Hello Doug, Hello to all model boat builders!
Yeep I'm a little crazy but this is just the spice you need to live. Even if it makes you cry sometimes, put your head down and get through it!
I'm actually a native of the French part of Switzerland, but have lived here near Lucerne since 1960. I suppose the crazy nature of the people of Central Switzerland has rubbed off on me a bit. . . which I consider a positive thing.
Yes, Doug, not all Swiss people are reserved ... You have described me very well to the others here,🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bye together, Michel Cl. (the very crazy swissman) 👍 👍 👍

Hopefully this thread has provoked all members to consider this possibility, this responsibility. None of us ever know when we may be called to the Other Side. My late wife passed 17 months ago without a valid Last Will & Testament. Since i was 15yr her senior we had all assumed that i wud go first. I had my affairs in order, she didnt, she was gone in 4 seconds ( massive brain bleed) & its now a complete & utter mess to sort out now ($$$$$)

Not at all Stephen!
It is a valid question which prompted an interesting discussion with much food for thought😉
And I've already received a first PM response to my 'little' problem.
Now it's just a question of logistics🙄
Pay no attention to our 'slightly nutty' Swiss member's last comment.
He's a refreshing example of the exception that proves the rule.
I've often been in Switzerland both on business and private and found the folks to be friendly and hospitable but often rather reserved.
Michel is an exception being slight nutty - but that's inevitable; He's a Model Boat Builder so he's bound to be slightly nutty - like the rest of us😁
Cheers, Doug 😎

All sorted, my Grandson is a keen modeler so as far as I can see he will get everything
(not sure where he and his dad will put it all) maybe they'll move into my house.

Re your post Colin.
Sounds like you had a great day and have put a good plan in place for ensuring the boats future.

Having just spent a wonderful day with my Son and grandson and granddaughter sailing various boats from my fleet.
We managed to take 15 for a cruise on the canal.
Afterwards we had a long chat about what is to become of my fleet.
My son would like to have all of them, but doesn't have the amount of space I have.
So it has been decided that he will have as many as will fit in my boat transport trailer up to 30 depending on size, as they are quite safe and dry in it.
The rest I will offer for sale and donate to RNLI. If not sold I will give to other young club members.
My machinery and equipment will go to my son and grandson.
My wife's dolls houses and her collection is to go to daughter in law and granddaughter.
BUT HOPEFULLY NOT TOO SOON, as I still enjoy my hobbies, have just taken up woodturning, another new skill to learn.
I blame it on Freecycle, freegle and freelywheely, as people keep giving useful stuff away.
So unless I die, let's keep modelling, cheers Colin.
Fair winds and calm waters,
COLIN.

Evening all.
End strategy,or as I prefer to call it “going down the slipway”
I am lucky that I have already reduced the fleet of late and now just have eight boats in various states of commission, readiness or rebuild.
I am even luckier that my two sons are keen builders and two of the grandchildren are following suit so I know full well that the fleet and tools etc will go to good homes and be sailed.
It’s a sad but inevitable subject that so many tend to put on the back burner.
Stay healthy and safe one and all.
Regards Bill.

Well said Mike - in this (and in all too many things) the Swiss show us all the optimum way to live.

Few know when the inevitable happens - and we mature fellows have to make the very best of the time we have left.

I for one will sell or donate my countless models and kit. This is in the hope they bring others the joy and satisfaction they have brought me.

Hello hobbyists!
Yes for goodness sake!! I solved it by giving each ship a name of one of the children.
So everything is clear, and the grandchildren also look forward to going to the pond with me every time.
We have some young people in the club who like to receive something that makes sense.
But people!! I'm not planning to go yet at 76! I have set myself a goal of living to see 98 in good health! That's the way to do it!
And as long as there are still a few corpses in the cellar, I don't have time to join up!
That's not possible! Besides, the Swiss live to a ripe old age, sometimes even outliving their wives. . .which was different until now. .
Humour people and look ahead! Clearing up during your lifetime is ok and I have already sold on or given away some things. .
That's how it's done!

Cheers!!! Captain Haddock alias Michel-Cl.

Having had to assist my wife acting as executor for her late parent’s estate I’ve been thinking about this, mainly to explain what things are so they can be moved on with an accurate description.

I already have a spreadsheet of realistic values for the 20 odd pond yachts I have in the house as these have gained significantly in value in the past few years. I’d hate them to be binned or donated and have instructions for them to be sold with estimated value.

I suppose I should do the same with the r/c boats, mainly as a guide should anything happen.

I am planning though to have another 30+ years to collect a few more.

So far quite a variety of responses from lew (US) and Newby7 (Canada) (advertise / give to club for auction or sale), to RodC in Canada who has it all planned. Well done Rod.
RN in Munich methinks has a serious problem !
The prize for providing the most amusement this morning goes to DWBrinkman in the US for a wonderful cartoon. Love it !😉

With this subject seams we are looking at the old saying.
YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU.
I didn't start building models thinking who may want them when I'm gone. For me finding a plan of a boat to build gave me great satisfaction when finished. My boats may not survive.I'm sure parts and items will and someone else will get the joy of them.

