A question about Square Riggers

Having had closer looks at videos above. I have found a fault The royal yards would come down the furl the sails, to rest on the top gallant yard. in reality I am just Jealous of Jean Claude.

Looking at Jean Claude's site as above. Using the the translator button the system becomes clear, even if the translation is a little strange. First you will have to make some complicated electronics. That counts me out. Then you will have to be conversant and have access to a CAD lathe, me, out again. The model is large 100 kg, approximately 2 cwt, need a crane?? if you can do it I take my hat off to you. 👍
The bigger the model the better it will sail. The lines can be seen going through the deck ( the translation says bridge) into plastic tube going past the cleats where they would be secured in full size.

My model schooner's keel was of lead (1ins deep 3/4ins wide) & a keelson of wood to hold the ribs. To much weight low down will make a model bob about like a cork. I say was as is now in a museum, having four large models it had to go to make way for the latest. Reposting photos sorry no video.

A question about Square Riggers

I was hoping someone knew more about Jean-Claude Cornaz's Cutty Sark ... The only web site I have with some information (in French) is:

http://cocatrez.net/Water/JeanClaudeCornaz/index.html

It is amazing what he managed to come up with! 😀 And, yes, I intend to duplicate as much of his master piece as I can for my Galleon 😁

Nice period looking schooner. interesting exercise in furling but in practice I suspect the wind still fills the sails. Possibly the best option is to remove any top sails in a blow. it would be good to see some on water pics/videos.
What sort of ballast do you use? is there a false keel? 😀

😄 Thanks lieutenant, here is a view on deck. please note the deck is as it would be in this type of boat, covered in a mixture of old paint & old oil, no time to holystone every morning.

A question about Square Riggers

I have a west country schooner, carrying two square sails which furl & can be turned by remote control. The turning as full size only instead of belaying at the pin rail the line continues through the deck, routed through plastic tube (fuel pipe) To a sail arm servo. The servo has a double arm 1 for each side. With a model like the Cutty Sark I think it best to fix the yards to the mast and rotate the mast. The furling required the topgallant yard to lower down to the topsail yard and the top sail to pull up. This I did with blocks ( home made wooden ) . This was operated with a strong servo again fitted with a double arm 1 up 1 down. But this was not really worth the bother. Next time I will be rolling up by hand before sailing.

A question about Square Riggers

HI Everyone!

I was wondering If It would be possible to make a RC Galleon that Is capable of furling and unfurling It's sails, along with controlling the pitch of the sails?

I've seen a couple of videos of the clipper ship 'Cutty Sark', from years ago, with a simular rigging set up, and was hoping that someone had a more detailed explanation on how this magic was accomplished or could point me In the right direction! 👍

Thanks!!
