Naulantia hull converted to Bermuda rigged schooner

First time in the water and under power. to get the correct trim (ect) I built a test tank from ply and lined it with polythene. To stat with There were two 12V lead acid batteries and the weight of the two motors, she just simply sat there, even the props were above water. After approx 30lbs more weight the correct water line was reached, the white line on the hull follows the sheer line of the main deck and isn't the true water line. So with the two batteries hooked up in parallel, the 12V Proboat Speed controller and the two Duma 12V motors as can be seen quite a good performance.

Completely scratch built using balsa wood and Mahogany strips for the decks and bridge and the free plan by James Pottinger issued in Model Boat Magazine November 1996. The plans were well drawn at a scale of 1:93 how ever I doubled the size by just transfering each measurement directly onto the wood and a few card patterns were made when panneling the hull.

Built from a plan in 'Model Boats' in the 80's with a balsa hull and ply decking. Powered by a single cylinder 'Unit Steam Engine' from the same era, and a meths fired boiler. Only recently has radio control been added.

This model took me 3 years. Copper plated the hull panel by panel. Even found a crew for her, then added an RC and took her to the lake.
She sailed well, but my enthusiasm to leave the gun ports open cost me dear. The water got in the hull and knocked out the RC, leaving her listing and drifting some way from shore.
Salvation came in the shape of a 10 year son of a friend, who strip to his underwear and swam out to rescue her!
Now she sits retired in a glass case.

I bought the hull from a friend who moulds them then built it from pictures I had taken of the actual boat in Blyth harbour it runs on a Graupner 700bb motor 12v battery Robbe Fixed Kort Nozzle with Rudder & 60 mm Propeller lights on a separate 6v battery & figures from Adrian Clutterbuck

I built this Range Safty Launch two years ago and I am now changing the hull paintwork to also include a water line. I never got around to doing this for some reason.

I purchased the plans for this model after my late father passed away, he too was building this model but failed to finish it before he died. My father was an Ex RAF Patrol boat pilot, hence the design was appropriate. The plans (Two sheets) are really well presented and easy to use. Each of the sheets provide ample detail to construct the basic model and if you are an experienced builder then these should suffice. However, a little research may be required to put the final touches together for the completed model (If you are a perfectionist like me). These plans are suitable for a novice as a first time project. This being my first attempt at a scale model. The boat once completed sails really well. I fitted mine out with electric motors, speed controller etc and when on the water a few heads turned! Fantastic plans GO FOR IT! Roy McCluskey