It's funny you are thinking about this. It's been on my mind especially since I found out my heart is not doing well. If I knew someone close, I would give them all my stuff. I will probably advertise for someone who would appreciate all my tools and models and just give it to them.

I must admit that this is something I have given some thought to recently.
Looking around my workshop and cellar it has become clear to me that my Stash has long since reached and exceeded the SABLE threshold.
Stash Accumulated Beyond Life Expectancy.🤔

Not having any friends or acquaintances here in Munich interested in model making of any form, and the only Model Boat Club I knew here having apparently gone defunct and vanished from my local lake (Ostpark Munich) some 20 years ago I have reluctantly resigned myself to the thought that when I finally embark on my last voyage that all that I have built and collected over the years (decades🙄) will end up in Stephen's 'Skip of Doom'😭
I shudder to think how many thousand Euros are tied up in the models, kits, tools and machinery (3D printer, lathes and mini milling machine etc) parts, fittings, RC components TXs/RXs, ESCs, servos of all sizes micro to standard/heavy duty, electronic test gear; PSUs, lab standard multimeter, analogue and digital oscilloscopes. As well as; smokers, sound models analogue and programmable, motors brushed and brushless with appropriate ESCs (mostly QuikRun, mTronik and Action Electronic or Graupner NAVY V30) Etc etc.
Details of RC gear; 27MHz, 35MHz, 40MHz, 2.4GHz on request.
Largest kits are: two 1/72 Flower class Corvette (1 early Revell version, 1 later Tech version), Deans Marine HMS Manxman fast minelayer/cruiser 1/96, ENGEL Modellbau Akula ~1/128 submarine with all RC diving gear and automatic fail-safes.

Unusual ARTR kits are an Airship - just needs Helium and RC gear😉, a Catalina flying boat 1.47m (corrected😁) wingspan with 2.4Gig RC, a Carson Model Sport RC racing boat / flying boat - convertible with 'plug in' wings - complete with 40MHz RC. Not to mention a considerable collection of SLA, NiMh and LiPo batteries and Graupner Polaron programmable charger with colour display of battery condition and discharge/charge cycle state and temperature. Memory for 20 battery types and charge/discharge cycle parameters.
And LOTS MORE; e.g. over 60 plastic kits (1/700 to 1/72) - largest being the 2 Revell Flower class, USS Enterprise 1/350, Revell Bismarck 1/350, Fletcher class destroyer 1/144, Merit Titanic 1/350, HMS Ark Royal, HMS Hood, HMS Prince of Wales, HMS Vanguard 1/350.

So what to do??
If one or more members 'local' to me; Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Czechia, Switzerland, France, UK, Hungary (Peter - Mouldbuilder?) would like to club together, hire a Transit or equivalent, and trundle over to me they are welcome to come and 'take their pick'.
Any interested parties PM me and I'll respond with address and more detail of any particular interest. I'd rather give stuff away than think that it would end up in the crusher☹️
Cheers all, Doug 😎
PS; there's also a mammoth 1/24 kit of a De Havilland Mosquito, was earmarked for my Dad, ex RAF radio and radar specialist whose three favourite 'types' that he worked on or flew (test flights only!) were Mosquito, Spitfire and Meteor (esp. the NF11 variant). Unfortunately he passed on before I could deliver it.

I have a written plan outside of my Will ( I had multiple health scares over 11 trips to hospital ). I have a BMF (best male friend) who is one of my 2 executors. He lives across the street so he is designated to clean out my apt. (My BFF is to assist with estate matters but she is partially disabled & low energy so not able for the physical work.) He has a list of 3 boat club members to contact to pick up things, kits & completed boats, supplies, components. My marine items have a blue dot on them, boxes, containers, etc. Even the books & magazines. My Amateur Radio stuff bears green dots (those items are unrelated to my ships). My electronics stuff bears yellow dots (function generator, adjustable power supplies, AM/FM radio kits, stocks of components, breadboards etc). Stuff he shud keep for himself has red dots....drones, toolboxes, fridge, TVs, vcrs, dvds, PC etc. My steampunk table lamps are designated to special ladies. He gets everything else.

I plan to do the same thing my dad did.
So far my collection resembles "The Island of Misfit Toys". I've picked up several boats that are old builds and have been neglected. I'm giving them the TLC they need, hoping to bring them back to their former glory. Once I get enough practice/ experience I intend to take on a full build.

I'm not sure many of us have a plan for the disposition of our boats. When I had to move I sold some of my work for little money. Broke up some and kept parts off of them. Most of my builds are scratch builds and other then parts worth very little to others.
The club I belong to gets donations from families and members to help with the disposal of thier loved ones work.
We sell what we can at a club auction donating the money made to a Boys and Girls club in our area.

I would love to know what strategies if any, other people have for the distribution or disposal of their models, materials and tools after (or before) their demise.
I suspect many have not planned for this but I for one will be doing so.😉
