Hi Ron,
I most certainly do remember David, 'Wells Boy', and the Romulus & Ramus saga. With a shudder!
We both went well out of our way to help him and were thanked with vile insults and abuse. A most objectionable character.
Ron, PLEASE do not let recent regrettable events stop you from posting photos and comments about your travels. Otherwise Brightwork will have won, and we don't want that do we. Post them in the 'Hobby chit chat' category, then those who are not interested need not open them.
I believe there are many members, me included😉, who WILL be interested.
Safe journey and KEEP US POSTED👍
All the best, Doug😎
PS Don't forget the single malt tasting, Slàinte mhath😋

Young at heart 😉 Slightly older in other places.😊 Cheers Doug
Ron,
Before the malicious comments and narrow views, I was really enjoying everything on the web site.
You not posting pictures of your trip is regrettable as most of us would have really enjoyed them.
It is a pity that you are not venturing further south, I would have liked to meet you.
Enjoy the rest of your trip
Regards
Ed

I use the forum to link with my fellow model boat enthusiasts from various countries. From this forum I have “met” and formed international friendships. I will not be able to see them in person but we can share common interests in more than just model boats. Sometimes we have been employed in the same careers, or our religious beliefs coincide and we become brothers in Christ.
Since being on this website I have been able to find help with building various projects. Doug, do you remember David and his search for Ramus? We remember when Colin first told us about his son, then his wife’s condition and other problems that he has been dealing with in his life.
Knowing that many of the people who read and write on this website are from the UK and extended regions it seemed like asking for contact of any Scottish model boat builders was in order. Thus, my travel enquires began, I will not be posting photos of our trip unless they are boating related which would be beneficial to the readership. ( only just these two photos are not boats but indicators of being in port)
Most respectfully,
Ron, who is on the road in Scotland or might I say railroads.

Dave, that is the point, diversion from the mission of this site. I am not pointing you out specifically as I don't remember who did the postings. I do remember you have some pretty good posts.
What could sort this out is by having those off/on switches mentioned a number of times.

Lew,
I'm sorry if I am the member you are referring to.
I put them in the "Animals and Nature" section which is in the "non-hobby chat" section, because many of them (although admittedly not all) were scenery/nature pics.
That section seemed to have other similar posts.
If they were unacceptable, I apologize.
I will try to contain myself better in the future.

So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.
ChrisF, I wasn't responding to Ronald's vacation. Not long ago there were a few posts that had a noticeable amount photos of a member's vacation. I see that some members are asking a way for certain types of posts to be switchable (on/off). I had not seen Ronald's post about Scotland. I just searched and viewed it. No issues.

Lew, obviously Ronald will speak for himself but the way I read his post was that he was responding to your "I have no interest in vacation type messages unless it is about model boats. Same for wildlife and scenic pictures. Maybe because I live in a region loaded with wildlife. I would rather see photos of your meets".

Ronald, I don't recall commenting on the "Comming to Scotland" post. In fact, I don't remember even seeing that post.

My apologies then Nick.
Ronald that's a pity as I was going to post on there as we did a lovely 2 week tour of Scotland a few years ago. Bit closer for us of course! Though we are looking at doing a trip to Canada.
Hope the weather is kind as its been lovely until recently and it's taken a turn now. I and many others I'm sure would like to see a thread on your visit.

The only reason I put in a “ Coming to Scotland” post was to get a connection with someone there. Was established, I removed the post.
I am now going to meet people who sail in the Dundee Model Boat Club which has been a club for 148 years, though I doubt they would still be sailing 148 years old models!

They have dropped off now and hopefully that continues. And they weren't popular looking at the number of responses to the questions! Get your facts right before dismissing other members views.

I think you are exaggerating, there's not that many. It also proves qod is popular amongst the membership. Anyway, We will have to agree to disagree, I will not waste any more time on this nonsense...

