Models being built

Hi Duncan, don't worry, modeling is a pleasure and fun, you do it when all the other most important things are in place.

Your model looks great. I Managed to post a shorter version of the Gopro film clip of my model yacht sailing but so far haven't had any comments so I wonder if it made it onto the site?
Cheers and keep up the good work.

Mturpin013 - It's not only on this site but across all really. I first got into the hobby about 7 years ago and all the forums I frequented were busy with builds and other posts.

Since then, apart from during Covid, there has been a steady decline. On Mahem during Covid for my main area of interest, namely Faireys, there was quite a number of builds being undertaken but soon after and now there are none. Ok, Mahem on Facebook has one now and then but they are not conducive to build blogs due to their fragmented nature. Facebook forums are Ok for showing your model or obtaining an answer to a question but not for reference.

As has been mentioned before the reduction in forum activity and model building has been due to members dying and not being replaced but forum activity has also been affected by all the aforementioned Facebook groups.

For my part my model building has been affected by my mother suffering a stroke and dying 12 months ago and also by one of my sons buying a flat and me spending a large part of the last 9 months working on it - still a bit to do but he's moving in this weekend. As said, family come first.

As per my recent Build Blog all my builds so far have been Faireys and they are detailed on the Model Boats Magazine forum but my intention is to post my 2 new Fairey builds and my modified Stiletto/Rapier water-jet project on here as well as completing my on going Fairey builds.

The daily quiz seems to have taken priority over build blogs! I'm still building my Bruma motor sailor and will update my blog when some more progress has been made. The original plan was for it to be ready for the Blackpool Model Show but unfortunately other priorities got in the way! One of which was my wife falling in the house and breaking two vertebrate in three places. So everything has fallen on myself to do! 😊

Or is it "NOT" being built.

What has happened to all the build blogs that used to appear in the section headed "Build Blogs", all we seem to get are a few "during" the build and then the maiden voyage.
There were a lot of builders and just readers who relied on the assistance of detailed - (in text and picture) blogs.
It made this site so much more interesting.
I appreciate it takes a lot of time to produce a detailed blog but I'm sure it will be appreciated.
I just need to finish my Inga IV blog then there's an interesting steam project on
the horizon. So please put pen and pictures together to produce some interesting blogs, and don't forget to give some credit to the author's by making comment and suggestions rather than the easy option of a "like"

I have a copy of the Model Boats article and plans for Wild Duck stashed away. Forgot to include her in my”Before I Die” post. So I will follow with interest.

I got a kit for the large Lobster Smack before that firm had sold most of its kits to Midwest. Got the keel and frames built up and was going to put in the sail control before I put on the hull sides, when I found that I too had lost the plan. Has happened more than once, as before I can find space or time to build, I usually pull out the plans to drool over. The frame has stayed with me for many moves, but now it is mostly a space issue. Anyway, glad to know I am not the only one. 😊

I like your approach to building Wild Duck.
We learn a lot from experimenting with our builds, especially when dealing with lead and wood. These materials do not always behave as expected, so success is far more satisfying than when following instructions. 😉

I'm just putting the finishing touches on my Aeronaut Jonny. I have a few more kits on the shelf but I think I'll take a bit of a break from building

My current build is all plastic and is a kit bashing project. Creating the 1956 version of the Atlantic Oceanographic Group. CNAV Sackville 113

I have been on Google and digging through the archives, slow tedious process but every once in awhile I find something interesting and useful. Building mostly from photos.

We all seem to mention our builds in odd corners of the web site. I find all members builds interesting and many including me are often in need of advice.
I have a Wild Duck on the stocks, it is enjoyable as it is not easy.

I bought the Sarik laser cut wood pack as my starter and was very happy with it.
However a friend bought the same pack in fact 3 of them, the price had gone up and some parts were not supplied and was met with indifference when he complained.

So that is 3 less WD's being built!
My lessons learned were not to use B&Q 6mm square spruce for this job it is too strong! It steams OK but takes up the bends determined by the wood grain and I had to beat it into submission. Apart from that and somewhat limited time now as anno domini creeps on.

I find I am still buying boats to build! Current plans are to complete WD and also complete a model too long on the stocks, an obscure Polish kit caled Teltech for Lilka which is a Pilot/custom launch based in Gdansk. The hold up on that I I have lost the full size plans! Although reduced versions are on the internet when blown up they are a but blurred. If anyone out there has these plans I would appreciated being able to copy them.

Bruma is hovering there with the Aero naut kit Victoria and then I went and bought another kit! This one is a similar model to Bruma called Trotamares by Mantua.

By the way any one wanting a cheap unstarted Bruma kit PM me, no it is not my one!

So, waiting for the right moment to immerse myself in boat building.

Anyone wanting to post on this thread about any on going builds are welcome.

The pilot boat is Lilka.

The in wood yacht is Wild Duck. I have changed the long keel for a small extension of the hull keel and fitted in 2 lbs. of lead. The lead is several thicknesses of roofing lead (pre-used) and hammered together.
There was some epoxy glue in between to keep it stable and then the lead was glued in place and when dry, filler was used to fill in the gaps etc. Then a fibre glass cloth was wrapped around it to keep it in place.
