When I used the ferries over the river Mersey the landing stages were cantilevered and the gaps covered with sliding plates. Water moves so you do need to allow your floating stages to rise and fall. I agree with pressonregardless and see you are adopting a similar system. Make sure the gap for the joints allows for the maximum wave size movement and use a hinged plate to cover the gap. There will be quite some pressure on the mountings so I suggest you do a trial with one to see if it needs to be made stronger. If I remember correctly the floating pontoons were attached to shore with heavy anchor chains.
Looking forward to see your finished product

Got it. So something like this? Looks like that could certainly work. Fast assembly too. I like it! 👍

Hi Fodigo,

I used to use side plates with holes on the fingers and angle iron with holes on the mains. They were then connected with rods thru the holes. Have you considered PVC for the dock material?
1" thick material is available at Lumber yards. It can be milled to size. The other option would be to coat the lumber with penetrating epoxy.

No- the docks need to be transported to and from the lakes. (Bummer). In dock building I have made 3. I’ve used various types of ways to connect the dock pieces to make it as simple as possible (hook and pin- but if someone throws a wake close they can come off) to screw pins (that work great but take time to assemble/disassemble). The new idea will take a bit of manufacturing and installing but quite simply, drop pins is the best way to explain it. Material has been the second part of the undertaking. Originally, the pictures of the docks are wood with styrofoam under to float it and each fiberglass wrapped. But it’s costly. As is wood nowadays. And wood warps after time.

I shall be following your progress, as a former Marina Manager, dock design and building was an important aspect of my job. Although your Marina is in miniature there are similarities. Are you able to leave the docks in all summer?

Boat dock: This was phase 2 - to house just the rescue boats. It was an addition to the original dock. In the future, there will be phase 3 that will house common boats. Phase 4 will house war ships.

Trev- check this out- we are currently designing another marina (about 150% bigger than this one, that will attach to the old section) I think it will hold 17+5+5. It’s due for operation 2024. Will accommodate larger long war ships to smaller boats.
Should be fun. Experimenting with modular construction and trying new designs on attaching the dock pieces.hopefully it will be something like never tried.

Nice coastguard models. What scale are they?

We have meets usually end of the month- however, due to new homeless encampment- have diverted from Rohnert Park to Petaluma (Lucchesi Park) temp. until further notice. All scalers welcome. Some fasties OK but this park has regulations on it. We also visit Spreckels in San Francisco for our specialized events. / no fees- just fun / also have the largest group of Proboat USCGs in the world. With likely the most boat rescues as well. 😉
