Mast building the next adventure

I bought a DF65 “A” Rig Assembly and sails, but it must be assembled. Another new adventure!

I bought a DF65 RTR complete kit which had to be assembled. The rig was not that difficult, just fiddly, in fact too fiddly for my arthritic fingers. So, how did you guess, Alice put it together without much trouble, she's the technical part of the family, she just followed the instructions and it worked out fine. So, don't worry, you'll manage.

Painting the hull

Latest news on the sailboat project...the deck did not come out as desired after the pen ink bled when clearcoat was applied. I used it to highlight the grooves between the planks. The first time this happened I was able to sand it off, but when fibreglass was added, it all happened again. So, I painted the deck grey, with blue trim, and a white hull. Should look just fine in the water.

Ready to go

Added ballast inside, and a 5” lead bar to the keel. Servo to control main sail is installed with all systems working. Added a tight sealed center hatch, not exactly what I had in mind, but keeping water out is the #1 priority.

Now if the ice leaves the lake and local ponds, it will be launch time.

Made some changes

I made some changes to the center section of the sailboat, keeping in mind how best to seal out water. Sailboats by their very nature can catch a sudden breeze and quickly heel over. Tape is used to seal the seams and I wanted a better design to achieve this.

The control arm was also altered giving better results; the four AA battery pack sits nicely beside the Servo, and the receiver on top. Not electrical interference has been detected with this arrangement. Removable items are secured with velcro to keep them in place when sailing.

    Hi Nerys,

Funny you should mention the Soling, my Father has one currently. He bought it about 10 years ago as a project and did her up.
She's a bit different, because this one has been converted from an open boat, to have a cabin roof added (was like that when my Dad bought it). She sails really well and I think my Dad likes it because it reminds him of his old Swallow.

Great to hear that you used to sail on a Dragon and that you rescued one too. There were more Swallows herein Pembrokeshire than there were Dragons.

Hi Will, Your father's Soling looks really nice, that cabin top is, in my opinion, an improvement, particularly if he isn't engaged in serious class racing.

    Cheers, Nerys
