This model is from the Sterling (USA) model kit of the same name. It was one of my first models built in the early 1970's. I had planned it to be R/C by adding some keel weights and fiber glassed the hull as the kit hull material was 1/8 inch balsa sheet sections on frame. The hull is quite solid, sealed, and has a smooth finish. Basically everything is built to the kits instructions with a number of additional details.
These 2023 photos reflect a number of years (50+) it has been sitting on my shelf above my Civil War desk (my build) so pardon the dust.
Great build Lew! Your Emma is beautiful!!!
And ah, what memories it brings!
I too built her way back in around 1980, but almost lost my mind trying to work with the 1/8" balsa sheets that came with the kit. Same with the Lumba-Lumba! So I plank-on-framed it with basswood strips. She looked so good (to me at least) that I just clear spar varnished it. I free sailed her a few times, but never got the ballast just right although in the right wind she did look great! Displayed her ever after, but sadly lost her in a house fire in 2010. A difficult and pricey kit to find these days and quite large. The printed deck was a plus, especially at a time in my life when I was still carrying golf bags and blew all my spare change on the basswood for the hull which aggravated the hell out of my girlfriend at the time. 😂
I am so happy you have built and preserved Emma so beautifully!!!!
