Hi Dave and everyone who gave me advice.
First prop tube fitted successfully. Glue drying overnight ready to fit the second one tomorrow.

I use the bonded rubber type from "model boat bits". Made to suit and vibration dampers. They will also make new shafts s for existing tubes if worn.

Can't actually see the washer between the coupling and the proptube which appears to have a nylon bearing.
It would benefit from a slightly more balanced fit on the motor shaft and propshaft with the coupling having equal gaps at either end. Most motors will move on their bearings in their case when running and it is important to make sure that the prop assembly does not exert any force on the motor. That's the function of the thrust bearings. Correctly fitted there should be a small gap between the prop tube and the washer. Rixla cigarete paper was popular as a guide to set the gap in the days of IC and is still a good indicator.

Thank you. Now I know what to do, I feel a right idiot not to have worked it out for myself!
The couplings I am using are the universal type, which are held in place with Allen screws, as neither shaft is threaded. There is a lock nut and washer on the prop shaft.
When finally fitted in the boat it will look like the attached pic. Does that look ok to you?

I believe you should have selected the jigs to match the length of your chosen coupling. Once you glue the shaft in place and the adhesive has hardened you disconnect the shaft and motor from your jig and rebuild with your chosen coupling.
Do make sure you include a lock nut and thrust washer between the coupling and shaft. There should be a similar washer and lock nut at the prop end.

what kind of coupling are you intending to use? if its a universal joint type

then find a tube with an ID to match the OD of your coupling that way you can lock the coupling and use it to line up your shaft for fitting and have the perfect distance twixt motor and shaft

Propshaft Alignment

To get the best possible propshaft alignment with the least possible hassle, I have invested in a 'Protorlign'.
This consists of various lengths and diameters of brass 'jigs' and once the appropriate ones have been fitted to motor and prop shaft, a rigid and accurate alignment is achieved. (See pic).
The question is, what do I do now?
If I glue the shaft in place with the Protorlign attached it will be too far from the motor for the coupling and if I remove the Protorlign before I glue anything in place then I loose the alignment.
Can someone please tell me I am missing something quite simple?
