Fairey huntsman restoration

Hi NickD, Sorry for late reply😌
400ml rattle cans from my local Baumarkt (DIY and Builders Hypermarket).
Made by a German company, Peter Kwasny Group - link attached, who also mix perfect matches for auto colours.
Send 'em the paint code from your car registration and you get back an absolute identical with the original. sure there's an equivalent company or several in the UK. Filler primer, white primer and UV blocker clear lacquer from the same company.
Details with pics are in my Sea Scout Blog. Link below. Give the site a few seconds to find it. Or scroll down if it sticks at the newest entry.
Cheers, Doug😎

Going too dark was one of my concerns which is why I went for Sapphire Blue rather than Oxford Blue in the end. Mind you I'm hand painting so probably thicker coats.

When photographed mine looks darker.

Hmm! Looks like it's already tending towards black Wez.
With 6 coats it might be indistinguishable🤔 Midnight on a moonless night?
Still looked a nice blue with 2 coats.

A word to the wise if I may!
Looks like you are getting some light 'orange peeling'.
Which suggests that you are spraying too thick in one pass.
Possibly too close? Stay about 30cm (1 of His Majesty's feet🙊) off the surface.
Or too slow in the pass?
Can also be caused by the paint not being quite mixed in the can or the pressure is dropping.
TIP: Try standing the can in hot water for several minutes before shaking; to raise the pressure and help thin the paint a little more.
Hope this helps!
Cheers, Doug😎
PS DO NOT warm the can in the microwave! 💥
😁😂🤣

Well two coats of Humbrol midnight blue and think I like the colour better than navy blue I got last week will use the navy blue on the boat stand instead of waisting it in the bin

So managed to get two rattle tins of midnight blue Humbrol paint from one of our model shops bit of a drive but glad I went back to see what else they do as most of our model shops up here in Cumbria are just model train related so hopefully get some paint on today

Definitely the way to go with the mahogany Wez. Here's my Swordsman- still got to do along the rear edge of the cabin roof but like you doing the windscreen first.

My model building stopped for three weeks due to getting the dreaded Covid but will be starting again soon.

Hi Wez,
Ref colour-
My personal preference would be Royal Blue, as used on my Sea Scout, see attached pics.
Seems to be more 'alive' than navy or midnight blue and looks great in the sunshine.

I trimmed the joint between deck and cabin with 1/8 square mahogany profile, see pic 2.
The cabin roof I reskinned with 1mm mahogany (which was a pain in the neck to get right🤔)

Thanks Colin yes I’m going to do that with the cabin aswell after I’ve fitted the windscreen all the way round the edge of the top of cabin and just on the inside with two metal grab rails just small and the back and front hatches for doors as well got loads of ideas now off everyone on here

Good morning Wez, looking good and your idea with the mahogany strip will look classy.
Might I suggest the same strip along the joint of deck to cabin.
Only an idea, so don't be offended.
Cheers Colin.

So after a few days off looking after the mrs after her operation and trying to decide on paint colour even tho I already bought 3 tins of navy blue still not sure if I should go with midnight blue having taken all the windows back off and re painting so I could get the top sanded and primed ready for paint I’m still not convinced mavy blue is the way to go so while I make up my mind got two strips of mahogany for the top of the boat we’re the two parts meet just to make it a bit different hope I’m doing this right lol seemed like a good idea at the time before I mask off and paint
