Hi Nerys
Please remember that Wikipedia is built around peoples input and they sometimes don't detail everything

Thanks to all.
I'm a bit worried at the moment about being a Leading Seaman. Can I be a Following Seaman for a bit until I get the hang of it?
Covid 19 is running rampant in my extended family at the moment. For some strange reason I had it or something like it in February this year. therefore pre testing. No one else did. I still cannot smell anything and everything tastes bland. Still suffering from the Long Covid. It definitely exists. So please take care and stay safe to all.

I've heard this explanation of snotty too and whilst I cannot see any reason to doubt it's authenticity, I've heard the cuff version far more often. Even Wikipedia gives it. Not that that is of much consequence.

Cheers, Nerys

There is another explanation given to us Royal Hospital School Holbrook ( Royal Naval School Ex Greenwich) where I went to High School was that the term snotty was applied due to Midshipmen coming from the upper class. All the eldest Sons in the Headland family went to Midshipman School since 1652!

Maybe not Nerys,
But I do - now😉
"Snotty
In Royal Navy slang, a midshipman is sometimes referred to as a "snotty".
Two popular stories give origins for the term: the first claims that it arose from a shortage of handkerchiefs among midshipmen, who would consequently use their sleeves to wipe their noses. Prince William, later William IV, is sometimes cited as a notorious example of this practice among midshipmen.
The other story claims that the three buttons formerly sewn onto midshipmen's jacket cuffs were placed there to prevent them from wiping their noses on their sleeves."

Full info on Midshipmen here - just found it😁

A Killick is lower deck slang for a Leading Seaman, because the proper meaning is a small anchor. Leading Seaman badge is an anchor.
It is also a large stone used by small craft as an anchor (days gone by)
