Some years ago I was given a bottle of Marston, Thomson ,Evershed's Brown Label Scotch Whisky. it had been given to a pair of non drinking brothers to celebrate V.E. day. it had never been opened but the level was down a bit in the bottle.Just at bottom of the neck. it puzzled me for a bit as the old boys had never touched alcohol,or tobacco. ( DID NOT look their age ) However when I did taste it the answer hit me.Evaporation . How? The bottle was corked and a rubber "seal cap" was round cork and neck. Years of standing on a window sill in direct sunlight had perished and split the rubber and the cork dried out. This had allowed some of the spirit to escape under the influence (pun not intended ) of the heat of the sun and the porosity of the cork/ . Oh! how did it taste Mellow and smoooooth. Not at all what the cheap whisky it started out as. Trouble is I told my colleagues about it and they got into my room and had sippers.Drank about half of it .Swines. it wasn't a full size bottle to begin with. When I got it home I got my wife, a non whisky drinker , to taste it. She liked it to the extent of her saying that, if all whisky tasted like that she would drink it. Praise indeed . Next day was our wedding anniversary so of course we toasted each other with the remainder and a second dram to finish the bottle .Plus a drop to taste for the 3 boys So you see under a set of odd coincidences whisky can mature in the bottle. Wish I could get more like that. Mmmmmmmmmm👍

Better keeping the memory of the taste on your tongue and in your brain than in a sealed bottle, you could keep it sealed for years, pop your clogs and someone else drinks it. that would be a really good investment. Cheers Marky

All the Exchange sites always have this proviso/caveat on their offers.
Many people treat such bottles as investments. Seems kinda daft to me not to be able to enjoy it if it's supposed to be sooooooooooo good😉

Spoke to the gramps last night ,he told me he paid a tenner for the bottle over forty years ago, just had a wee nip every now and then and only when it became rare and sought after decided to keep what was left of it for a special occasion.

I find it hard to believe that people pay this sort of money for bottles of whiskey or even wines, just to drink them. Makes no sense to me. £12k is sheer madness. Does it make your Pee woth lots of money as well ??😤

One point I would like to make (you may be aware of this) is that the age of a whisky is from the time it is put in the casks till it is bottled. The time in the bottle does NOT affect the age of the whisky.

Wow indeed Marky, I'm jealous as hell! Best price I can found at my local whisky exchange here in Germany is €550 for a , about 440 quid!!!!!!!!!!!!😡

as i said her gramps has had the bottle for years long before the distillery ceased to exist ,but the price of even the cheapest bottle now would be pretty stingy on your wallet ,nice and smooth on the palate though .

WOW !! Just looked this one up,even at the cheapest bottle couldn't afford it. Let alone the £12,000.00, 50 year old one. Anyone out there got a miniture bottle going. 😊😊
