if your used to throttle left rudder right then your original post is correct use aileron for your rudder.

Since your building the model for your own use anything you decide is fine!

Hi Chris, follow Daves suggestion, also with your TX mixer, if you dont need it on this model switch it off, follow the instruction manual. With modern computer transmitters most things can be achieved within the TX, on my Yorkshireman, I have left and right sticks (vertical) for the motors and left horizontal for the bow thruster and right stick for the rudders, any extra features (lights, pumps etc) are on the switches.

Hi Chris
As you are discovering radio gear is predominantly made for the fly boys. The controls are named to help put the correct controls for MODE1 or MODE2.
Model boats don't need to follow such criteria and you can use which ever stick you choose to control your throttle and rudder.
Personally I use the left vertical stick for the throttle and the right horizontal stick for the rudder. Some models require two throttles and I then use the right vertical stick also.
I used to fly model planes so perhaps my skills are more attuned to using four sticks but practice will make you more competent should the need arise.
My RMS Olympic has three props so I use the left horizontal stick for the third centre prop. I have difficulty remembering which side is fwd however.