It's not notifications, I have those turned off. It's when I enter the site and Trending Topics and Forum etc. are pretty much full with QOD etc.
And if I it was only a few it wouldn't be a problem!
As I said it hasn't been a problem before.
It's OK saying not to look Nick, but the problem that has arisen for me and I don't think I'm alone (Brightwork excepted), is that visiting the site I was being met with a barrage of posts I wasn't interested in and had to scroll through a lot to get past them, sometimes onto another page. The impression being that the forum had been taken over. I've always enjoyed this forum, my favourite model boats forum in fact but, with it being taken over by QOD (that wasn't well done and attracted attention from very few) and other non- model-topics then visits to the site are less enjoyable now.
As I said elsewhere I don't have a problem with non-model boats posts and that includes nature and travel etc. but they have to be in moderation and not be at the expense of the main reason for the site.
Unlike some I don't even mind if threads go off at a bit of a tangent and a bit of a chat ensues, isn't that what friends do? Even if not face to face.
One answer, like other forums is to have Chat sub-sections etc. but it's worked well enough for the nine years I've been a member here.

Most eloquently put Lew, you got your points across without disrespecting other members! I agree with what you say, I've said it repeatedly, if you are not interested, don't look. Forums, whether model boats, aeroplanes, mountaineering, lawnmower greasing, toenail cutting etc al are all things to all men. Some join for information, some to share their work, some folk just need a bit of companionship centered around a particular hobby. Threads will wander "off topic", one thing leads to another, anecdotes creep in all the while sticking with the theme of the thread subject. I hope that makes sense, I have just woken up and can barely see. Nice strong cuppa is required!

The issue with the forum is not being able to turn off specific "Categories" (chit chat, etc.).
However I did see that one can turn off "Puzzles of the Day" but I don't know how anyone can post to it. (I have it turned off.) There is also something called "The Games Chest" which I am not sure what that is as well.
I could see that this might be a good place to put "Subjects" that some/many are not interested in. Perhaps rename it "Trivia and non-model boat posts".
Would that make everyone happy?

This is all very sensible and as you say “if you don’t like a subject, turn it off”
The only thing that I don’t like is disrespect of other members.
More people should follow Lew’s advice
I created this new subject to be about forum usage and get away from criticism of any individuals subjects on a thread the started. Keep in mind these are my personal opinions and not those of this site's creator.
Notice that one of the categories is "non-hobby chit chat". In your personal setup under "Account Notifications" you can turn off various notifications. I have the Puzzle notifications (and most others) turned off as I am not interested in these postings which includes trivia.
Best posts are models boat questions and answers. This includes a number of areas such as construction, operations, etc. Getting to know my peers is helpful in both giving and getting emotional support. I know how it feels to be frustrated and a few words of encouragement goes a long way. I try to reciprocate when possible. Also, I find photos of workshops, special tools, etc., which helps develop personal relationships, especially being we are located geographically apart.
I have no interest in vacation type messages unless it is about model boats. Same for wildlife and scenic pictures. Maybe because I live in a region loaded with wildlife. I would rather see photos of your meets.
How about full size ships? Nope, unless photos are needed to assist someone building a scale model of a particular ship.
Repeated posts. [Ugh!] Some members like to post loads of photos, sometimes with the same parts viewed at a different angle. Others post every little piece the put in place. (Here is a block. Here is the block cemented in place. Here is a widget cemented to the block.
Here is a good one: When answering questions, usually technical, don't cut and paste long answers from the internet. Most of us can look it up ourselves. Best to give us a link or two. I know I am not interested in how smart one is with those absurd lengthy answers. The best answers seem to be the ones based on personal experience.
And for some recomendations... I like to take photos close up be it while under construction, on a table, or in the water. No one is interested in a photo or video that is 90% water and 10% boat. This applies especially to videos. Five minutes of a boat zooming around the pond with the boat far from the camera is pretty boring. Add to that many don't even go in reverse, just around and around.
To sum it up, get to the point, show details and be creative thus making it interesting.
