Transport System for model boats

Agree with you Doug, they are brilliant...bought one for taking the beach gear from the car to the beach site, but of course (quietly!) other half maybe listening 😮,will use it to transport the larger of my boats to the pond.

Excellent DG,
I will definitely consider this for HMS Cottesmore as at the moment she has a fine layer of dust on her and that will prevent that happening and as I have yet to make a case for her that will solve the two problems.

thanks

Martin.

Yes - you use washers. Just one needed at the rear, because a pop rivet already has a rim. This is a common technique. Pick a light rivet and it won't compress the plastic much. For the handle bolts I use a little 4mm spacer, as the web page shows.

I use these for EeZeBilts, which are typically light - but the biggest one I have carries nearly 20kg, with spare batteries and radio and everything inside. A kid can sit on them - indeed, I have done so on occasions. You use the 4mm thickness, but if you really want to use them as seats you would probably be better off with 6mm. Of course, if you wish you can build a wooden frame inside if you want to carry something really heavy.

What I like is the cost. You can get 5 sheets of 8ftx4ft on ebay for less than £50 - that's £10 per sheet with free delivery. If you go to your nearest stockist (look for 'twinflute') and carry them away they will probably be £5 per sheet. And you can typically get 4 boxes out of a sheet.

The cost of a strap handle and some clasps is minimal (a few quid on ebay), so you are looking at a custom-sized box for a fiver or less. Means that you can box ALL your boats at low cost, and then stack them away under beds or out in the shed. I must have a dozen or so of these piled on top of each other... and they are very light, so you are not carrying any extra weight apart from the boat...

Incidentally, I've standardised on these toggle clips - they seem to work the best... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Case-Box-Stainless-Steel-Spring-Loaded-Toggle-Latch-Catch-Clip-6pcs-Y6U9/323801617239?hash=item4b64149357:g:3S0AAOSwhMJc004r

Hi DG,
I have been reading the EeZeBuilt box build.
The mention of using pop rivets, what stops the rivets from pulling through.?
I would of thought that maybe a washer ether side.
I do like the idea. With a bit of modification I would think it would hold the weight of 10kg.

I bought two of these, they where perfect for my 4 foot fireboat, and 4 foot Huntsman. They are 700 size rc helicpter boxes, and are ideal for storage in the shed, garage etc. They fit in an estate car, and all the extra parafanalia like batteries, tools etc goes in. I was lucky to find these two reduced as they had damage.
I swopped the small useless wheels and added some internal foam

Now, I might be selling one, as the 4 foot fireboat has gone, if I decide to sell one Ill post here first!

We are luckier still at Cold Knap. We have a large concrete parking area right up to the lakeside and the first ten cars can park ten feet away from the water. Late arrivals are not so lucky but even then are only about thirty feet away. Many moons ago, when I was a teenager it was the hire boat station where we could rent a skiff for a row on the lake.

"Fortunately my usual boating lake does have a proper path from the car park to the lakeside "
👍 Lucky guy!
I can take a short cut through the restaurant terrace which is OK, but then I have to plough through the Biergarten gravel 🤔 Narrow tiddly wheels can't hack it!
Must check the watter in our lake tomorrow.
Wouldn't be the first time I trolled round the corner of the restaurant, with a 4 1/2 foot destroyer under my arm, to discover that the lake had been drained for cleaning! Oh woe!

Hi Doug.
Fortunately my usual boating lake does have a proper path from the car park to the lakeside 😁.
Unfortunately at the moment my usual boating lake doesn't have any water in it ☹️.
I'm in agreement about your comment though, but it's a case of 'horses for courses ' almost literally 😉 so this trolley might suit some but not all.
Still gonna get me one 👍

"Lidl are about to sell a wheeled trolley for £17.99, .."
"Suitable for use on robust flooring such as carpet, linoleum, PVC and more"
The "more" is unfortunately not specified.

Hmm! Don't think I'd touch that with a barge pole Rob.
Fine for trundling your boats from the car park to an exhibition hall but to the sailing lake?
If you have a smooth and grit free path right to the edge of the lake I envy you!
My experience of such tiny wheels, I have a similar trolley, on loose surfaces is that they dig in and you end up dragging more than rolling.🤔
That's why I went for the fold up job, depicted below, with extra wide softer wheels.

Hi Hillro
I found a wheeled flight case which was a perfect fit for my RAF Crash Tender, £50 on eBay.
Fits into the back of my estate car and is great for paved/tarmac surfaces and copes well over grass and uneven ground too.
Lidl are about to sell a wheeled trolley for £17.99, looks like it could very useful for transporting boats 👍

Gonna get me one of them 😀

Check the local dump for a golf club trolley - some come with nice big wide wheels - usually cost a couple of quid when brother in law was playing golf - very useful for moving stuff around - takes bad terrain in its stride.

Hi Ian,
I have a folding trolley like that, sort of left over from my demo kit when I was working for Schlumberger in Farnborough😉
Found it was useless on unmade and loose or soft surfaces though.
Wheels are too small and dig in ☹️

Hi Martin I have a similar folding trolley. It is great because it folds quite small and is Ok for one model. It is a challenge though when you have a 120cm plus model on it navigating around people to / from the pond.
So Christmas came and a new platform trolley arrived as per the link. Models still overhang, but in the direction of travel. I tend to have a crate with all the essential bits at the bottom and then, depending on the day a couple of models on their stands lashed on top of the crate. Works very well even over a long grass walk at Model Boat Mayhem this year. Only about 75/80mm thick folded, the wheels tuck up inside the platform

Good idea JB 👍
Thinks ... still have Jessica's old RC Buggy kicking about - Tow Truck maybe!?
Or-
Brushless on each wheel of the trailer,
Gas shocks and adjustable coil springs all round;
Rack and pinion steering,
Oh! And I might need some cooled disc brakes as well😮
The pissobolotoes are endless😁

"...it is ok if the model is in a nice case....."

A case and a stand should be part of the building process, otherwise your model is likely to suffer damage in storage - or damage to the detail when you try to brush the dust off it...

I use Correx - this gives you a light but strong case, completely waterproof and self-coloured, with just a few folds... See http://eezebilt.tk/box1.html

4x4 RC trolley excellent.
I wonder if I could save up enough ice cream and food containers to make one LOL!

I know of a guy who unfortunately is wheelchair bound and he has made an attachment that he clips on to the side of his chair , it also has a small winch so that he can lower his small Tug in to the water and retrieve it.

Transport System for model boats

Hi Hilro,
Funny this should crop up now😉
This is what I bought for this purpose just this week!
Has nice big wide wheels so it should go anywhere😊
Folds up so it doesn't fill the boot (That's Trunk for U guys over the pond!)
Three of my ships are a tic longer than 127cm so I'll make cradle ends to Velcro inside the basket for them. Otherwise all my boats and ships will fit inside with their stands.
Plus "all the gear!; tools, RC and batteries etc.
(Maybe also a bottle of summat and sandwiches!)
Cheers, Doug 😎

Hi peps
Does anybody have any ideas on how to transport a model from the car to the pond side.
Distance is about 100metres so carrying is a big ask.
photos would be useful.
