Ha ha thanks!
This is a nice video. The sounds are on the boat tracks taken from the jaws film so actual real music and dialogue. It's operated from a trigger switch via transmitter, and the smoke unit now also comes out of the engine hatch

I made my own smoker, spent ages trying to create black smoke, carbon, diesel oils, and so on, even bIts of rubber!

rubbish quality video but gives you the idea, its wire from a hairdryer wrapped around a piece of dowel covered with some roof insulation soaked in oil in a metal box, with a small pc fan to blow the smoke out, juts need to remember to fill up the oil via the exhaust stack every 15 m ins or so or the hull will get hot and then you do get black smoke. !

Atomizers if using dyed water would the vapour give the coloured effect? Lipos in boats or any electrical connection, is best positioned in a raised position away from any water trail, say water gets in through an hole, gap, crack, shaft it will ultimately settle in the lowest point it can get to, so you can have a fair amount of water slopping around in the boat before you have submerged electrics I don't like getting any water in my boats! But guess what it often has a presence in them, so far the only time I had an issue was when I sailed a yacht which had a 3" crack in the gunwale I think this happened when the boat caught some wind and fell off it's stand, I didn't see it?? But the only issue was the nimh receiver pack got wet, and the old standard rudder servo cable grommet let water in, once home dryed the battery in warm air flow, stripped the servo and cleaned regressed sealed it after making sure all moisture was gone put it all back together and had no issues at all, typically low powered stuff may show malfunction when wet but turn it off asap! And thoroughly dry it out don't rush it, further damage may occur if you persistently power things up before they are moisture free! Higher voltage may cause more issues but 4.8 To 7.4 v isn't too bad, but say system like 6-8s pulling big amps, through expensive electrics may be a different issue but a little dampness is not a big issue you just have to sort it out.

Lew, for connectors, I use XT30/XT60 on my RC aircraft, they seem better when it comes to separating the two halves. As for LIPO, well again I only use them for my aircraft and todays chargers are very good but they are not cheap to buy. You can also buy/create a flame proof charging box. I am going to use my LIPO's in my new boat this year (I have them so I will use them) but the only thing that is bothering me is a short circuit due to water? Going to do some thinking on that one.

Years ago I wanted to build an ironclad (US Civil War) but could not find a decent way. I got some small coal used for the small RR steamers but that would require a good size hot box. I also tried incense but it burned too slow requiring many burning at the same time. Even looked at "stage smoke".

I hope someone can come up with a decent non toxic black smoke.

Hi Graham
found a bit more on our smoker experiments in the forum pages for people to look at
LATEST SMOKER EXPERIMENTS, REDUCING SIZE & NEW BITS (copy and paste in forum search)
also search search under 'smoke' in forum, then look under 'latest smoker e-cig element' for more,- scroll down.

JBkiwi and I did quite a bit of development on smokers using vapes 3-4 years ago. No dark smoke though! Try searching the blogs and Media Gallery. Unfortunately many of the videos have been deleted from the site but I found one here:

Lew, trying to achieve darker smoke seems to be the holy grail of all that use smokers. Hopefully someone has come up with a safe solution. Len

You can get deep black smoke with light oil I've made a couple of scale smokers from vape parts I've even made my own coils to choose my voltage coupled to a timer circuit board doing a sequence of on off on you program how many seconds you want each phase to work, so I set 2secs on 4secs off 2secs on gave me a two puff smoke effect, they issue was a vape coil has a set voltage so can burn out easily so i made my own coils from nichrome wire, but it feels odd to me putting an heat source (fire) in the boat so I use atomizers instead no heat at all, just shakes the water in to mist if I get chance I'll post some pics or a video showing pros and cons, the idea of using vapes gives useful parts silicone rubber ended oil reservoir with flow and vent holes , one system has a micro fan to propel the smoke uses a little bottle to form a ducted fan type chimney also a timed led light illuminates the smoke so its more visible when out on the water

Well Health and safety as for stripping bare, well let your imagination run wild😅but has I said I hate to see folk just wreck the world we crave after things and then we don't even want what we longed for, and show no regard for anything and whilst salvaging a dirty horrible thing that's been in peoples mouths laced with nicotine or cannabis may not be everyone's ideas of fun but I enjoy being odd😅

I know this is s little off for this subject but in Andi1's response he mentioned using a vape for a model boat smoker. Obviously they don't make continuous "smoke" but when the throttle is suddenly increased in many larger diesel engines that also gives a short blast of smoke, only darker.

Soooooo, anyone have any experience with vape "smokers" in MB's? Anyone achieve darker smoke?

Hi Andi,
Re "who remembers the Wombles ?😂 "
I do; The Wombles of Wimbledon Common, BBC in the early seventies.
Motto; 'Make Good use of Bad rubbish'.
But I don't recall them having to wear gloves, a mask AND strip to recycle in the nude!😮🙈

😁😁
Happy and safe recycling
Doug😎
PS Hadn't heard of KOKAM so I looked 'em up🤓
They are still around.

