Fitting hull skins
Fitting hull skins
I have built several Aerokit models and all are similar. I am restoring a Sea Queen at present and may do a blog as I progress.
Alan has indicated the correct way to fit the skins. Do make sure your stringers and bulkheads are level and that the skins can lie flat. You need to chamfer the bulkhead to allow for a flush fit. This is a slow process and should not be rushed. I usually use a long straight sanding block to assist with this process. ideally your frames should be firmly attached to a good solid building board to avoid any chance of twists when adding the skins. I usually use 3/8 MDF.
You can soak or steam the skins to make them more pliable and then tack them (unglued) in place until dry. if you have a good fit the glue will have bonded each stringer and former to the ply skins and you will have a strong yet light structure. I have uploaded a couple of pics of My Sea Queen hull plus an Aerokits Crash Tender hull as purchased. You can see that the skins on the latter are not well fitted and need to be redone. if you send me a pm with your email address I will share all the pics I have via Dropbox (free to join and share pics).
Hope this helps 😀

Fitting hull skins
Sand the stringers and the bulkheads so that the bottom skins fit flat on both stringer and bulkhead, glue bottom skins, when dry, trim back to stringer and at the same time sand both stringers and bulkheads so that the side skins sit flat, then trim after glue has dried.
If you have trouble bending the skins at the bow, warm the ply with a hair drier.
Some one my reply with more or better information that has built a Sea Queen
Good luck

Fitting hull skins
Do I have to sand the stringers from bulkhead 1 to 6 to shape so that the skins sit flush on the stringers or do they over lap and the side skins come down to meet them and then are trimmed.
This Is my first go at this and don't want to mess It up.
If any one can help or has pics as to how the bottom skins sit I would be grateful .
