Fairey renovation

Thanks Gary, I tend to be apprehensive about tackling some of the more tricky jobs, like when I was planking the decks on some of my builds, but when it came to it, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, hopefully will be the case with the screen!

Another job in that apprehensive category is making the bow rails. All part of the learning process though.

Hi Chris, if you make a former from a block of wood with regard to your windscreen, it is reasonably straightforward to bend 1/8" perspex, (the good old fashioned type,) using boiling water and a large cloth/towel, to press and hold the perspex onto the former. Then invest in a bit of black edging rubber strip for a nice finishing touch. Regards, Gary.

The screen is one of those tricky jobs I don't fancy doing, along with others along the way that I overcame, but at least it will be one of the last jobs that I have to do!

Your deck is interesting in that it is a bit different to the usual Huntsman 31 ones.

Fairey renovation

My Fairey renovation is finished or as much as I intend doing, there is always a little improvement that would make it better but for now I am happy and think it will go in my Harbour, there is also the danger of overdoing it, I am sure we have all seen some horrors with superfluous bits stuck in the most inappropriate place. Not on this website I hasten to say phew !!
As I explained earlier this was just a topsides tidy up with new screen and forward rail fitted for the first time in her long life.
She has given me much enjoyment over the years for very little cost.
Please note the illustrious captain, the model named Mistress Quickly never goes anywhere without him.

Hats off to you, I had briefly thought of heat but I tend to be a little ‘ham fisted’ when it comes to gentle heat so went at it cold so to speak.
I have now given myself a problem by adding a vhf arial the height of the boat on the stand is around 41 cm which is more depth than my display shelves. It is currently on a shelf above my bed so if all my blogs stop you will know that my shelf fitting is poor and it fell on my head overnight, the boat weighs a ton.
Take care ChrisG

I can sympathise with your experience making the windscreen although my recent attempt seemed to be less fraught than yours.
Rather than using a channel to sit the screen in, I started with a raised 'dashboard' about 3mm thick. The screen was then carefully heated with a hot air gun and bent around this.
When it was a really good fit I glued it into place.
The leading edge of the dashboard was painted white, and a strip of thin white plastic glued onto the screen, both using canopy adhesive which is clear.
The effect is of the screen being set into a frame member.
Whilst mine was white it could just as easily have been aluminium or similar.
Happy sailing 😉

As promised the screen is now a permanent fixture after many attempts.
When I first worked on this model, years ago 20+ I fitted the screen using Plasticard 1mm sheet which was encouraged to go where I wanted it to fit using white Plasticard channel. For some strange reason I could not get channel to bend in quite the same way this time as it either kinked or snapped I even tried inverting another length of the same thinking that filling the trough would stop the kinking, but no.
My solution to this was by gluing 1mm square styrene section directly onto the topsides holding it in place using Tamiya masking tape which I love using until it hardened.
I then cut out a 1mm thick Plasicard screen using what was left of the old screen as a pattern, taped it securely in position against the styrene channel and gradually glued it in place. Last time I had channel running over the top of the screen, I think that I like it better without, more streamline and modern looking, 🤔🤔
Interestingly this plasticard does not like exposure to u.v. or is it that like the rest of us does not like getting old, the stuff from the earlier build was really brittle and just cracked.
Anyway onwards and upwards regards ChrisG

On the off chance that anybody was watching my rebuild let me say it has been slow and interrupted by other projects.
I have concentrated on topsides as the hull is ok and the improvements have included calf leather seats, new handrails, new hatches, a fresh paint job and last but not least new windscreen. This has been a two day nightmare and I well remember when renovating this model for the first time the screen was a b----y nightmare, same this time.
As we speak I am watching the glue dry on my latest attempt, scared to move or touch anything in case of disaster yet again.
If this works I will share my construction with you if not I will go and sit in a dark room and contemplate, something who knows what.

