Great model!

I remembers kits with those motors, they are a little small. Kits said "motorized", "electric motor included" they were optimistic about performance.

Good Morning Roy! I pulled this little guy out of the box. It's a Mabuchi RE-36 and is quite small...for such a big boat imho. When I get around to building this old gal I will retro fit her with a more modern set-up.
Btw: sent you a message.😉

Hi Jump, looking at the kit a model which I very much like, what is the blue motor on the kit box cover?

Looks like a Mabuchi, which one? I collect motors and have several of the blue coloured Mabuchi motors.
I thought it might be a 705 or similar number.
I have a new one of those in a nice box.

cheers for now
Roy

Tx Jump. Tower looks great. I’ve not done one on either of my two SF’s. Always been hesitant because of potential damage during transport.
Once on a real 47’ SF I got stuck in the tower when the seas kicked up preventing a return to the cockpit.

Here ya' go Chum. It's an ancient (1965) 30 inch Lindberg 40' ("motorized") Sport Fisherman that I restored and kit bashed the marlin bridge years back. I put mahogany veneer all over it detailed it for fun. It's really a great kit with some super engineering: a high-water mark for Lindberg, but sadly the original hull mold was destroyed at the factory (still a mystery how) and the remaining molds may have gone into the garbage as well!!! It can still be had online (at rip-off prices up to $800!), but the plastic (other than the hull) is of a poor quality and is very brittle now. I picked one up that was almost lost in the Hurricane Sandy flood years back at a legendary professional model builder's shop in Brooklyn, NY and it's still in my stash. He had over a thousand kits and was a renowned commission builder. Many precious kits were lost, but a few hobby shops in the Tri-State area resurrected what they could and I was lucky to pick up the Lindberg kit.

Hi Mike: My "Big MOE" stands for my kids Max, Olivia, and Emily!😊😉
The Hawaii Kai was a fave of mine when I was a kid, mostly because we lived in Hawaii for 3 years while my Dad was in Vietnam.

Hey Jumpugly,
Then name the boat with your daughter's name.
All my boats have names of my children and grandchildren.
So the passing on is clear . . .

Truth be told Commodore, she’s partial to shovel nose hydroplanes! She wants to make sure that my old Dumas Hawaii Kai is willed to her when I’m gone!!! 😅

I don’t have a daughter but I understand your feelings

However before you start construction you might show your daughter some other boats for consideration, how about a Fountain or Cigarette, maybe a nice white Chris craft or a Riva

Hi, chumm and et al, my thoughts are still the same, however, daughters are rather special!
If my daughter wanted a particular model boat, I would just ask "How big"?

Good luck with whatever happens but I will keep building as before!

Jump. If doing a build of it has appeal to you and/or your daughter, go for it; especially for her. As the builder you’re the only one who needs to be pleased. Other folks with dissenting thoughts should keep their opinions to themselves.

Honestly, as I jump back in I think it’s still worth a look at the plans to see if it would make a good project. Photos of it planing with bow up are pretty cool. Although I think the black hull is a bit of a problem. One man’s treasure… you know the drill. 😉

Don’t know if it’s that most of us are older…I think pleasing lines are pleasing lines, whether the object is new or old. Take Tesla for example. The Model S has pleasing lines, it’s a decent example of a good looking modern car. But….then they go from designing a car that uses electricity for power and has a fair amount of tech, to that monstrosity they call a “truck”. I firmly believe that it was designed to show off their tech, and for no other reason. It’s is, as we say in Texas, “hit by the ugly stick” . A lot.
Some designers can take the best of the past and present, and see a little into the future and come up with, graceful, beautiful things. Many designers today, just don’t care. They want to attract the money, and the way to do that now is shock and awe, no matter how Godawful ugly their design is.
Just my 2 cents, your mileage may vary, etc…🤣

Original post photo was a SFU (Some Expletive Ugly) boat IMHO. That said, different folks see pleasing lines differently. One of our harbors has several boats with a bubble porthole just above the waterline. Makes for a nice view of the water flooding your boat when it takes a heavy beam wave in tough weather. Then again I’m guessing these boats are nailed to the dock for the season.

I agree with Roy, Jumpugly and the others that these style boats hit a new level of ugly. Also look at the hideous thing from Tesla. Len

Hi everyone, I have to admit that I also don't like the shape of this boat at all. I've seen better.

But Roy is right, perhaps we are tied to the lines of the past.
Speaking only of pleasure boats and motorboats (which in any case are not my favorites on an aesthetic level, I prefer fishing boats for example) in these days they are demolishing a historic motorboat: the Destriero.
Compared to those today it is a completely different thing. Look at this one for example (last link) it is super technological and uses foils but it is certainly not the best in terms of beauty, at least in my opinion.

Well done Dave (DWBrinkman).

I’m with Roy and I agree with Flaxybuck; the folks on the boat definitely needed to get over themselves.😁 Plus a big shout out to DW for the successful google search!!!

It is typical of the trend to really ugly boats, especially power boats. On my visits to Oz and by the sea there are many to see.
The design looks like they are a basic boat which can be expanded or contracted on the computer to suit the buyer.

It is probably my age, but the boats that attract attention are the traditional design ones. For me the modern designs look like kids cheap toys. Sad but a visit to some of the large marinas reveals many that look surprisingly the same.

Many leisure craft in marinas are corporate owned and hardly ever travel far. Just look at waterline and see the line of grime and green algae.

Probably just me!

A quick Google search found this ....

So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

My daughter’s “spy boat.”

My oldest daughter was on a harbor cruise here in Greenwich Connecticut last night and saw this monstrosity cruising about. I saw it come in and dock, but couldn’t get close enough to identify it. However, I reckoned her to be about 60’ and the beam was easily 15’, as a bunch of well-heeled “bros” disembarked into the Indian Harbor Yacht Club for some liquid refreshments. My daughter called it a “spy boat.” Trying to identify it…might make an interesting project someday. 😉
