Return visit to - Hayling Island Model Boat Club
On a visit to Hayling Island last year, I met and sailed members of the Hayling Island Model Boat Club at their local venue at Mill Rythe.
May this year provided me the opportunity for a return visit.
Many thanks again to all members for the hospitality shown.
Special thanks to Greg, Rob and Mike (the Swan Whisperer) !.

Filmed a while ago but just re found this short maiden voyage clip of the above.
First test run.All went well.Voyage lasted roughly thirty min and this is one short clip.
Difficult filming on your own.

    “Three hands and two brains!!”
    Three hands would be handy!!😂😂😂
Two brains would be very dangerous in my case as I struggle with the one I have.

Yes the smokers do make a funny noise on start up,but are great for these size models.
I know they are 8ml but I do pop in 10 without any problems.
If I let the wife video for me the phone would end up in the canal.😂😂
    Take care chaps 👍

Adrian had cut the brushless motor power to 45% as it was his first test run. He intends to redistribute the weight and increase the power and see how it goes on the next test. I will try and be present and video to see how he fares.

Changed motor in St. Pierre Dory
I like the new motor, it has a higher voltage rating than the Graupner 400 which is 6 volts.

Hi good idea, have you been out on the water yet?

I have several 12 -18 volt motors the size of a 550 and run them on 6 -7.2 volts and they will turn over a big prop 45 - 50 mm.

This looks good on a cargo ship where you can almost watch the prop turn over. They do not get hot and have a low current drain. Bonus is they are often cheap! Also I can use slightly cheaper NiMh batteries of about 3300mAhs.

I have a few Pittman motors originally scrounged out of computer tape decks 40 years ago. They are almost silent and work really well.

I always check for hot batteries or motors as I do not want current diverted from the motor to heating up the drive train.

Following a friend I have also found a cheap and effective and silent U/J. It is plastic flexible tubing about 3/8ths inch diameter in less than 2 inch lengths.

You can use it in place of the Huco U/J, keeping the brass inserts on which it is a tight fit. Or if you have a threaded shaft a largish pair of nuts locked together with the tubing forced over them.

They need to be in a straight line and a few fast forward and reverses settles the tubing into position. The drive is silent and efficient and good for up to 20 watts or so.
    regards
    Roy

I would agree with others, viz. use a smaller prop. When a motor gets hot it normally indicates too high a resistance from the prop, so try a couple of smaller sizes and monitor its performance.
    Good luck😉

St.Pierre Plans
Others may wish to consider building a dory too. I got the plans for mine from John Gardner’s book “ The Dory Book”, it’s available from The Wooden Boats store.

Launch of St.Pierre Dory
Today, as the temperature rose to nearly 90F/31C the St.Pierre Dory was launched at Balsam Lake Provincial Park. Water was pleasantly calm. My grandson handled the controls while myself and Grandma took pictures to document the event.

Very pleased with how well it performed. It is very sea worthy even riding the swells left by passing full-size runabouts.

The only issue was the motor was extremely hot to the touch. This could be caused from the wrong prop.

Ronald, the prop is actually 1-3/4" ... in the photo you hav indexed the left blade to the end of your ruler, not the "0" point on the ruler. My 33" PT109 calls for a single 1" plastic prop to reach scale speed. I think you need a smaller diameter & much less pitch to alleviate your motor heating issue. Heatsinking, & watercooling or a fan will not fix your issue.

She certainly handles well in the water. That would be a nice one to enjoy cruising around with. From the video it looks like the velocity is more of a speed boat rather than a dory.
    Nice job!

Imai1/40 "Half Moon"
This is my very first wood model. I started to build her long time ago but when I got to the rigging part, I came to a screeching halt do to the lack of rigging knowledge.
After several years of being built without rigging, our cleaning lady knocked it off the base to the floor. It was a total disaster, 3 years after that, I decided to refurbished it and do the rigging with the help of this book.

Great Day in Hamilton,Ontario, Canada
My wife and I went to the Confederation Modellers Annual Event yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Maybe Garth, Rick, or others will provide comments as to details and such as we were only visitors though I did show my latest built, the St.Pierre Dory.

Push Tug Rescue Boat
This is nuts but I’m already designing what my scratch built rescue boat will look like.
I’m hand drawing all of the lines on tracing paper in case that I need to change something but in the next few days I will clean it and finish it so you guys could see it.
After complete I will build a separate contraction somehow looking like this one that could be assembled whenever is needed and taken off to carry away.

If you guys don’t mind, I would like to your version of your rescue boats.

The Cat Boat Scale 3/4”= 1’.
This is my Catboat (alternate spelling: cat boat).
I made this for my son to have on his house.
When I bought this old model from EBay for little money but took me lots of hours to turn it the way it looks.
Is a sailboat with a single sail on a single mast set well forward in the bow of a very beamy and (usually) shallow draft hull. Typically they are gaff rigged, though Bermuda rig is also used. Most are fitted with a centreboard, although some have a keel.
The hull can be 12 to 40 feet long with a beam half as wide as the hull length at the waterline.
The type is mainly found on that part of the Eastern seaboard of the USA from New Jersey to Massachusetts.
