For anyone who hasn't already done so, I really, really, really, recommend the book written by Michael Palin called (Erebus: The Name of a Ship). Incredibly well written and makes you understand the harsh realities of exploration in years gone by.

A very interesting question today, and thank God it was nothing to do with sailing. I ended up watching a great video of the recovery operation from the two ships in this expedition, which were in incredible condition considering their age. Regards, Gary.

I got it right today!!! Must be the coffee. Yesterday I got it wrong, I was looking for ELF, not VLF.

As a retired Naval COMMS engineer I'd have been drummed out of the club if I'd got today's sub COMMS question wrong!😁
Worked on several sub refits in S America, Type 206 and 209, and a few new builds notably the Spanish built 'Scorpenes' (Scorpions) for Chile.

I was puzzled with the question today, but as a sloop only has a mainsail and foresail ( known as jib sail) I opted for the jib.

At my time of life, I get easily confused and this happens with age and is QUIZ related. I have now completed the quiz twice, the first time around I got it wrong, and the second time I put jib and got it right and then noticed that the question has been altered to suit. Very confusing first thing in the morning. You are doing a grand job, Stephen, keep up the good work and look after the pensioners like myself. Gary.

On a sailing vessel with a main and a foremast the triangular sail ahead of the foremast is the staysail. Next (moving forward) is the jib.🤔🤔🤔

Well that's as maybe but I just logged in again and had to to re-do Q of the D so never saw that post and got it 'wrong' again.

Gary, I opted for staysail too. I discounted 'mizzen' as on a single masted sailboat the mizzen mast is actually mizzen (I'll get me coat)...

Cashrc, You stirred a memory there. I had a Chevvy Impala around 1975 can't remember what year or model it was but it was enormous! Left hand drive, front seat like a 3 seater sofa, electric hood (soft top to you lot over the water I think). It drank petrol like it was going out of fashion, the engine was so powerful the torque made the whole car twitch when you blipped the throttle. I only had it for one summer but boy what a head turner, there wasn't many, if any, Impalas in North West UK in 1975! I had to get rid in the end because I couldn't afford to run it on an apprentice's wages but it was great fun while I had it. Allways guaranteed to attract the gels. .

This could be an awful lot easier if the answer to the question was correct. The answer is MAINSAIL, as in the bigger of the two and the main one of the two. As MAINSAIL was not among the answers I opted for Staysail which made a modicum of sense to me. It would be extremely useful for every participant if the correct answer was actually among the four answers given. (I rest my case My'Lod.) Gary.

I suppose the jib could be behind the mainsail when the tide you are sailing against is faster than your speed through the water, so technically you are going backwards over the seabed?😁😁

if on a dead run the jib is one side mast and mainsail on the other so no chance of one behind the other

Actually Doug, that 45 was in a stash of records s my brother left me when he got married at 18 and moved out. I was 8. He DID NOT leave me his 1962 Chevy Impala SS however😭🤣

Surely a jib sail is in front of a mast not behind.
"A jib is a triangular sail that sets ahead of the foremast of a sailing vessel." Wiki.
On a sloop, defined as a single masted sailing vessel (Sloops of war not included!), the triangular sail behind the mast IS the mainsail. There is nothing behind that.

Hi Pressonregardless, Happy birthday, I have my birthday on Friday 21st. July. I shall be 85 but feel much younger! It is all a state of mind.
Plan ahead and make sure you have a good reason to get up every morning!

I have one mantra, "Never say you are too old to do something". I am trying to get one of my younger generation to accompany me on a Zip wire. I have asked for several years now.

My question is "Who is working through a 'Bucket list'"?

My best one was swimming on the Great Barrier Reef about 6/7 years ago. I have sung along with others "O solo mio" on a gondola going through the canals of Venice.

It is also good to have other facets in your life and hopefully some that keep you fit. I enjoyed ballroom and latin dancing 3 times a week for 25 years. (Ah the ladies, sweet memories).

I used to be a dead shot with a rifle (and a Bren gun) I was in the County team for competition shooting. When I was in the RAF I got 6d (2 1/2.p) a day extra for being a Marksman.

I swam a lot and taught youngsters dinghy sailing and was a registered Lifesaver.
Retired as club Secretary after 3 decades.
Now I 'teach' Bridge one morning a week.

On Friday our daughter is taking me into London to go to the top of Battersee Power station, also a nice lunch and a trip on the River Thames. I hope my knees last out? I ought to be knackered after that!

I have several model boats and yachts still to build.

Life is for living and, you get just one go only!
