PAINT ! how do you...........

have now tried out the Langlow safe stripper AND fairy power spray on my graupner lifeboat. Ive attatched some pics to show the results.

I firstly applied the safe stripper to get in to the heavy 4 layers of paint some "person" had applied in a former life.

the to finish off I used the fairy power spray to get in to the nooks and crannies and just finish off the thick blobs of paint the safe stripper hadn't touched.

the only down side to the safe stripper is it does "tint" the plastic slightly green, but hey, Im going to repaint anyway, so no real problem.

But at least all the crappy paint is now off!!

thanks for all the advise and suggestions guys, it was appreciated and hope that perhaps the advise here, plus before and after pics helps someone else too.
Best wishes.

Sounds like a good, inexpensive if messy way to do the job 😊

Purchased a spray bottle of "Fairy Power spray" and tested it out on a test item. have to admit that YES it does remove old enamel paint quite easily, but leave it to work for a good 10 - 15 minutes, dont expect instant miracles and be advised, it only removes paint single layer at a time. if you wish to remove deeper coats, then reapply once you have lightly scrubbed the blistered upper coats off fully.

Please remember to wear protective gloves, dont let this stuff even splash on your clothes as you end up with little white spots where the "bleach effect" takes place! Also watch it does not splash in your face or eyes, so if poss, wear safety goggles as this stuff may cause serious eye damage, basically, "read the warning label" as with any cleaning agent.
Best wishes.

Another link below, the only thing we've found it's no good on is the clear Lexan type shells (but not much is! Nitro fuel works sometimes but is a bit risky) I guess it's like most other things, hunting round to find what suits best. I've not tried it on wood yet but will do soon, got an old Aerokits Fast patrol boat that's got thicker paint than wood!

PS Some of my boats are in my Tamiya showroom under the same member name 'thelegos'

Myself and a number of Tamiya Club members have been using this for a while on ABS 1/10 RC car bodies without any problems. Take a look at this link www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=89951

Ive just checked the web site for this "safe stripper", but in its description it only suggests being safe on "gel coat and glass fibre", nothing about being safe on abs/plastics?
Best wishes.

I've used Langlow Safer Stripper, it's water soluble and sold by many marinas for use on full size boats, it virtually odourless and does not burn the skin. Unless paint is really thick it will start stripping in under an hour.

There are several chemical methods to remove paint from plastic, some are listed here

For smaller items I use "Modelstrip" which is widely available.
I have seen good results from people who use (believe it or not) "Fairy Power Spray" for larger surfaces though I've never tried it myself, see link below

Might be worth a try?

yes I read the post , a sharp scraper is the way I would go, a mouse sander would do more damage than good, when you have got as much of as you can use some 250 wet and dry wet with some soap to stop it cloging

HI Peter,

thanks for reply, but please note, I did say thatthe areas of excess paint were plastic, and not wood as you seem to Impress on.

but I'll continue with the scraper anyway !

Whats the best and easiest way of removing several layers of old, cracking & peeling paint off a boat?

Ive recently purchased [another] second hand boat, a graupner Adolph bermphol lifeboat, but the original builder painted It In correct colours, but the last owner has coated all the vessel with british lifeboat orange! but the problem Is, he didnt key the previous layer properly, so Its all cracking, lifting and just "not looking" nice at all.

But main problem Is being a plastic hull and superstructure, normal paint stripper Is not recommended, as It wil literally melt the plastic!

the paint will chip off using a scraper, but theres a lot of paint to come off and scraping It off Is rather tedious. Im reluctant to use a small "mouse type" sander as Its likely to break through the plastic's gel barrier coat.

Any Ideas or suggestions please.
Best wishes.
