Hi, the 'odd' servo?
I really cant remember why this was installed (its not there now).
The photo was taken during construction (about 7 years ago).
I think the original plan was to separately control the jib sail or possibly to animate the figure (Capt Jack Sparrow).
The winch is spring loaded to keep it under tension, this is running inside the tube you can see in pic.
Other changes not in the original pics include installing a gearbox on the motor to step it down.
Photos as it is now attached

Hi Isaac, I thought all the sails were controlled by a single closed loop winch.
I figured it was an old location.
It could be used for other purposes, sit there inert, or be removed, only Mike knows.

She's a lovely looking vessel, and you have made a really good job of her. I love the look of her on the water. You must be very proud ! 😉

My guess that the original mast/sail configuration was that the "Berry" design was based on similar designs of the period. As for restoration back to the original design, I've seen that done on other old ships, buildings, etc, for historical purposes which appropriate in many cases.

Probably someone got hit by that enormous boom! 😂
A twin mast would have smaller sails - much easier to handle the canvas I would think and possibly better balanced.

I wonder why they added a second mast and sails to the original boat? And why restore it to original configuration ( as I saw the real ship back in 2019 )?

your question :
Hi Mike, congratulations on your ship model.
What is the servomechanism/winch in the center (Futaba s300) for?

looks like the control for the forward sail ( there is a spool next to that servo ( arm is not shown ) .

Thanks for the complementary comments.
Yes she sails really well without the aid of the motor (I prefer to sail like this). I've never tried her in heavy winds (and won't be doing).
Don't know how much ballast there is (weight) but there is plenty - lead shot and resin. Put into place by sliding down a tube.
I sent the plans to someone in USA through this forum abut 5/6 years ago.
Some additional photos - the video would be too long if I included everything. Will do another video soon and put a camera on the boat - will update when done.
Decking made from Greggs coffee stirrers and black wool for the caulking. Had to replace the original sail material as gone mouldy.
I got lots of tips from reading this website so thanks to you.

Lew! I hear you loud and clear! Just started my stashed, all original Sterling King Fish up at the lake. Thankfully, I was gifted to me over 20 years ago from a friend who grabbed it at a AMVETS thrift store in Cheektowaga, NY thinking I might put it to good use. Bless him! And it survived my terrible house fire. The box is still covered with soot!

The joy for me with this one will be letting it free sail, albeit letting my neighbors know that it’s mine when it ends up on their dock or shoreline. The lake is 2 miles long and a quarter mile wide. Should be interesting to say the least.

But, getting back to my friend’s thoughtful nature…it compares beautifully with your thoughts.

👍😊

For those interested.

I visited the Mystic port in Connecticut back in 2019. Among the many boat pictures I took, here is one of the Emma C Berry

Lots of interesting boats and memorabilia there.

Enjoy😎

Jump... sometimes things happen! People get rid of things that have been laying around for a while, no longer need, or a relative passed on. I'm kind of in a lucky position and get these for free now and then.

Recently I got a partially built model of the "America" (of America's cup fame), the Sterling model that was very similar to the "Berry". Passed it on to another member. Got a Graupner Wiesel complete kit - also free. Tried to sell it locally but only got $100 for it. If you can find one they usually run about $400 (US).

Over the past two years I got approximately 30 kits (a few really good ones) and builds plus numerous tools, materials, and accessories. In the future I will start posting the better ones on Model-Boats.com - overseas shipping might be too much but perhaps those in N.A. might be interested.

I saw the real Emma C. Berry (launched in 1866) about 65 years ago at the Mystic Seaport museum. She looks different now having been re-rigged back to her original single mast configuration. Still there !!!

Thus is what gave me the incentive of buying and building this model. 👍 to all that has done likewise.

You can read more about the history of the "Berry" below (left).

You can also see Mike Sriver's "Berry" (in 1975) also below (right).

Hello Mike, your schooner sails very well, congratulations.
Were you able to make complete turns and gybes even without a propeller, just under sail?

Looks great and seems to sail without the need of an additional false keel.
I’d be interested in what ballast you added.

Great build, and very good sailing!
Do you have removable keel weight for sailing?
She did not seem to heel over too badly .
Great working model.

Beautiful build Mike of a true classic kit by Sterling! Having lost mine in a house fire many years ago, I wish another manufacturer would go to the trouble of getting these patterns and re-market this kit as they go for a pretty penny these days if you can even find one! I bet you have about 3 pounds of ballast in that beauty. Great to see her on the water, well done!!!

Very nice work! I built mine (Sterling) over 50 years ago and the only water it saw was in a reflecting pool in a mall soon after during a hobby show. HAPPY SAILING.

What a delightful model! Excellent build video, and doesn't she sail well?

Good that you didn't add a keel and she sails "as intended", I think this was the right decision. Definitely one to be very proud of.
