About this boat

Knocked this up in around 6 weeks ('free modelling',-no plans, just looking at a few photos) for my son but he wasn't interested (the dreaded Playstation) so I re assigned it to myself and put a few more bits on it. The whole boat is balsa and just enamel painted so it is quite light. Only single shaft and runs well, but thinking of making it a twin set-up with better motors and shafts. mostly gets used as a camera boat as it is very stable. (Motor: 380) (ESC: China) (5/10)

Hi Red, I had the same problems with the ST I'm building at the moment. I used the plan and elevation sketches and bulkhead/frame shapes and positions from the 1975 Model Boats articles on RAF rescue boats, but found that the chine up-sweep forward was wrong and had to be brought down.
I also had to fit an extra bulkhead between 2 and 3 (and move 2 forward) to bring the hull curve out to the correct line. Could have done with a half frame between 4 and the transom to support the stringers (found I had to prop them to hold the shape till f/glass had set) I've left them in to run hoses and wires behind so they turned out to be handy.
There are so many variations of Miamis that you have to just pick the one you like best and go for it. The one I built (very roughly) was modeled off the dwg and pic compared to the SA one which has totally different coamings (there are also a number of RAF boats similar to the SA one). I forgot to add the nice little 'barrel back'stern on mine which I was intending to.
The RNZAF 64ft 100 series HSL I built from the same mag dwgs had similar problems, (not to mention dozens of RNZAF mods while in service) so I just blended most of them into one boat. There is no one left to argue, so who will know if something is not 100% accurate, (applies to most wartime modelling subjects)

Have also been trying to design a Miami as a EezeBilt 50+ for Dodgys website - been in process a good few years now. Got the hull shape correct to the 70's drawings (in which the station outlines don't agree with the GA which does not help). Also needed to move some and insert more frames to suit the build. The rear sub deck has a funny shape but after much head scratching and looking at other models of the Miami decided to eliminate the curves. Got that far but the trouble is work keeps interfering and it takes a good while to get back into it. Gets a bit hard at 74 but one has to live. Perhaps the next design will be quicker. Would be a great idea if we added to Dodgys collection - can think of a few others suitable like an old Scottish inshore fishing boat , a US shrimp trawler and perhaps a Maine Lobster boat.

    Very nice camera boat.
As long as it keeps up with what you want to film, then there is no reason to change a thing.
    Good work.

Thought of fitting it with twin shafts but I think I'd make a more accurate one from a plan perhaps before doing that. Think I mentioned that the RNZAF had a few of these at their base in Fiji during the war and back here for a short while after. Might have been US lend lease I think.

Also built one by eye for my son in the 80's using a much modified GF cabin cruiser hull - same kind of response - so I have it now - but badly damaged in a move .
He wanted a big gun - so made the Israeli version - read that they mounted twin Oerlikons at the blunt end.
Lucky in the sense that a friend had two of them 1 to 1 scale for reference - now fitted with diesels of course.
The article on the Miami in 70's MB was useful to get the hull looking much the same. Similar power unit to yours - a 400 Mabuchi direct to a 30mm P two blade prop . Not bad on 7.2v Nicads but only about 10minute run time.
