Robo,

I agree with the previous post that sheeting would be better.
Make some cardstock patterns of the pieces.

You can glue two pieces together to get thickness, but for length, there needs to be a brace across the joint. otherwise it will be too weak.

Take a look at this site. It has simple plans which may give you some ideas of how to do this

1 Can I glue 2 lite ply sheets together to make my surface longer, or would that jeopardise strength?
(A) not sure what you mean here a picture or diagram would help

2 Also, when planking the hull is there a way to hide the plank lines so it looks all one piece?
(A) You could use full sheets instead of planks providing the curvature are not to severe looking at the plans I would have thought it would have been sheeted anyway, so a full sheet on both port and starboard sides the same on the bottom, a sheet for each side and finally one piece for the stern, the bow may be solid balsa carved to shape.

Good luck Robo. Take your time and ask questions if not sure you are doing the right procedure. I have found this membership will answer all of your questions just ask.
You have a good start on the tools to work on the boat. As you build you may find other bits and pieces needed.

Almost ready to get started

Hi guys!! So my first build is nearly about to commence!!!!
Some of you may know that I was wanting to build a static roro ferry but I’ve decided that I need to gain knowledge of the whole modelling process.

I managed to obtain a hull template from Google and I’m getting ready to start the build.

I’m a novice at it at the moment so forgive me if I sound clueless!!

Im using birch ply,( gonna do the planking in Balsa.) My plan is to give the finished article to my nephew.

I started by making the templates from the drawing out of cardboard (a pizza box hahahaha) I’ve bought myself a few bits and pieces to get started, I’ll list them now and maybe you guys can see if I’ve missed anything.

. Scalpel number 3 and 4
. Xacto knife
. Fret saw
. David wood plane
. Assortment of files
. Bosh home and garden jig saw
. Ply wood jig blades
. Gourella glue
. Set square
. Magic tape
. Zona razor saw
. Quick grip clamps.
