Thanks Doug. I'll check those settings.

If my CCD's become OCD, I'll be SOL. 👍😁

(Sorry for the hijack Len.)

Hi Black Shoe,
"my point-and-shoot seems to make the lights in the photos brighter than they really are. "
Main reason for that is that your eye reacts to light logarithmically, whereas the receptor chips (CCD or whatever) react linearly.
Plus the auto shoot will be doing it's best to extract all possible detail from the scene and increases sensitivity, e.g setting a higher equivalent ISO level.
Remember the grainy pics from 1600 ISO 35mm film?
Set the camera manually to ISO 400 or less and you should have more luck.
Have a look at the White Balance and Night Scene choices as well.
Happy twiddling 😉

LOL, Sorry Doug, my head is down the rabbit hole🤣
I'm in full agreement about Evans. There are several other suppliers and I'll put together a source list. One thing I will mention is the RC aircraft field is offering some impressive light options, especially suitible for searchlite and such.
Meanwhile I'll keep my head low while you guys loob wonder ideas about.

Thanks again to all for the info on the LED's. Evans indeed looks a great source to have. I will be placing an order for the LED's for the caged fixtures I just ordered from Shapeways and also for running lights, search lights and towing lights.

Don't want to get caught up in the 'collateral damage' eh Tora?
Like I said - we wake up earlier over here😉
Seriously though folks😁
I learned about Evans some years back while designing some lighting circuits for one of Ed's (Figtree) magnificent tugboats and sourcing suitable components in the US. They do indeed have some excellent stuff. I have since seen several other members recommend them.
All the best, keep on lighting up your boats BUT NOT the dreaded weed!
Cheers, Doug 😎
PS You are more than welcome to 'enter the fray' anytime Tora!

Thank you.

Dang! Doug beat me to the draw again!😊

Evans is indeed the source. Very cool stuff available through them. A worthwhile address to have.

The 3mm LED's would fit in the printed globes, but may prove to be too bright unless you lowered your voltage. I used the "nano chips" rated at 12V, but run them on 6V. The chips are on one side of the leads and if you install them facing the bulkhead that the light fixture is mounted against it seems to diffuse the light a little more. I'm not a photographer so don't know all the proper settings, but my point-and-shoot seems to make the lights in the photos brighter than they really are.

Hi Len,
"were to get the bulbs"
Favourite source in the States seems to be here
https://evandesigns.com/pages/lighting-your-model-ships
Not 'bulbs' but LEDs, use about half the current or less than the 'grain of wheat' filament bulbs in the Graupner originals.
I haven't seen those since I used them for bow and stern jack staffs on my 1/72 destroyer some 30 years ago. Mine came mounted on a long brass tube, ideal for fixing on the model 😉
At 1/25 you can probably fit 3mm or even 5mm LEDs to them.

Have fun, but don't get all lit up!

Thanks Black Shoe and all the others that replied. The units from Shapeways seem to be ideal for what I want and may actually be better than the Graupner ones. Any idea were to get the bulbs you are referring to?
Your boat is outstanding and I only hope mine turns out half as well. 👍

Hi Tora (Tora Tora!)
Yep I noticed the hiccup too, kept getting attached error message.
Suspected that a security certificate had expired, was about to advise Stephen when it was fixed 😀
"I kept trying to post the information" - Over this side of the pond we get up a few hours before you guys over there 😴! 😉

No sweat BS 👍
I've used Shapeways a few times: 4.7" and 20mm Oerlikon guns for my 1/72 H class destroyer and some magnificent twin 50cals for my 1/32 ELCO 80 PTB.
Level of detailing was great, but the 4.7s were disappointing as they seemed to be printed 'in one go'. Meaning that the gun screen internals and barrel were fixed - no chance of elevation control as I had planned 😭

NOTE; beware of the 'frosted print' versions! They have a surface texture like 240 grade wet & dry paper. Smoothing (with acetone or Dichloromethane!) is difficult without damaging the detailing.
Cheers, Doug 😎

Hi Len,
ToraDog gave me a head's up that you were looking for deck lights.
I haven't seen any of the Graupner fittings you've requested, but maybe an acceptable alternative would be some printed globes. I got mine from a Jan De Witte through Shapeways. I forget the actual size, but I asked Jan about a specific height in mm because I'm working in 1:18 scale. If you go to Shapeways and search for "Caged Deck Lights" they should be on the first page listed as 1:25. I used nano LED chips to light them for a couple of reasons. They don't get hot, they're not super bright, and as the name implies are very small. As for the cage I went to a craft store and bought a super fine paint pen. These come in colors and I found them to be the easiest to paint the "cage" part. The gold color looks enough like bronze to work well I think.

I do not have a source for the Graupner products, but there are alternative available. I will post links as soon as I can dig them out.

Hi, I am looking for a package of Graupner caged bulbs/lamps part number 638. I need them to compete my 1/24 scale tug. Pictures of the construction and completed boat to follow.
I am on Long Island NY. Any one sailing around here?
Thanks, Len
