Rod
Yellow tube is odd isn’t it? It might be where a stuffing box could be added, whatever it is, the prop doesn’t seem to turn.

Just popped off the wheelhouse and superstructure. Next, I took out a section of deck that was splitting along the grain. Turns out the hull is carved out of cedar, the deck is solid cedar too. It tapers from 3/8” (9mm) to 1/8” (3mm) in the aft.

The hull sides are roughly 3/4” ( 16mm) thick.

Cedar is light weight and carves relatively easy.

The model builder wrote his name and address in several places on the inside of the hull and superstructure

Hey Roy😀
That'll come in real handy for looking down the Wormholes you seem to keep falling into.

Hi I have dealt with mystery boats before. I have an endoscope which connects via a USB socket to my laptop screen. Is is about 5mm diameter and easily slips in to a small hole and has a built in light. Cost < £10 have used it a few times and has proved most useful.

Picked it up today and found it was a display model only. The wheelhouse is not removable and it appears to have been exposed to sunlight for long periods of time as some parts have warped. Interesting that the builder used needles on both the bow and aft for the safety wire holders.

There are four removable torpedoes which are not seen in these photos.

The hull appears to be sheet on frame as the model is light weight. This leads me to think the hull is hollow and not a carved solid hull.

I will give it a water ballast test; if it checks out, then I may use it with one of my tugs and tow it.

Hi. Having viewed the photos which you have posted, the model seems to be a freelance torpedo boat modelled to appear similar to the 'Brave Borderer' looking at the lines of the superstructure. The real vessel was built by Vosper Thorneycroft and would have had at least two engines and prop shafts, possibly even three. The Brave Borderer was the pre cursor to the production of the Perkasa gas turbine torpedo boat.
Hope that helps.

I was never one to weather my trains. But perfectly-finished model boats seem odd to me. I've been around many full-size vessels & most of them were not kept in the pristine condition that I see most models.
I don't put a huge effort into the finish of my boats...you know, the 3 coats of primer, 600grit wet sandpaper between each of "7" coats, a final 3 coats of gloss. Too much work.
I loved the pre-coloured plastic hulls that Graupner used to put out.
My neighbour's sailboat rises from its trailer in his driveway. Its dented, paint above waterline is scuffed.Zebra mussels cover 90% of hull below his peeling waterline. I'm tempted to model that look.

Hi RodC I had an argument with a kit manufacturer. I said am I building a kit or a model of the full size boat. Often short cuts spoil the boat, perhaps not so much now but to those less informed it can be annoying.

I used to know a model boater who would triumphantly tell you what was wrong with your model boat.

His were mainly correct but maybe his eyesight did not reveal the poor building of his own models. He used to write about his models in the full size 'House magazine' they stood up to photographs but even at stand off inspection they showed a poor finish.

Yes, the PT's such as PT109 (Kennedy's boat) had 3 engines & 3 props in part for redundancy, but also to provide high speed on real water.😊

My DUMAS PT arrived with a single drivetrain & one tiny 1" plastic prop. Quite disappointing.😭

But DUMAS insists this is all it needs to run at scale high speed🤔

The family did not want a model built by their deceased father and has offered it Free to anyone interested.

Can anyone identify the vessel?

The hull is 27”

Here are some photos which if you look closely it has one prop shaft. I asked if it was motorized and they said no. If this were a scale model though, it would have had two and possibly three screws. I am looking at in a week. They have it on hold for me.
