Try as rudder only if not sure which winch to use - Its horses for courses, if you are happy to sail in light conditions just use a lever arm on a basic servo.

Good article. Big issue nowadays is getting good balsa. Most available seems to be farmed balsa which does not have the quality.

A member of our club made one with a balsa hull. It goes quite well though I think he had to increase his bulb weight to make it legal.

We also have two Wee Nips with rounded hulls. One glass and the other timber. All else is regulation WeeNip dimensions. Very hard to beat. Attached are my only two photos of the rounded hull boat (red). Yellow is mine and one of the few instances I was in front of him.

A Scroll saw is on my list, was thinking about on for the current project but the cheapest around are about £130 ($155), you need to spend £200 ($240 to get a decent one. I'm looking for a used one as I think it would get a fair bit of use.

If you have a good supply of balsa wood, look for the C grain it is stiffer. A grain has virtually clear, very light and flexible and generally softer. B grain will have more stiffness and some pattern to it., though it will snap if you try to bend it around a hull frame.

I will and have used it but prefer Basswood.

Adding to all this, you must cover the work with fibreglass cloth for added strength.

I have the Sarik hull set, plans and dvd, a cast lead keel bulb, a carbon fiber RB11 rig and Housemartin sails. It's been sat on a shelf for a couple of years now...

Are these machines available in the UK? Mine was used as new ones are expensive.

Another idea, when I was teaching in the woodshop, people from the community would approach us asking for help to cut or prepare materials for them.

My hands would not do what you did either, which is why, I use this machine when cutting out parts.

I’m glad the next ply cutting is only 0.8mm, should be a lot easier.

My hands would definitely not like that. I do have a bandsaw in my workshop but I would still find it difficult.

Having spent many hours cutting 10 frames for the Eventide from 3mm ply I can empathise. The straight lines were OK with a stanley knife but did need multiple passes. I ended up buying a cutting kit for my Dremel for the curved cuts.

I can understand you. I think I'd baulk at cutting that lot out too!

Thank you William. The panels from Sarik sound interesting. The reason I asked the question is because I have Arthritis in both my hands and although I have hand tools and workshop power tools I find ply difficult to handle and cut.

In theory, yes. but the outside would need a layer of glass to strengthen and waterproof it. the inside would also need waterproofing. Have just bought a laser cut set of ply panels from Sarik Hobbies £35 + p&p. Havent started on it yet but it looks good.