Fairey renovation

Hi Chis I acquired an Inga IV it was advertised at our club. I am currently restoring it, its a long job with having to re plank the deck and repaint the hull. The superstructure is in a poor state the wood being quite dried out so I am unsure of what I intend to do with it as yet (next on the list)
I currently have a blog running

Hello Roy
I am always amazed at the wealth of knowledge you have relating to our hobby of boat modelling and especially sailing boats. I think with us both it comes partly from our involvement over many years of sailing the real thing.
I am not an overly patient man and was coming to the decision that maybe a compromise is what I should go for and was considering something on the lines of a Nauticat, a friend had one until recently and I along with others admired it, also a Fisher 40 but they have such a strange deck arrangement I thought it only possible using grp which I wish to avoid my reasons for this I have often voiced.
Since my post yesterday I have had such a lovely response most unexpected but much appreciated, I must admit that being one of this happy band does really make me smile and brightens my day. Thank you all.
Also just now I received a p.m. from a gent I had spoken to several times before who has a Inge 1v plan that he has offered to send me, this could be Christmas all over again and the start of another rewarding period in my life, I do hope so but watch this space.
Meanwhile take care and thank you ChrisG

Fairey renovation

Looking good Chris, I have one that is in a sorry state and needs a lot of work on it, there is nothing in side and I have started striping it down for a total re-paint. Trouble is I have four other boats that I am working on and no room to work (stuck in a one bed flat)

Fairey renovation

Hi Chris, Memories have started to surface! Kingston mouldings used to make an Inga hull.

Robin Whitmarsh has since retired, I don't know if he sold the business as he used to do about 70 hulls with a few semi-kits thrown in.

I only ever had email contact with him it continued as we both much admired Vic Smeed and his plans.

I met Vic towards the end of his life when he came to fill in as an emergency for when our exhibition needed a maritime judge. One of the memorable days of my life was escorting him around and introducing him to some of our exhibitors.

Hi Chris, I think I mentioned to you before that the Inga IV plans do not include keel and bulkhead drawings to make a hull. The kit came with a ready made hull.
I have a set of plans and had a look.

I have had a general search and have not found similar hulls that could be utilised. The only one that might work by doubling up in size is an old free plan by Vic Smeed about 18 inches long. Name escapes me, but it was featured in a small book as well.

You might consider the Sarik plan for Altair, by Sandy Cousins. I had a chat with him years ago when he entered Altair in the Model Engineer exhibition competition. He had entered her as a scale model and as she was an RC sailing model I suggested he enter in the working sailing models where he would have got a Gold, I am sure. My advice was not followed up.

Back in those days I had 2 bronze medals for sailing yachts (my harbour, Condor and Endeavour), Judges were quite tough and the model quality was high, and the competition often had foreign entries. Over the years the sailing boats dwindled away.

One other scale sailing yacht is Caribee, BUT the author of the plans distorted the hull dimentions. The model plans are about 30 inches loa but should be about 40 inches.

I know this for a fact as I wrote to the American owner of Caribee Carleton Mitchel and have a letter from him including a photograph with some details of the hull dimentions. He was unaware that someone had drawn up plans for his yacht!

He had written a book called Passage East about his voyage across the Atlantic to join in with GB yachting in the Solent where he won many races.

I had been looking for the book at odd times and I had been crewing on a yacht and we put into a yacht club and I went to use 'the facilities' and had to pass a book shop on the way and they had a copy which I bought, I love serendipity!

Strangely enough I had a lonely hull of Inga IV which I saw and bought from a model shop and after I received his letter I realised that the Inga hull was almost identical with the actual Caribee hull.
An alteration of the stern would have been enough. But work and other commitments kept delaying construction and in the end I passed the hull on to good friend John Cook. He had her built and sailing in just over a month!!!

The Sarik drawings are detailed but the hull needs stretching so not an easy choice.

I can see why you are attracted to the model as she looks very graceful sailing, (see my harbour).

If I come up with any other choices I will let you know.
Good luck
Roy

Fairey renovation

I continue to hunt my next build project and am desperately looking for a set of plans for hull and superstructure of INGE 1V meanwhile have decided to have a sort out and smarten up a couple of "oldies".
Anyway top shelf in my workroom I came across one of my first acquisitions a 34" Fairey Huntsman which I bought through e--y in a right old state about 25 years ago, she was a real mess but after a lot of work I was rewarded with an attractive model boat which looked great on the water.
However over the years she has become scruffy and I would be too embarrassed to take her to the lake so yet another tidy up has ensued.
The hull and all of the mechanicals and electricals are fine and after fitting a new battery all seems to run well. The top however is a mess and my intention is to bring it back to better than ever.
This is not a build blog although on completion she may well find herself in my harbour, I am sharing this with anyone interested as I have had little to post since finishing Bluebird and miss the company of online chums.
Thanks and take care all ChrisG
