Radio signal ???

Hi Colin.

Perhaps they will take advantage of the hyperlan bands now integrated into all wi-fi modems/routers.
Good to know.

I am amazed by the very long distance that the signal has traveled and remained effective, around 256 metres, which is not a very short distance.
I had heard many cases of gates not working because they were close to more powerful transmissions which "obscured" the reception by saturating the antenna, but never this.

Dear Hermank, I completely agree with you.
Colin has good neighbors but they are also lucky to have Colin.
Think of a bad or spiteful person in his place, he would have enjoyed driving the neighbors crazy by opening and closing the gate without saying anything.

I'm treating you well and I agree with you because your son-in-law is from Sorrento, hahahaha.
Joke.

Radio signal ???

Good job you have a friendly neighbour! It reminds me of an advert that use to be on TV but the trouble was the garage door kept smashing into the bonnet of the car! Lucky this wasn't the case for yourself!

Radio signal ???

Alessandro I was thinking the same 433mhz, but he showed me the instruction booklet. It was only fitted 7 weeks ago and is connected via WiFi so he can operate from his phone or tablet as well as the remotes.
He is waiting for the installer to visit on Friday so they can test the system and recalibrate it.
So hopefully it shouldn't happen again after that .
Still I am interested in learning what has caused the issue.
Cheers Colin.

Radio signal ???

Distance from my bedroom where I was doing my testing is approximately 280ydsto the neighbours garage.
Channel 1 operating left-hand door, Channel 3 operating right hand door.

Radio signal ???

Hi Colin.

I completely agree with the explanation Dgoss999 gave you.
If you had a portable spectrum analyzer (e.g. an R&S FSH8) you could see the peaks of the harmonics rising just as you pressed your remote control. You would see what frequencies your harmonics are at and what power they reach the antenna.

Just a question out of curiosity, are you sure your neighbor's gate receiver is 5.8 GHz?
For me it's an interesting curiosity. In Italy all (or almost all) automatic gates work at frequencies of 433 MHz.

Radio signal ???

Collin good evening
You are very lucky to havé a friendly neigbour! I know people who start fighting and didn’t take an excuse or apologies for an answer. Some people are short…..Is folding aluminium foil around thé ré river of thé garage a solution?

Possibly, a harmonic (Primary or IF frequency) from your old 40Mhz AM Tx in close proximity to the Garage is setting off his door.. In the same way as the old 27Mhz AM CB radios would set off peoples' security lights as you drove past them.

Also it could just be some wild RF selectivity issue on the 5.8 Ghz receiver on the Door Control or where the RF input on the controller is not screened sufficiently to reject the rough output from your Tx and it's sending the door cranky!!

I will assume his garage isn't by the pond you sail in so should only be a brief embarrassment.

Have you tried running the Tx without the Aerial extended to see if there is still an issue. Running the Tx with the aerial down for a short while shouldn't cause any problem to the Tx RF output stage!!
May4th be with you!

Radio signal ???

I was doing some sorting and testing of my various old rc gear and whilst testing an old 40mghz set when I heard a neighbour shouting at his wife. I went to see what he was yelling about. His garage doors kept opening and closing setting his alarm off. He had tried taking the batteries out of the remotes but it was still happening.
I went back home and tried the rc transmitter again and watched as his garage doors were opening and closing.
I had to go and explain his problems were caused by my rc transmitter affecting his doors.
We had a good laugh as he thought his wife or son were messing about.
Now I am wondering what is going on as my 45 year old set is 40 mghz AM but his garage operates on 5.8ghz
We tried 8 different chips and all did the same. So we tried his remotes but it didn't affect my reciever.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers Colin.
