Nerys, I jst got the Cambric through the post and it's lovely stuff. I gave it to the Mrs. and said, "Get a feel for it dear". I got a look! But it's no good her telling me she was chargehand machinist at a naughty knicker factory if she can't knock up a few sails! And I know she can as she made me a beautiful suit for a large Zulu fishing boat model a few years ago. I just have no idea which way round the fabric should be cut...warp or weft, and which is which?

No worries Martin. Nothing wrong with cambric or egyptian cotton fabric for sails, but I advocate polycotton because it is a nice light fabric, easy to handle and comes in an excellent colour range. Not important if you want traditional white yacht sails, but I'm more into working boats with coloured sails.

Thanks, chaps. I recalled getting a sample of Cambric and have ordered some of that. A massive 90" wide, very reasonable price.

I'll let you know how it shapes up when it arrives. Now to convince the memsahib that she needs a new sewing machine!

i have used 1000 cord Egyptian cotton for this one

I've been using polycotton for my model sailing barges. Gives the impression of being cotton, the traditional sailmaking fabric, and is available in a wide variety of colours. I buy it on Ebay at about £2 a metre.
