fin stabilisers

I will be doing a build blog, and I hope to get started as soon as Christmas is over.
More presseing matters to attend to over the next few days.
Thanks to everybody for their input and I will keep everyone up to date with the project.

HI Steve
Very similar vessel to the Sentinel and no doubt it will heel at speed. The Becker arrangement would certainly help but I'm not sure how effective the arraingement might be on a scale model. The stabilisers will certainly help in the turns.
I guess you will be considering the gyro to control the side to side roll and with a beam of 310mm there will only be 150mm either side of the unit.
Paul may be able to give more advice on its suitability now that we have the intended usage. Would you consider a build blog on this model as the subject will be of interest to others on the site.
Good luck 😀

When I say that I intend to use becker rudders I mean that I want to use them for the fin stabilisers as well as the standard vessel rudders.
I have included a photo of said items on full size vessel so as to give a clearer picture of my intentions.
The vessel in question is the German Coastguard and Fisheries Protection vessel Seeadler.
My model has a total length of 1644mm and width of 310mm (scale 1:43).
It will be powered by a pair or Torpedo 850 motors and 2.1:1 reduction drives throuth 60mm 4blade props.

HI Steve. Imo a gyro might only help with a fast boat. The gyros used in rc helis operate on the rudder channel and are fitted between the rx and rudder servo. There are two types heading hold and rate mode. Most helI flyers used hh as this gives themost aassistance. When flying the operator inputs the direction of th helI and the gyro compensates for any tail deflection caused by wind. Thus keeping the "heading held". On faster boat with a hull that could be affected by crosswind this could help, it's something I intend to play with on my fire boat as this narrow long hull is affected by the wind at hight speeds. Suprisingly there isn't much useage in a boat. Don't know what sort of boat or what sort of speeds you will want. Hope that helps

HI Steve
I helped a fellow modeller install working stabilisers on a Model Slipway Sentinel Coast Guard cutter and although manually linked to the rudders they did reduce the heeling effect at high speed. Your mention of Becker rudders suggests a trawler so I am interested to hear on which model you intend to use the stabilisers.

HI Paul, no experience whatsoever, was thinking about using the gyro in conjunction with a pair of servos basically to keep that boat level, and also I just want to have as many working functions as possible.
I intend to use a pair of modified becker rudders as the stabilisers so as to keep things as close to the original vessel as possible.

Has anybody got experience of using a helecopter gyro to control stabiliser fins on a 6 foot long model boat?
Any advice would be appreciated .

Steve
