Hello,
D'you know, I would really like to do that modification to roof as you describe and your pictures show the result well. I would like to know how you took the roof off too. I just might be tempted to add a searchlight and aerial.....
There appear to be serrations down the mast legs and is there a cover over them too (white)?
What arrangement is there for holding the mast upright?
I am using 2 screws in each leg.
Thanks,PeteG.

yep I kept doing exactly same!
On the last refurb, I was told by another member to get the roof off, I really didnt want to do it, but now so glad I did. I now have a working searchlight, 2 cabin lights, nav lights and mast light. The plasticard roof was a doddle to paint, the roof has been made so it comes off now, for access under the bow section where all the light elecs are, and access to make sure it doesnt leak.
The plasticard was formed over a carved frame for the roof, no way could I have done that, and the mast now is capable of folding down like the real one for storage, so no more knocking it off! I was very lucky to have this done for me! 😊
As I kept knocking the aerial off, I used (from a discarded pc base) a small knurled nut, PC cabinets are full of them, very narrow and long, drilled a hole, pressed it in, and now screw the aerial in when in use.

Hello PM, Twice I have accidentally caught the mast and knocked it off the roof!
So, as you suggest I have drilled and fitted 2 small spigots (10ba screrws) to aid a firmer fixing of the brackets on each side before glueing. I couldn't face taking the roof off at this late stage but maybe next time........!
Many Thanks.

Pete without access under the roof, you are very limited to how you can secure the mast, it can only really be glued on. On the next mast it would be good to have small spigots that will go into a couple of small drill holes prior to glueing, at least the mast will then have a fighting chance of staying on.
I would recommend the best way is the way you most likely want to avoid! take the roof off, then you can at least secure all the roof fittings with screws or bolts, maybe turn it into a project to Illuminate the mast, nav lights and cabin, so something good comes from it!
I did similar, and remade the roof with plasticard rather than ply, much easier to work with, and easy to paint, and it is lighter, just a thought! 😊

I have made 2 masts now for Fireboats but I always have the same trouble of securing the mast to the roof of the wheelhouse. Could someone suggest a tried and proven method please, bearing In mind I have no access to underside of this roof.
Thanks.....
