Also known as heavy bunker oil (HBO). It has a tar like consistancy and needs pre heating before use. NATO fuels designation F77 or Navy Heavy Distillate, used as boiler fuel and very large C I engines...

Quite correct Nick. The luff is the leading edge of the sail. The distance back to front is the foot, although strictly speaking the foot is the BOTTOM EDGE of the sail. whilst it has a length or distance that does not define it. 😉

Hi all, just come back from casual yacht sailing I have been in 'Irons' and on a 'lee shore'. My 575 loosened up its rigging and once this happems they sort of fall apart with a strong wind. A sturdy young man came to help and we got her going again.

Doogle, can you please share with us where and how you can find something like that for £20 - I have been searching all the usual sites trying to find something even half decent, not worried about having to refurbish even.

With regards to yacht sailing ⛵️, I can certainly agree. Recently picked up a DF65 for the grand sum of £20.00. Took it out last Wednesday with our midweek group for an initial sail. Spent most of the afternoon being lapped around the course but learnt a lot,particularly about positioning with any wind 😀 'scuse the red insulation tape, waterproof cover over the electronics only just covers the hatch, new cover in process of being made

have a go at yacht sailing. It is unlike motor boating since you (generally) have no motor and rely on sails and wind. It can be very challenging but satisfying

Luckyduck, I think blame lies with the engineering branch rather than the seamanship branch. According to reports they lost engine power...

I suppose that "In Irons" is a bit like a prisoner chained to a castle wall, as he isn't going to go anywhere fast or even slow when you think about it. I find the terminology of all these sailing terms quite interesting and a bit like learning a whole new language, as to be perfectly honest I know naff all about sailing which is a branch of this hobby that I have never tried.
