Recreation of a boat built when I was 14/15 55 years ago,used a clockwork gramophone motor with the rudder couples to an eccentric on the spring box to make it sail in a lazy "S".the original lifted in the water but did not plane properly so seeing if 55 years later I have learned anything!.
That's different, are you going to still use the clockwork motor. How does the rudder work. I see it has a wire from it to inside the boat. Also what is the nipple on the side sponson for?
yes still clockwork,The best improvements have been made by lightening the motor, drilling holes in everything and replacing a side plate with one made of alloy.It is just a nut on the sponson, they are adjustable for incidence.It will now plane on the sponsons "unsticking" the hull.The original was built when I was 13/14,the motor came from the family gramophone when my dad converted it to autochanger/amplifier,the wood came from the woodshed but I was short of plywood and realised the back of my wardrobe was plywood and was hidden behind clothes so when my parents were out I cut the bits I needed from it!,my mates christened it "the wardrobe".Performance is down to propeller choice and is a compromise between speed and runtime.I took it to a boating pond in a nearby town when my wife needed to visit it and a council "jobsworth" told me I was not allowed to sail it,"only yachts and electric boats on here sir"no amount of reasoning would make him change his mind and he escorted me out of the park!.

Guess most of you have heard of the Khetanna, Jabba The Hut's sail barge from Star Wars. I looked around on the net and to my big surprise, the search engines did not spit out radio controlled versions of this model. Which made me think, and then decide to built my own.
It is scratch build, based on a "scudder" hull, a design by Glenn G. I printed a few pictures of Khetanna from the net and used those for guidance in the process.
The superstructure is a combination of balsa and ply wood. in the Star Wars tradition, the boat is propelled by a jet propelled engine. To finish it off, a Lego version of Jabba was added for extra detail.
It was a fun and fast project to built, maybe a dozen or so evenings.
(scratch) building is my passion and only sail the boats with my son about once a month. We've got a pond near Newcastle (AUS) harbour which is pretty good (providing there's no weed in it) but the disadvantage of this pond is salt water, meaning a proper rinse of the models is needed after each sailing session. Recently we have moved our sailing sessions as well to the liberty pond in town. The model captures the audience, the vast majority recognize the Khetanna immediately.

I bought the hull from a friend who moulds them then built it from pictures I had taken of the actual boat in Blyth harbour it runs on a Graupner 700bb motor 12v battery Robbe Fixed Kort Nozzle with Rudder & 60 mm Propeller lights on a separate 6v battery & figures from Adrian Clutterbuck

Completed April 1967, at Richard bunston Hessle for the Lawson
Batey Tug Co. Ltd., at a cost of £106,500. Then chartered to the Tyne & Wear Tug Co. Ltd., working on the Tyne for harbour towage. Also visiting other UK and European ports during many coastal tows. After a long and eventful service on the Tyne, sold in 1996 to BaltagI Pilots in Bahrain and renamed 'BaltagI 6' there it remains in service today. M.T. Ironsider Completed September 1967, a sister ship to the Northsider, also chartered to the Tyne Wear Tug Co. Ltd., until 1992. Then sold to Proodos Maritime Co., Piraeus and renamed 'MegaloharI 12' still in service today.
Both tugs are similar to Alexandra Towings Tug, 'Sauria' which, was based at Felixstowe, UK. .
Building from plan going to run on a Johnson 600 powered by a 3 cell lipo with a 10" shaft & 42mm propeller it will be going to a pal in Scotland when it is finished
Aquired as response to grandsons'Can't we have one like that' request on seeing other club members ' Hooligan boat'.
Cheap second hand commercial speed boat steered by shutting down port or starboard motors and only on/off on pretend transmitter.
Now modified with proper ESC, 2.4 radio with servo operated rudder and upgraded to take 8.4v NiCad.

Looks like a nice mod on her. I have one but wasn't happy with it as it didn't have a very good radio range. But did go quite well in the radio range she had. That should be a lot better now you have done this to her. I gave my brother one that I got from a boot fair that cost me a £5er. He ripped out the insides and has fitted it with a small brushless motor and 2.4gh radio and it is not so much a hooligan but more of a total maniac. But good fun.
Started 1 Oct 2014. Designed by Bennett to take an action man figure. I decided to use a drawing manikin. First try was without manikin and a great success. Still working on it to get Manakin rowing properly. 8Th feb tested and a sucsess but does not like strong wind.
Designed by Vic Smeed in 1964 for the Magazine, Model Maker. Plan No. MM812. Found plans for free on internet and decided to build it as I did not have a vintage motor boat in my collection. Did not like the cabin so redesigned it. Powered by a Johnson 600 motor,2 * 7.2v 3300 mAh battery, 20 amp Mtroniks Viper Marine Controller and a 45mm dia course 2 bladed propeller. Goes really well.
Fitted trim tabs which finished the boats performance. Tested in rough weather and got 20 mins running on a fully charged battery.
