I still wouldn't trust 'em! Too susceptible to damage.
My humble opinion - I think that there are some things best left to the pros, or at least other materials, and the 3d printers kept for more innovative jobs.
Like LCM hulls and V1s and 2s 😉
Or for repetitive deck fittings etc.

Except that you just make the hole a 'cylinder' with a facet count of 6, i.e. hexagonal.

I have been guilty of thinking along conventional lines. There's no need to cut a thread in the prop.
Just design the prop with provision for a nut to be glued into it.

Props are probably best left to the experts and like Doug I use brass props and have found that performance / endurance and economy don't always come cheap.

I'm sure you can fashion a prop and find a way to attach to the propshaft but you will need a very good understanding of prop design to get good results.

Hi Mark, that should work a treat, I still have doubts on if a decent surface finish can be achieved & like Doug said balance could be a problem.
But as they say up north, the proof is in the pudding😂

Just a thought, Wayne and RN. if you printed the prop with and oversized hole then epoxy a brass insert tapped to the right thread would that do both jobs? Especially if the insert was knurled and a slight push fit into the prop????

Hehe, I'm not sure how the plastic would react to a tap, worth a punt I guess.
Always print a smaller hole than req'd & open out with a drill.
Tip for the day, run the drill in reverse, it still cuts & leaves a much nicer finish👍

As for printed props, yes they are doable, I've printed a few but I've not mastered how to print them well yet, I'm struggling with the surface finish, threads that small are a nono though.

Local University runs 3D Studio Max course so not sure if that is what is required but thanks for the suggestion.

T'is the season of night school. Check out your local college of further education to see if they offer any 3D printing courses.

I guess 3D printing is going to be a big part of model making, we already have one club member who has one.
Does anyone have any idea where or how I can find a face to face 3D printing class (not an on-line one). I have tried looking on the web without success, any ideas would be very much appreciated. I live in the North West.🤔

Top prize to Marky, it is indeed a willys jeep, I found a 1/10 scale model on Thingiverse, I'm printing everything at 63% to get 1/16 scale. in comparison to the LCM3 it isn't taking very long to print, dependant on how it turns out I may print a few 😎👍

Looking at the plans it may be possible to use PosteRazor available as a free download from many sources. Just Google and choose a source you trust to download.
It is actually a poster printing program and prints on A4 sheets which can be joined together.
I have used this in the past to enlarge line drawings to the required scale to produce the formers.
Won't be 100% scale but may be sufficient for your purpose.
A fellow club member made Pickle from a 2" square set of line drawings.

Like Delboy says, absolutely anything is feasible, my print volume in mm LWH is 220 x 220 x 240, I printed a 1/16 scale LCM3 landing craft, its in about 30 pieces that were all glued together, it took approx 6 weeks to print with the printer running 12+ hours per day...
Take a look at this video of a printed ship, this guy doesn't mess around!

Everything is feasible. You have to realise the constraints of the system though. My printer has a maximum build volume of around 200x200x200 mm which is generous in the home printer category. Many are much smaller.
So, to get a model of any size, you might have to cut it into blocks which are glued together after printing.

If you don't have access to a 3D printer, it might be worth your while checking whether their is a local Maker space you can join. They will almost certainly have a 3D printer you can borrow and are likely to also have laser cutting, metal turning and milling, and a host of other facilities normally outside the pocket of the average modeller.

Ok I've cheated, the 110mm diameter soil tube in the middle fits the bill perfectly, I'll take it into work tomorrow & get the ends squared up & shortened by 20mm.

It shouldn't take very long at all for someone who knows their way around CAD to convert a line drg to a model. Get the model as a .STL file & away you go👍
