Hi Colin, great present, - you will have so many options you won't know where to start. Fly Sky TH9X is a pretty common radio round the world (under various names -Turnigy, I-Max etc) and the one I've had for about 10 yrs has been totally reliable. I have a couple of TGY 9XRs which I suspect were made by Fly Sky for HK (as a lot of their radios are apparently - re-branded) which have similar capabilities to the FR Sky Taranis. Apart from a few minor glitches at the start, (had to replace a pot not centering 100%) they have been brilliant, and are able to be programmed to do just about anything (once you turn your brain backwards and get the programming, - developers don't think like us) They are capable of open source programming, but that's too much for my brain to handle, and not really necessary for most normal models.

I'm sure you new radio will be able to do anything once you get the hang of it. It will certainly entertain the grey matter. I remember a guy saying to me once, "see the lights flashing on my plane? that's the radio doing it, not a module." May the force be with you lol.

The short vid shows the 9XR radio 'stepping' the flap servos, using a 3 pos switch. All the speeds up and down can be varied.

Great piece of kit and it looks like FlySky are following FrSky in abandoning open source software in favour of in house offerings. The specs are really impressive and the range is ideal for airborne craft and I see you have a quadcopter so should be ideal. I have watched a couple of videos showing people programming their Tx's and was reminded of my Taranis. The good points are you really do have complete control over the whole system and there are multiple mixing functions. The touch screen controls are good and what you are programming is shown on the screen so little chance for error.
It does seem possible to plug other modules in the rear and use other systems but two way communication may not be available when using say legacy FrSky systems.
I hope you are going to report how you progress.

I already have a couple of flysky 6 channel systems and they're really reliable 4 years on.
This new one is a lot more complex, but flysky have a good companion download so am getting used to it slowly before using with a boat.
Have given a trial run with a quad-copter and I am sure it's easier to use than the futaba system that came with it.
All in all I am glad my sister sent it to me, great present, certainly more expensive than anything I already owned, I couldn't afford it.

I haven't used FlySky but have been using FrSky equipment for quite a while, at least 6 years and find them very good and agree with Cashrc and ToraDog.

One thing I would add is there is an excellent program that can be downloaded for free called Open TX companion that enables programming of your radio on a laptop or desktop computer which once learned makes it a lot easier to program your radio for your boats.

As ToraDog said there are some great You Tube videos and yes the learning curve is steep at the start but worth the effort in my opinion.

Hi Colin. Like Toradog stated the Flysky brand is well represented over here in the US. They’re not a premium brand, but they’re not a no name brand either. I know many people who use them and are quite pleased with them. I don’t have a FlySky transmitter, I use a Radiomaster which is multi protocol, but I have several of the FlySky recievers which have been very reliable, save one which was used. The antenna came loose, I resoldered it and it works fine. I’m sure you’ll like your new system!!

I have seen FlySky mentioned a lot on RC Groups. It is a fairly commonly used system over here. I think/have heard, that it is ver similar to the FrSky system, which I have been using for about two years now. Being of the new genration computer radios, and I being of the abacus generation, the learning curve is quite steep. I found many wonderful videos on YouTube that saved me hours of frustration. Your nephew will probably be your best source for information and help setting up a system. All that said, these radios will get you to the Moon and back.The capabilities are almost limitless and for boats, well overkill would be a fair description. I love mine.