Hi your new li-ion batteries are the very common 18650 cells, 18mm diameter 65 mm long and the last 0 indicates they are round, lipo li-ion not a lot of difference in my mind I've used lipos for over 20 yrs all sizes up to 6s 22..2v 6000mah and never have I seen any smoke, in the extremes? If you regularly hammer an high power using model nail the battery to death then Eiger for more fun slap it on charge at an higher 'C' rating( so a 4000mah pack being charged at 8000mah is twice as fast? '2c' why not go for four 'c' imagine the already hot depleted pack, now being super charged even more heat, you can see the idea. You mentioned Temu, cheap battery, the size of the can? The weight of the pack, I have some cheap 18650 7.4 two cell they claim massive high power on the outside of the can but I don't think they have many bean inside? But they are receiver packs I don't use them for drive packs, like you say our boat club is a sail or scale type deal so the odd quicker boat can pop up from time to time. The thing you need to do is respect and love your batteries, don't be greedy rushing and pushing things to the limit, my best lipos are KOKAM 3S 4000MAH I've had four only two left still hold and discharge correctly they were my main helicopter TRex 600e I flew the odd 3d trick but mainly nice balanced smooth flights and as I say I bet not many people remember KOKAM,but they were definitely good.
I am relatively new to li-ion use in RC but the 18650 cell is everywhere in my e-bikes,, in vapes? Worst things ever invented!!! Single use vapes run out of puff, charge and just get dropped on the floor recycling centers are seeing problems with batteries exploding in waste processing machines , I pick them up from outside my house dismantle them recharge the battery I've made scale smokers from them, use gloves, mask strip and clean bits for re use, propper Womble,me who remembers the Wombles ?😂

i agree enterly with your remarks. I have always used lead batteries and as they were at the end of their lifecircle i bought NiMh 6v- 10 000 mA ordered them in Germany made to the customers requirements. As every body i heard to much stories about fires. And i must agree i m not that type of person to check, unload, load etc
May be next order i might switch to Li-on. keep you posted

I am primarily an RC aircraft flyer for over 50 years. The past 20 or so, I switched to electric only. For the past close to 10 years all of my batteries have been LiPo ones. I have done all the way from 1S to 6S of varying capacities in planes, helicopters and drones with not a single event.

My experience with Lipo batteries and also my storage in a fireproof bag have encouraged me to also use them in boats. I operate 5 large boats all on 2S batteries, and now a sixth boat ( the old Torpedo boat ) on 3S due to its large size.

While there are some events out there of fires, I think normal care will reduce the risk greatly ( I am sure much less than the storage of 5 gallon gasoline containers I have in my garage to power the generator during hurricane season ).

My opinion.

Had house fire with Lipos too in 2006 I wasn’t allowed them in house for a long time. A battery manufacturer gave me lion to test A123 batteries bought out by Sony then LG. They are as you stated heavier n diff voltage. With better chargers n taking care I went back to Lipos. Still have Lions around. I don’t do any big battery packs like before tho. 2 n 3 cell 600 mah to 2300 mah. I’m more carful n use a ceramic jar to store them. I’m using dry cells in my sailboats n Nicaea in transmitter. My house burning cost $500,000 in repairs n rebuilding. Did rebuild in 6 months. I still have new nicad pacs around too but they are just in a storage box

Lipo vs Li-ion

For a long time I have been hearing about Lipo batteries. Lipo this, Lipo that, Lipo, etc... I had determined that Lipos were to dangerous for me and not really necessary for my scale model boats where I have little need for speed.

An acquaintance had his house burn down several years ago when his Lipos were charging on his porch. The only thing left was the garage where he stored his model boats. Everything else was a loss. This has been stuck in my mind ever since.

A few months ago I ordered 10 4.4V Li-ion batteries to replace some of my 7.2V aging and dying batteries, Ni-mh, etc. I found some that had the Tamiya connectors on Temu at a good price. After some research it seems the better choice for scale model boats where hi-draw is not an issue, the Li-ion batteries would be a better and safer choice.

The photo shows one of the new Li-ion 7.4V 3500mah and one of my hobby Nimh 7.2v (2500 - 5000mah) batteries for a size comparison.

Not that I a fan of Tamiya connectors that are sometimes troublesome. I have a lot of "Tamiya" connector batteries, chargers and of course the connectors in the boats plus most of my RC 1/16 scale tanks.

I haven't found much info or comments on Li-ion batteries on Model-Boats.com, but a lot on Lipo batteries.

So I ask you, user of Lithium batteries, for some feedback on your experiences on either or both or if you have done any real time comparisons.
