Venetian Evening

Mornin John,
I don't think it was done commercially and may in the meantime have been stopped by some EU law!
My 'Educational' trips were when I was 15 and 16, to northern Germany.
My first VW Beetle experience was being driven round the cobbled streets of Stade, north of Hamburg on the Elbe river, by Ushi, the older sister of my school exchange partner. Aaaah Ushi .... 😉

Just don't remember that at all. We were on an educational holiday but weren't told about tobacco growing. I thought tobacco was only grown in warmer climes. Just goes to show yer.👍

Venetian Evening

Almost the whole country smells of it to a greater or lesser extent John. Farmed and home-grown all over the shop😲

Funny Doug I don't recall the smell of tobacco in Bruges at all. Home boiled sweets shops, bakers' shops. and beer in Blankenbergh though.👍 The smell of tobacco I'm very familiar with. My Brother worked in Ogden's and he brought the smell home.🤓

Evenin John,
I was also 17 when I was in Bruges, 1968.
Now I think of it Bruges did smell. But not the canals. it was the tobacco curing that ponged🤔 Doug 😎

Anglo French actually as I met a French girl and Maman. A pair of beauties. Also Anglo English as we were 4 lads an 7 lovely girls . Say no more. I was in Bruges/Brugge not Venice. Go back and read posts correctly LOL Anglo-Italo relations? if you look at my family name Mantova it is the italian for Mantua which is not too far from Venice. it is where Romeo was exiled to when he "SLEW" Tibault. it is also where the opera Rigoletto is set. I have sung the role of the naughty duke of Mantua/Mantova a couple of times. Made interesting reading on cast list. "THE DUKE di MANTOVA/ MANTUA"---- Mr John Mantova .If you don't know the opera he's the one who sings "La Donna et Mobile"👍

Drove down the Rhine to Switzerland. Great trip, apart from the rain🤔 Remember the Weinfest in Rüdesheim though. Well, most of it 😉

Ok Westquay I am impressed. Busy for me is doing two things at once like say thinking and breathing.

Onetenor, I will check on the info they sent to make sure and let you know if I learn anything.

Had a hint this evening that the visitors may not be able to come tomorrow.......Oh joy!

NPJ Why the change of venue? Used to be Erias Park didn't it?
Doug.🤓 Bruges smells too even when raining. Especially down at water level in a motor boat on tour.😆👍

Venetian Evening

A year, Doug, but a lot of that has been waiting for etchings which are finally promised for Monday and just trying to get information. The only one I was able to see was in Norwich which is too far to go to on a whim. Nobody wants to admit they have one because they're worth so much. in the end, the geezer in Norwich had eight! And an Austin 7, a Rolls-Royce, a Morgan, 2 Sprites, a Morris Minor and 2 ordinary moderns, apart from other bikes. His garage was bigger than his house and mine put together.
But I do have other stuff to do which was already promised. Nearly there now though and the next one is round the corner for reference.

So, I'm intrigued....what's Venetian about the event?

NPJ, a man has to eat lunch and take a cuppa from time to time. I sit at my pootah, (no 'phone) and check the forum while I wait for tea to cool down so I can take my awkward pills.

I have however made a chain guard from two separate hand beaten brass halves, soldered and cleaned up, researched it's fixings and made them too, plus the rear mudguard supports. Now I'm orff to check the tank fits.

Venetian Evening

It sure does, and then some😲😡
Especially in the smaller inner canals with little or no through draft.
On windy days not so bad, or after heavy rain but still noticeable.
Canale Grande is usually OK.

It's not so bad Neville, just vastly overcrowded in summer.
Those ships operate around the islands and not in the inner canals, as do most of the Riva-esque Water Taxis, with exception of the Canal Grande.

The Arsenal was built on the site of shipyard founded in 1104!! Most of it is now Museum, but on the last satellite pics I saw there was a naval auxiliary ship (oiler / freighter) in the Arsenal harbour on the north east of the main island.
Oh, and did I mention the millions of pigeons who'll nick yer ice cream or cheese roll right out of yer hand?😲 Not to mention what they leave behind.😡
For what you imagine you need to take a ferry across to the Lido di Jesolo. Lovely sandy beach👍😉

You just lost your bet Martin😁
There sure are, seen 'em first hand.
Tugs to assist the cruise ships, tanker barges, plus a tanker terminal near the entrance to the lagoon, and Patrol Boats from the italian Navy and Guardia Finanzia. There has always been a Marine Arsenal and Academy there.
Cheers, Doug 😎
