FPV (First person view) for scale model boats

BOTTOM LINE ! - Thinking back , the idea of using the FPV with goggles seemed a good idea at the time, but -
1. With goggles on - my eyes couldn't focus, and with lag, latency and glare I couldn`t sync the brain to frame or capture the shot !.

2. With the smart phone - Same problems, and with so much going on, unreliable wi-fi was too much for me !.
Maybe a different story with 2 people or a new brain 😝 !!

Hi to all, Great video Lew, you have a terrific setting there with support from the authorities.
My monitor cam was ok but poor video and also drops 2.4 signal from time to time !.
Phone works reasonably with GoPro app but lags with latency and difficult to see in sunny conditions so I tend to revert back to the GoPro 7 for stability and quality, using the remote to trigger shots.
My Sony also like me - getting old but struggles with zoom close up with glare over water ! - apart from that we get by the best we can 😖.
I use cybelink PD14 for editing with my old desktop which 🤞 keeps chugging along ☺️.
Cheers for now and enjoy your sailing ⛵😎.

Phil, etc al,

My Sony Camera (50X zoom) is dying after 10 years. The stabilization degradation is to the point the camera is useless. It did a good job of photographing boats "closeup" at 80-100 feet away, especially with a tripod.

Can't do much anyway with the low water situation here in west central Florida😎. We haven't had a model boat meet in the last two months😔.

Here is the last video I recorded with the Sony camera... You can see the advantage of using a long zoom camera👍, but you can also see the camera shake👎 even though I edited most of it out. Link:

Phil:
Can the FPV camera be linked to your iPhone or tablet?
I would like to incorporate this system to my rescue boat and at the same time be looking the actual video for easier docking with the stranded model.

Hi Lew, I know exactly where you are coming from.
Since a stroke I find it difficult to do everything at once - but it is good therapy and good fun to share the memories / results with club friends and like minded people.

For close in shooting, I have tried a small cam to frame/monitor the shots, and have also tried various cameras for the wide angle zoom shots but for video quality and stabilisation but I usually go back to the footage where I have used my Sony HX90 on land, or my Gopro 7 with hand remote for my camera boats - then spend hours editing !!!.

I`m sure you are aware of the problems that filming on water creates - ie. glare /reflection /white balance & exposure changes etc. - Also fast boats causing "bouncy" wake don't help the problems at all !!
How ever, it is fun, it is a challenge and we wouldn`t do it if we didn't enjoy it !.

I look forward to hearing of your experiences - cheers
Phil

I have a GoPro which drops off the wifi connection frequently. Had a GoPro knock-off - junk! My RunCam died when the boat it was on sank.

What I am looking for is one of those miniature cameras that could be mounted in an inconspicuous way as not to attract attention to it (like the photo in Algon's link).

Problem is that these usually seem to require multiple parts - camera, battery, cable, viewer and ??, all having to work together, i.e. same frequency, channel, pixels, and whatever.

I was wondering if anyone has done this successfully and would like to share the info (maybe I'm too lazy), rather than repeat the search and test.

All of this in contingent if we can survive the current drought here in west Florida. We get some rain about once every 3-4 weeks. Ponds look like they are in a solar "spring" tide.

Thanks, Lew

I’ve used GoPro and the GoPro copies (fauxPro) on my full sized boats and am pondering mounting one on my varnished hull.

Having invested a lot in the genuine GoPro set up I was very impressed with a £40 copy I bought from Amazon, came complete with all the waterproof cases, remote and wifi etc.

Just checked on Amazon and the one I bought a couple of years ago for underwater filming of my pond fish is now £50, but still worth the money.

Has anyone out there tried (successfully) a FPV setup in their boat?

I have been doing some research and there is a variety of ways to go. I'm thinking about a small camera with WiFi, and a viewer which can be mounted next to the RC transmitter. I do not want it to be expensive, yet have a reasonable viewer to see what is happening.

So, if you have a successful setup, do you mind sharing the information here. (Product names, model numbers, source, cost., etc).
