show the bread and butter technique.

If it looks right it probably is.

Building from plans can be very demanding but also gratifying. I would suggest go on line and search for build logs of the Hood and keep reading the plans until you get a better idea were to start. The best I can say is to cut out all the frames and mount them on a building board that will give you a start.Good luck.

The plans are from sarik hobbies there is no scale on the plans but the finished model is 54 inches and the diagram for ribs has no cut out for the keel and the plans tell me to use 1/4 marine on the bottom if I do that the ribs will sit on top and when I plank up I will a lot of filling or sanding to do I have tried to get another plan from America as it shows the ribs cut out for the keel and you get instructions that tell you how to the ones I have got from sarik hobbies you get no instructions and for £16 you would at least get some can you help

Kind regards Alan

Hi Alan.
What plans do you have.
Are you scratch building or do you have a set of parts.
If you can post some pictures of what you have that would help .
I have built Hood in 1/128 scale and if you look at my latest blog I am undergoing a major refit on HMS Repulse at this time.
Happy to help if you can supply more info.
Regards Bill.
Never give up.It will come right in the end.
