Russian KC100D waterjet work boat project

I managed to fit the 4 'strobe' lights by gluing the LEDs to the inside of the shrouds, gluing the shrouds back to back and soldering each as a unit by crossing the LED legs over each other, and fitting them in through square holes in the top of the boxes/light boards. The wires exit through the inside faces and down through the back of the wheelhouse.

Not perfect, but I think they look ok. May be able to up the voltage slightly to make them brighter. I still have to wire all the lights (mast, dash nav, cabin and strobes) properly and mount the flasher somewhere. Not a lot more to do after that, apart for some dry stacks and a few odds and ends.

Almost finished the wiring now, and thought I'd make sure everything was still working. Turned the power up to 3v for the 'strobes' and they are a lot better now. Added the cabin lights as well yesterday (need yellowing a bit). Spot's wired but not hooked up yet, I still have to make a removable tray to hold the V-regs and strobe device, then everything can be powered properly ready to go.

Another quick vid showing the strobe lights working all round.

This mess is the completed strobe, nav light, dash light and spotlight power center. There are different voltages for the strobes and nav lights, and manual switches for turning them all off for daytime running. The servo/microswitch on the bottom of the tray, stops and starts the 360deg strobe servo (via TX) by interrupting the power lead to the servo. Almost ready to go now, but I have to get over the Chinflu first, (not nice) A tricky part was getting the board in when done, only just fits with all the wiring which had to have extra length left to be able to juggle it in.

Hi Trev, I could write a novel on the problems my ex has caused,- only try and keep on civil terms for my sons' sake. Not alone in that I'm sure. I was doing great till last week, taking vitamins C, D and zinc etc, wearing a mask in shops (I'd be almost the only one in a big supermarket full of people (no mask restrictions now, - up to the business)- mostly Chinese who keep the masks up.

Took a risk a couple of weeks ago, and went to the big end of year music festival at the beach (goes all day till 9pm when they have a big fireworks display to finish up with) Probably 10,000 people there, not a mask in sight, and I came home with nothing, ex comes round and that was that☹️. She's going to have to have a health clearance before she comes here again and risks my health.!

One last thing (unless I think of something else 😁) was to make the life preserver holders and preservers. I made them the same as the originals and had fun bending the wire (1.5mm soft wire) so the legs fitted the rings. marked the positions out drilled the holes and cyano'd the holders in place. Painted them (and first side of the rings with Reeves acrylic artists paint)

Once this is finished, and the lurgy has gone, it 'should' be time for a run.

    Hi Martin,

all models are good in their own way and in the eye of the builder (which counts the most) and you're braver than me, taking on all that string😁 Hope we get to see them sometime soon.

    Hi JB,

I could post a few photos of the ships that I had recently finished.
I will have a quick look and see if I can find them.

    Martin.

Think I've done enough now, just fitted the life rings, windshield wiper and radar/GPS (not sure which it is), so it's about time for sea trials, (once the Chinflu goes away,- taking its' time☹️) and there is a good day for it.

Not an exact copy, a bit shorter and has added draught for rougher (tropical) seas in NZ😁

Specs: 2214 built from I963 by the Kostroma ship yard

Hi Trev congrats on the promotion, I use this app https://russian.typeit.org/ quite handy when you get the hang of it. Hover over the letters to see the differences in English, type what you want and copy and paste to Google translate

eg : Tugs name translates to trout (see pics for process) you can do it on a smart phone with a translation app which is easier. Fun to learn. You can pick any language on the right a well.

Finally chucked it in the pond for it's first proper run last evening. Too windy (even though it didn't look it in the vid, but about 10mph,- funnels down the small valley) Had to wait an hour for it to die down to this level. Boat went ok, everything worked (even the leaks😁) nothing overheated, just got blown round most of the time (almost flat bottom and tall cabin) Reasonably happy with it at this stage, although no wind would have been more enjoyable (plus being able to breathe 100% would have been nice,- Chinflu still going)

Strobes worked well and were surprisingly visible at a decent distance (would be great at night, - this vid was 9pm, not dark enough.) Fwd steering could be better in wind, but you can't have everything when it's been a giant experiment😁. I'll try to mod the rudders a bit more for next time. I added a 3s to power the 12v ESC and Motor fans as well.

Hi Ed, not out at sea, but I was on Norfolk Island in 1976 when a big cyclone went past 100 miles away. The wind was so strong, you couldn't open your car door with the car facing into the wind without shouldering your way out. There were 4 of us in my fiat 127 which was being blown up a slightly sloping road by the wind.

Got out of the car by a fallen Norfolk pine, and had to drag myself along the tree to avoid being blown away. Lots of fun. On the other side of the Island, boulders the size of Minis were being bowled up and down the jetty road from off the sea floor.

When I was 4yrs old, I was on a NZ passenger cargo ship (Rangitane) (before RORO Cook Strait ferries) from Picton to Wellington, in a storm similar to the one in which the Cook Strait ferry Wahine sunk. The ship was rolling that much, the water was coming out of the toilets, and it was impossible to stand up. That was exciting (for a kid)

If you meant with the model, not yet 😁

Another vid similar to the first. Was 1 of 2 but quite long so I chopped it down a bit.

Full speed (for Gary) at 2:50. It's restricted to 80% throttle so more for scale.

Skipper had been on the Vodka as well😁

Managed to get some decent vids on a local estuary last night- 9pm (they were decent till YT made them a bit blurry with their new HD loading thingy,- haven't seen it before) There are 3 vids but I'll just post 1 per day as the new YT setup seems to take twice as long to upload now (about an hour!)

Hi Graham, I was glad it worked out ok, although I have a large box of pipe bits and valve boxes to find a home for now😁. Your module works very well and makes driving the boat easy. I really appreciated your input on the complicated drive system operation to make this boat work how it should.

Hi Martin, the vid quality is something to do with the std to HD uploading system on YT. You can do a quicker upload if you want std definition or wait anything up to an hour for it to upload in HD ( these vids are 2.7K,- 2700x1520 30fps) I've tried them in 4K but they take forever to upload. Perhaps they are having problems coping with all the 4k vids now space wise?

Doing vids in dull weather or low light turns out rough as well. A sunny day is no problem though. it was quite dark for this vid. Vids must lose a bit of clarity going from camera to computer to YT to the site as well. Depends a lot on the camera as well.

Second video on the estuary, bit darker by this stage. I think it definitely needs a small barge. I've got plenty of poly left. I also need a carrier as I keep damaging the handrails trying to carry it any distance.

    Hi JB,

    What scale is she?

I could scale up some figures for you and 3D print them and send them to you? 👍

    Cheers,

    Ed-

Last vid on the estuary, on the tidal pond above the bridge. Great area for models at high tide, just need a good wash in the tank when you get home, (plenty of oil/grease in the shafts etc)

Thanks Phil, same to you. keep making your on water vids, I think you've mastered them.👍 They are a great record for those who can't manage a camera and sail simultaneously..
