Oil Sump for Gearbox?

Hi inkoust
I think we have already discounted an oil bath.
Sorry but grease should never be used in any gearbox unless it is completely enclosed as any dirt or grit that gets into the grease will destroy both the bearings and gears.
A light oiling before each sail will provide all the lubrication required.

I agree light oil would be good. if you can make a cover it will not only keep grit out, it will also reduce the noise.
Happy sailing.

Oil Sump for Gearbox?

Are you sure it's aluminium and brass? Those two hate each other, especially when even slightly wet. But I have one of those little jobs and the silver coloured bit is tinplate, but as Dave says a good but careful light oiling at each sailing will be ample.

Oil Sump for Gearbox?

Looks to be well made. I would ask Maritime as they may have experience of using the unit. it rather looks like the gears are carried on brass/Bronze shafts with similar bearings mounted in the ali side plates.
Whatever you use you will need to keep any grit etc out of the mechanism. A simple removable plasticard cover would help.
A spot of light machine oil (not 3-in-one) on each bearing before each sail would be my guess. Sewing machine and model train shops sell light oils.
But do ask the supplier.

Oil Sump for Gearbox?

Evening Dave,

I've attached three images, no instructions on oiling were in the instructions, I could ask the supplier (Maritime Models) he's been very helpful and quick to respond to other questions I've had.

Looking at the box again I could create something that would hold (and hopefully) contain a small amount of Gear box oil.

Best regards

Oil Sump for Gearbox?

Hi dave
did the unit come with any instructions re lubrication? Can you post a pic? My home made gear boxes all ran with a light oiling on each sail.

Oil Sump for Gearbox?

Hello all,

in the pursuit of trying something to make my ship sail at a more realistic speed I've purchased a 3:1 gear box. This came in the post yesterday and its size is perfect for the slender lines of my ship (Build Blog HMS Curzon) I was now wondering if I need to construct an oil sump for this gear box? it's brass and Aluminium construction. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Dave
Best Regards

Dave
